The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Ok, Needless to say i am VERY LATE. On listening to this cd even though i have had all the Fugees records and loved them, As well as most of Wyclef's.
This cd had a lot of hype and i knew it was going to live up to it, But man i didn't know this cd would have such an impact on me! i was only 8 years old when this cd came out but even with that the cd is only a little over a decade old. But man this cd has had a such an impact on me almost like the first time i heard Song' In The Key Of Life, Highway 61 Revisited, Sign ''O'' The Times, Born To Run, Sgt.Peppers etc.
And i know that's crazy saying it was like listening to those albums for the first time, But this cd is beautiful! This girl can sing, Mc & tell a story without taking one pause she is a true talent. Every song is great even the cover is fantastic! I Am just speechless this album is on my repeat for me like crazy. To bad she only released one album=[ but 1 masterpiece is better then 5 good cd's or 7 average cd's
Anyone else absolutely love this cd? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Miseducation hit in August of 98, I was young too. 9 years old. Obviously heard the singles, specifically the smashes 'Doo Wop' and 'Everything Is Everything' all over the radio. Knew it was good music, sung along to it, but didn't get the full scope of the entire album and message as I would years later. I remember being in a record store one day with my dad, this is about 5,6,7 years later and saw it. I told him that people say it was a really good album. He liked the Fugees but for whatever reason didn't take what I said to heart and chose not to get it. I, however, did. Started listening from start to finish and understood that it was a classic that every music fan should have. I ended up playing it for him and he was blown away. Instantly went out and bought his own copy and concluded that it was perhaps the greatest hip-hop record ever recorded and one of the greatest albums of all time period. My dad is 49, grew up in the 60s and 70s. Favorite album is Songs In The Key Of Life with What's Goin On by Marvin Gaye and Survival by Bob Marley being amongst the Top 5 as well.
Miseducation is in that same stack on his shelf.

The class room interludes, the subtle celeste playing through out the album, the clavinet, the doo wop harmonies, I loved it all.
Lyrically, its on a league of its own too.
What you want might make you cry And what you need ironically
Those words hit like a brick of wall the minute I heard them, and I still resonate with them today. Extremely personal album, I could see why it hit a nerve with people.

My manager works closely with her - in fact, he just got back from Portugal with her as she performed at a big festival there.
From what he tells me - she feels in a good creative space for the first time in a LONG time and there'll be new music next year. |

I remember copping it that August before going back to school. Come to find out my other friends had the CD too and we felt it was special. "It sounds classic" we agreed. It just reminds me of that school year, and people were playing it for years after.
Now I never listen to it.

My manager was one of the top dawgs at her label - RuffHouse Records. The main executives at RuffHouse actually shut down the label only a year after "Miseducation" came out due to creative differences I think (I'm not sure of the actual reasons why they shut it down).
Anyway.... I don't know if I'm supposed to share this information but Lauryn wants a lot of the people who were involved with that record to work with her, for her new album too. So that's why my manager is working with her again.
He was telling me that she absolutely tore it up at the Portugal festival. So it really does seem as if she's about to become quite active again with recording and performing.
He actually said to me that Lauryn is a lot like Prince in the sense that she pretty much marches to the beat of her own drum. Like Prince, there's always the possibility of her just cancelling an entire project on a whim. But, it does seem like the wheels are in motion right now for her to do something major for the first time since "Miseducation".

If she does come back i have two theories that her new album will either be great or average.
But i would lean towards the great peace i think....

That's great to hear that she's in a good creative space. Do you happen to know who specifically she wants to recruit from the people that helped her on 'Miseducation'? Does that include the New Ark musicians (the ones who sued her for credit or something awhile back)? If it does I'm glad they patched things up.

I truly hope she comes back with a new album next year. The industry needs her.

