Al Jarreau critically ill

Al Jarreau has been hospitalized in the french city of Gap, with respitory problems. Docters say his condition is critical. He was due to perform at the nearby festival in Barcelonette. For those of you who can read Dutch, here's the link to the news article:

http://www.nu.nl/muziek/2...itiek.html

Let's hope he gets well again.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

NOOOOOOO!!! shake sad

Al was my first musical love. This Time, Breakin' Away, Jarreau & High Crime were the soundtrack albums to my childhood.

Outrageously under-rated.

Fingers & toes crossed! pray

sad God...If you're up there listenin, we all know that your plans and the things you see are far beyond what we could ever know, but could you give us a little more time with Al Jarreau? This man as I'm sure you know has done a lot in his life with his gift, bringing joy and inspiration to so many across the world and he aint done by a long shot yet. So if you could please give him his life back and let us have him around for a million more years.....

I posted the same message on the Messageboard at Marcusmiller.com and Marcus' manager, Bibi Green, responded with the great news that Al Jarreau is feeling much better and will be able to leave the hospital soon.

What a relief!

The following message has been posted on Al's site. It reads:

Jarreau Health Update

07.23.10

To his fans and supporters, Al sends out a warm hello from the small French town of Gap. Last night, July 22, during his pre-concert warmup routine, Al decided to take precautionary measures and admit himself into the hospital, after his body did not adjust normally to mountain altitude. He was scheduled to perform in Barcelonette later in the evening.

As of Friday evening Central European Time, he is in good spirits, and looking forward to getting back out on the road. In the meantime, he is thankful for the excellent medical care he has been receiving in Barcelonette and Gap.

Al greatly values the opportunity he has to share his music and joy with fans around the world, and plans to rest a few days, then continue his tour at next Thursday’s performance in Nuremburg.

The Official Press Release from his European Agent is below:

AL JARREAU CONCERTS CANCELLED IN
FRANCE (BARCELONETTE),
GERMANY (OSNABRUCK & BRAUNSCHWEIG)
AND AZERBAIJAN (QABALA)

With great disappointment Al Jarreau had had to cancel 4 concerts on his current European tour.

The shows affected are:

22nd July Barcelonette, Les Enfants du Jazz
24th July Osnabruck, Europasaal
26th July Braunschweig, Stadthalle
27th July Qabala, Caucus Resort & Spa

On arrival in Barcelonette, which is up in the mountains, on Wednesday 21st July, Al became weak from the altitude and unfortunately was not able to perform his concert in Barcelonette the next day.

Al was admitted to an intensive care unit in hospital. He is now awake and his first question was to enquire about his wife, Susan, and his second question was to ask about his tour dates (he is always thinking about other people).

Al is now in a stable condition, and upon medical advice has been advised not to perform, to allow him time to recover.

He is hoping to recommence his tour on 29th July at the Serenadenhof in Nurnberg, Germany.

Al deeply regrets having been forced to cancel these 4 concerts and thus disappointing his fans, but is looking forward to returning to perform in these cities some time in the future.

Ticketholders for these 4 cancelled concerts should contact their point of purchase – the venue box office or ticket agent.

He has toured with this steady band for some years now. They often include in his show a few great medleys of other tracks (some are on Youtube).

One keyboard-player in that band is Larry Williams, a studio-musician who also plays saxophone, and with an impressive credits-list of artists

who hired him together with trumpet-player Jerry Hey. These cats are also very skilled in composing arrangements. Both of them were part

of the Hawaian group Seawind with lead-singer Pauline Wilson. Here below they perform with 2 other hornplayers on "Friday Nights".

This band is also impressive with heavyweight studio-cats, including guitar-player Jay Graydon, who produced a number of albums for Al :

The second track in the clip is "Breakin' Away", on which the vocal performance is a little off (imho),

but he re-performd a better version in later years (available on youtube)

Ps, the bassplayer from Al Jarreau's latest band (forgot his name) has a great voice

too (he released an album in the 90's), and he sings sometimes a track in Al's show.
