LISA LISA & CULT JAM......

I aint gonna lie...I loved me some LL&CJ back in the 80's...their songs were catchy...videos were fun and Lisa had the biggest-AquaNet-Latina-mullett I've ever seen...

She was the Latin answer to Teena Marie and they were pioneers to the whole pop-meets-hip hop movement of the mid-80's...just listen to "I Wonder If I Take You Home"...or "Can You Feel The Beat"...

Call em bubblegum (especially circa the 1987 SPANISH FLY/"Head To Toe" era) but in my 'hood they were considered cutting edge during their early days...

Just listen to that first album LISA LISA & CULT JAM WITH FULL FORCE...

they even broke it down again in '92 with 'Let The Beat Hit'em"

oh...and I dont know a single Latino/a who did not ironically lovingly slow dance to 'All Cried Out' back in '86...

any other Lisa Lisa testimonials??? or haters??? all is welcome...to each their own!

I was heartbroken th e summer of All Cried Out and I cried like a bitch one afternoon with that song playin tearin my shit up. Damn that jam hurts so friggin GOOD! The way Bo-Legged Lou sings " is it to late for me..to find my way home..how could I be so wrong?" "Leaving me all aloneee"

apology not accepted add me to the broken hearts you coll-ec-ted..syllable to syllable onomatopea(sp?) style not missing a beat

and Lisa Lisa all in White sangin, bangin the thickness and realness and heartache.

will you still love me..if I take you hooome.

That begginning though of Take You Home " uh uh uh.."

worship

Hee Hee...I almost mentioned that...but I was sure someone else would! LOL...yup...Lisa's TIG-OL-BITTIES needed their own area code! I remember 1988 AMA's when LL was dancing her azz off to 'Head To Toe' and thinking....'She's gonna get a black eye!!!!!'

That was their best jam right there, and it barely got any airplay in my neck of the woods. I need to look for that song now.

"Lost In Emotion" is a very Supremes-type song.

So was "Head To Toe" (the '14 karat love you are my jewel of the Nile' line) ...the hook line was very similar to Supremes "Back In My Arms Again"...if I remember correctly..Diana Ross made some kind of hoopla about Lisa Lisa ripping off the Supremes...

I dont care...I still loved it...

Head to Toe and Lost in Emotion were my jams summer of 1987. I just rememeber spending many days on my cousins' boat and blasting those songs as an eleven year old. Very fond memories of those days.

Just recently I realized that Lisa Lisa and Paula Abdul could very easily be sisters. Think about it.

In the summer of '87,the 'Spanish Fly' album was one of my favorites. It contained their best work..."Everything Will B-Fine",the Motown-styled hits "Head To Toe" and the charming "Lost In Emotion",the Prince-like,percussion-heavy "I Promise You"...this album was da shit back in the day!!

I'm gonna go play it right now smile

Their first album was the best one IMO. It was that Freestyle sound (Latin club music--ppls from NYC and Miami know what I'm talkin bout).

All Cried Out had Prince's Beautiful Ones drippin all over it. Even the video--the lace, etc.

Full Force still makin hits too, writing and producing for some of the boy bands these days.

I have there Hits&first ALbum.Full Force doesn't get enough credit for the things they did as Writers&Producers&the same with Lisa-Lisa IMHO.Lisa-Lisa did J-Lo&Janet before they did with her vibe&whatnot."Little Jackie" Pre-dated Janet's Mellow Guitar type of tracks.I wasn't that crazy about Lisa-Lisa's VOice until "Let the Beat Hit Em'&that was IMHO Her Best Vocal Performance IMHO.Full Force had a Stew of New Jack Swing,Hip-Hop,R&B,Pop,etc.. going on with there Sound&Lisa-Lisa&The Cult Jam fit in real well.Cult Jam use too do alot of Flips on stage when they performed.

Samnatha Fox scored a Hit with them.the Latoya Album dropped in 88&It still sucked.they had a Hit on James Brown with "Static".they went too working with Cheryl "Pepsi" Riley.still rock there Jam "Alice,I Want you for me".a combination of Hip-Hop,R&B,Pop&New Jack Swing elements this was back in 85&they had a strong Minneaplois vibe.but for all there Success Black Radio&Acts turned on them so the Brothers had too Eat&they did two "House Party" Films&got into a deal too work with Backstreet Boys,N-Synch among others.

YUP...after she passed away though...her brother A.B. while finishing what would become the DREAMING OF YOU album..met with Full Force to remix a couple of trax..."Missing My Baby" and "Techno Cumbia" were both remixed by Full Force and surfaced on the second half of DREAMING OF YOU disc...the first half are the English songs she completed before she died...including a collab with David Byrne called "God's Child (Dance With Me)" love that song!

"I Wonder If I Take You Home" is my all time favorite of her music, "Lost in emotion" was second, "All cried out" third, and "Can You Feel The Beat" last...

EVERYONE was feeling her vibe, especially from where I'm at...and she was one of the first, you know what I'm saying?! Mad props to her!

I saw Lisa on tv not long ago and I was surprised to learn that she plays the mom of a teenaged daughter on a cable tv show. Can't remember the name of the show, though. (Think it's one word, prolly the daughters name?)

Anybody?

Found this interesting bit on a site devoted to Freestyle music (www.clubfreestyle.com) on the Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam project:

From "FREESTYLE GREATEST BEATS" Vol. 1-10
Written by Joey Gardner.
http://www.clubfreestyle....estyle.htm

The single that many consider the first true Latin Hip-Hop record was Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's "I Wonder If I Take You Home." The song was originally signed to Personal Records in New York and not released in the U.S. It was licensed to CBS Records in England and became a big club record on import. The response the record received from the Latin Hip-Hop clubs led Columbia Records to pick up the single for U S release where it became an anthem for teen-age girls. The song reached #34 on the Pop charts in August of 1985 and Lisa Lisa became a role model for young Hispanics all over her hometown of New York.