I think the album is overrated but while I understand its impact, I really don't think Lauryn has it in for another record, otherwise it would have been released 10 years ago. Also, both the industry and the listeners have moved on, we've got Janelle Monae now who does what Lauryn did plus 10 different things more yet outside the critics' circle she's barely making an impact. Lauryn releasing another album in the vein of Miseducation wouldn't do much at this point in my opinion.
She's one of those acts who refuse to continue making albums because they know they are most likely gonna fall hard and the critics would tear them apart for lack of impact and lack of sales. Shania Twain and Justin Timberlake seemed to embark on this route as well, as opposed to someone like Alanis who's comfortable that outside her fanbase she's a one album wonder and she keeps on releasing albums she likes for a small fanbase.

Every once in a while, an album comes along that I hope is the beginning of something new. I felt that way with OutKasts' "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below", The Beastie Boys "To The 5 Boroughs", and this CD by Lauryn Hill (as well as a few others).
But sadly, in the time since the release of "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill", Lauryn has managed to turn me completely OFF with some of her politics and much of her rhetoric. I don't know that Lauryn can pull me back in for another musical project, nor do I expect it would be as good as "The Miseducation...". Those were different times for all of us, she would have to come out with something that speaks to me TODAY, and I don't know what that would be; except I'd know it if I heard it. I would also need to get a different impression of her personally, and I doubt that's coming down the pipeline.
So, you know... we'll see. But "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was about as perfect an album as they get (...all the way down to the cover art).

I've been loving this album for like 10 years now. Still fresh on each listen. It's amazing how it never grew old.
One of my favorite cut was I Used To Love Him (duet with Mary J. Blige) early on and it still is! I would sing that song around my house like I'm this scorned woman even though I was just a teenager in high school Both Lauryn and Mary did their thing.
Anyone else digs the song The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill like I do? Simply soulful. Takes you back to the church scene in Sister Act 2 where she was singing with her homegirl.
To Zion, Final Hour, Ex-Factor, Doo Wop (That Thing), Lost Ones, Nothing Even Matters, I like all of these. In fact, I can't even say I don't like the rest. I just like the songs in bold better.
*Oh, I got a question to everyone here who owns the album. What is the hidden track? The version I have, they put Tell Him. I heard the US version has Sweetest Thing.

I only heard about label people, executives, etc.
Not sure about which musicians will be working on the project. |

I believe that you are correct In the U.S. "Sweetest Thing (Mahogany Mix)" was the bonus track and in the rest of the world it was "Tell Him." Both versions had "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" as the first bonus track.

From what I've heard of Janelle Monae, Lauryn is undoubtedly the superior vocalist and songwriter (melody/harmony wise anyway). I will say that I haven't heard Monaes entire album though... Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

That's weird because I still own the copy I brought when this first came out back in '98 and the copy I have has "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" and "Tell Him" as the bonus tracks. Who knows? I just think that "Tell Him" and "Sweetest Thing" would've worked better on the album even though "Sweetest Thing" was recorded before Miseducation was even conceived. Her cover of "CTMEOOY" was good, but it messes up the flow even though the album technically ends with the title track. Check me out and add me on:

classic album.
"ex-factor" is overwhelmingly good; it moves me everytime i listen to it. "when it hurts so bad" and "doo wop (that thing)" put me right back in 1998, in a good way of course.
unfortunately, i've accepted the idea that we may never get another album. How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

Here's an article where several of the folks involved in creating the album discuss it. There are not too many comments from Lauryn.

It seems like Lauryn Hill will make another album when she gets over her depression. Judging from what she's said in the past, she left the game because she didn't want to be exploited by the entertainment business. She also left due to the drama in her personal life. She hooked up with Wyclef during his marriage. I guess that's why the Fugees went their separate ways. Plus, rumor has it that Wyclef is an asshole because Pras can't stand him either. Her baby's daddy is married with children, yet she stayed with him and kept on popping out kids. The man won't get a divorce, but he stays with Lauryn because he wants fame and fortune. If Lauryn could get rid of the trash and surround herself with positive people, then she would be fine.
