Rhythm Guitar - Who Was The Master?

Being always partial to keyboardists, I have to say my knowledge concerning other musicians is quite narrow(although I'm trying to expand it recently).

Aside from Nile Rogers & Roger Troutman (who I think was THEE best rhythm guitar player that ever lived). Who are your fave rhythm guitar players?

Great list, Tim!

What do you think of Jimmy Nolen & T-Bone Walker though? I think they added their fuel to the fire.

Timmy's list is great, and for music I'll generally describe as "popular music," I'll take Steve Cropper any day of the week.

Prince is my personal fave.

I also really like MJ's two session guitarists, David Williams and Paul Jackson Jr.

I'd like to ask since we're in the subject, whats the difference between rhythm playing and chicken grease playing?

And for those who're familiar with the extended version of Prince' "Hello", what style do you call the guitar playing in the beginning of the song?

Roger Troutman has alway been a fave of mine too.

And Paul "Bumbelbee" Jackson, Jr. has been hired for his chops on an expanded list of recordingsessions :

His turn starts around 1:55, after Louis Johnson broke his snare from plucking lol.

JImi Hendrix is usually overlooked as a rhythm player, but he was in a trio and had to carry the rhythm parts as well as the lead, often blending them together seamlessly.

Little Wing is the classic example of this technique, ubiquitous nowadays to the point of cliche
