My thoughts on Lady Gaga's record setting 13 MTV VMA nominations in 2010

The following statement is a copy of the same one that I made on another website's forum earlier tonight -- TVD 8/2010 2:23am CST

Lady Gaga --> A record setting 13 MTV VMA nominations in one year (2010)!

Now just think about it for a moment. Michael, Madonna, Prince, Janet, Mariah, .......oh hell, NO ONE has ever earned 13 nominations at any music award shows!

In the history of the Grammy Awards Show, Michael Jackson & Carlos Santana are tied for winning 11 awards each.

But this isn't the Grammy Awards that we're talking about in the case of Lady Gaga (not yet anyway?). This is the VMA on MTV, a network that normally Madonna is credited for being the queen of. But if Gaga somehow wins all 13 awards, it'll be only a matter of time before the music industry declares her as the one to have Michael's AND Madonna's torches as THE pop music culture standard. And you can best believe that other music award shows producers AND committee members (especially the ones over the Grammy & AMA) will take notice.

Just wait.

I find her music embarrassingly awful, to be honest.

Don't see the appeal at all.

Congrats to Gaga. It's not really that surprising considering she has dominated the radio scene for quite a while. Not that getting a lot of radio airplay guarantees that, but it seems to help on some level. As far as video airplay goes, I don't watch many videos, but obviously, she got a lot of MTV airplay.

there is no overall relevance to MTV at this point. It isnt a shock because no one gets any play anyway, the labels and media can really only focus on one thing at a time, its not like you have a battle of artists all doing different shit, RB music has the same song with a different face, POP music is the same idea with a different Name and now Dance music (or what they call Dance music) is now falling into that same trend, that so many others have. But there is no relevance, the show will be the same old thing, someone will pull a stunt, someone will wear something shocking (though nothing is shocking anymore) some females will have a kiss to shock the world, or maybe this year two guys will do the trendy kiss shit, and none of it at the end of the day is even relevant, its just all planned, nothing original or creative.

Actually, yes. Her fans care. Just as anyone who is a fan of someone would likely care.

I'd rather her receive those 13 nominations than some of these other craptastic artists...

Honey, stop talking and just create the music.

On a serious note, though, it's the VMAs...it's a popularity contest at the end of the day and doesn't have much to do with true talent. Now I think LG has a nice voice whenever she actually sings but her appeal is just a conglomerate of everything and everyone who had appeal back in the day and is not unique or even shocking in any way to me. It's been done before, and it's rather tired, but then again I've seen those that came before her. But the 13 year olds only know LG, and they are the ones that actually care about the VMAs and are putting their votes in. It says more about the taste of the people who love her, than it does about her. She's just playing the game...and succeeding shrug

I refuse to take anything away from GaGa. 13 nods is astonishing though but the music video genre is a shadow of what it once was, so....

I'm not sure what to think at this point. confuse Is it more shocking that Lady GaGa received more VMA nominations than Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, and Britney Spears in their prime, or that she received VMA nominations from a channel that rarely, if ever, plays music videos anymore? Even when MTV was in its music video heyday, the VMA's were more a party spectacle than serious award show, so I hardly believe the VMA's have any relevance to pop culture these days. The Grammy's are still nominally about recorded music, the CMA's and ACA Awards are about country music, and even the BET awards are about black entertainment, but what purpose do the VMA's serve now if the only place one can see music videos are on YouTube?

I'm sorry I can't hate on this girl even if she's doing what others have done already ... good for her even though MTV is not the same anymore. I like her.

MTV (but more particurally the music industry) is straved for a star and Gaga is it. Also, I think some of her videos are up for the same awards, so she won't win 13.

The sad thing is the planning and over planning. Nothing just happens there anymore like it used to. I don't even care about creative or original....just be spontaneious!
