Aretha - Appreciation Thread

This album is pretty good. Piced it up for .50 @ Half Prince Books in St. Paul Minntesoter.

I cannot for the life of me stop playing Every Girl Wants My Guy and When You Love Me Like That.

Kitty gurwl..

Yeah, whats happnin?

You know

Girls trying to get a hold of ma man

But I got him on a blackout

(We want your guy!)

who else is on the phone?

you got some kinda party line

Well let me tell you ALL something!

dancing jig excited

other albums I picked up (.50) were:

[img:$uid]http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drn100/n146/n14651cjij9.jpg[/img:$uid]

Do Me is my sawng! The others are obvious classics too though...but I like Teddy being funky better than anything.

Sue Ann - Blue Velvet

You're So Precious & Ooh Ooh Oh Oh are my jams dancing jig

I wanted to extend this to a Aretha Appreciation thread because I have been spying on her back catelouge and I noticed an "experiemental" album called "Hey Now Hey" with some amazing vocals I heard on youtube. Especially Mister Spain. I think I am starting to really dig her. Might have to go and pick up some more vinyl on Aretha!

WYLMLT is solid as a rock indeed. Cool ad-libs from Luther here and there, great orchestration-arrangements and Marcus Miller's bass is king

more snippets ...

Both albums which Luther produced are pretty solid. Some faves of mine on her previous "Jump To It" are the sphereful "(It's Just) Your Love",

"If She Don't Want Your Lovin" with a great vocal-harmony intro, and an infectious version of "It's Your Thing". The rhythm-section on there

with Marcus Miller's slapbass sound rediculously tight.

ARETHA FRANKLIN - Love me... your love

(It's Just) Your Love (20...nklin: MP3

Those Lutha produced albums are the ONLY 80s albums I like from Aretha, the decade in general hasn't been good to her musically. Get It Right was the album where all the drama between her & Big Lutha started, great album though.

Did that Sue Ann album cost you a bucket of blood, btw? lol Coz' I've been trying to find it,,and godness knows I've been trying to find her debut album(where Prince produced a song for her).

I like the song "Every Girl Wants My Guy",with the hilarious spoken interlude. She's talking to one of her girlfriends and then we hear a chorus of girls confessing "We want your guy!" lol

The Queen of Soul and drama LOL. One would ask, 'who hasn't she had drama with'?

Latest installment, a bathtub in Boston perhaps sad, but that's Aretha

On the GET IT RIGHT album, there were some choice cuts Oh my at 'Toss and turn it inside out, play with it and get it right'.

In her defence though, Lutha was feeling his oats a lil' too much after the success of "Jump To It", he thought he was entitled to correct her on how to sing some certain phrases,,,,he should've taken a lesson from her brawl with Curtis Mayfield and let sleeping dogs die.

Identity

I've always liked "Every Girl Wants My Guy" which is underpinned by a typically great Miller bassline.

You don't like her 1985 album 'Who's Zoomin Who'? I think it's pretty good, although it's very "pop" sounding lol The standout tracks are "Another Night" and "Until You Say You Love Me".

I could take it or leave it, honestly.

It ain't bad, the attempt at trying to capture the younger audience seemed extremely pronounced & calculated though. At least, the Luther-produced albums were hip, funky & spontaneous(the title songs of both of those albums are her funkiest songs ever IMO,,,,esp the extended mixes).

Curtis being a perfectionist, tried to tell Aretha how to sing in the "Sparkle" album, Aretha characteristically raised holly hell but unlike Luther, I don't know if Curtis retaliated, he didn't seem like the type who likes to dwell on the drama.

I agree, although I do like some of hewr stuff from 80-82 as well. But the Luther stuff is the best. I just got Jump To It on CD a few weeks ago. I already had Get It Right. Luther really knew eaxactly what he was doing when he produced female artists. His work with Cheryl Lynn is awesome too, my favorite stuff by her.

Speaking of Aretha, anyone ever hear I'm Your Speed?? eek clapping

I doubt it. Curtis was a mellow kind of brother. Luther was as big of a diva (least in his own mind) as Aretha so I'm not shocked they went toe to toe.

Imagine if Aretha didn't have as many phobias as she does. She is already world-wide acclaimed, but she hasn't left the continental USA since 1983. The amounts of offers from Japan, China, Africa, Europe and Australia she has turned down due to her fear of flying.

She is already rich - but her fortune would quadruple with a world tour. Many of the countries I named she has never been to in her 50 year career.

Her recorded output has also slowed immensely since the early 80s. She has only had 3 proper full-bodied stduio albums since THROUGH THE STORM in 1988, and they are WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU SWEAT (1991), A ROSE IS STILL A ROSE (1998) and SO DAMN HAPPY (2003).

Part of it from '92 to '98 was due to the fact that she hated the sound of her own voice as it declined so badly due to chain-smoking Kool cigarettes and lifestyle (eating and weight gains).

As big as she is, she could even be bigger, and I don't mean size-wise. She has recently lost around 50 pounds, and that is a welcome sight, as well as for her health. She was the biggest I had ever seen her on the PBS shows that were shown recently and will continue to September She was at the piano hosting a show called ARETHA FRANKLIN'S SOUL REWIND, with hits from the 70s being the main menu item. She wore a moo-moo type dress and the look was not very flattering.

Her recorded legacy is incredible, but us true fans can only wish she could deliver a knockout soul album one more time. From recent interviews she seems more interested in doing an arias album. The 4 year delayed and often bandied about ARETHA: A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE, seems never destined to see the light of day. Someone mentioned "I'm Your Speed" from her 1978 ALMIGHTY FIRE album, and an audio was posted via YouTube, this was Aretha Franklin when she sang the hell out of songs. The entire album is full of soul, but unfortunately it is out of print and was never released on cd, as is the case with 4 of her other albums (all of which she owns the masters to).

Last time she was overseas was probably in 1980 or something like that. Why didn't anyone encourage ole girl? I'm sure she deserves some exposure over there.

Its gonna burn a hole in your pocket, but its def worth it. I love the balance between her Columbia & Atlantic years(she used to be more versatile than what folks give her credit for), I'm sure you won't get a boring moment when you listen to them thoroughly.

This is from the Atlantic period

This is from the Columbia period

[img:$uid]http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/a/aretha-franklin/album-queen-in-waiting-columbia-years-1960-1965.jpg[/img:$uid]

And this compiles the outtakes/demos/alt song of Atlantic(which I highly recommend along those two)
