Can We Have Some Depeche Mode Love=] Depeche mode is one of my favorite band's and that's a big thing for me i love music from 20's to now blues, jazz, Rock, Soul, Hip Hop etc.
Depeche to me is a great band cause they have grown each album and just last year there new album is in there top 5 IMO very good stuff
To me Depeche each new album must have been what it was like when Stevie Wonder or Prince or Bob Dylan released new albums it was fresh, something you never heard before and it was brilliant they grew every album.
I Respect the band so much because they lost a band member after the first album leaving them to step up especially Martin Gore in writing and performing, Alan left in the 00's leaving them a trio Dave had a drug problem in the mid 90's but they came through it all to make nothing but great albums along the way.
my top's from them are
Music For The Mases Ultra Songs Of faith & Devotion Sounds Of The Universe Violator Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Absolutely! Depeche Mode is VASTLY underrated in many respects...especially Martin Gore's emotion drenched compositions, his facility on keyboards, backing and occasional lead vocals, as well has his incredibly tight and tasteful guitar playing..which he does not get enough credit for. Alan Wilder also does not get enough credit for his arranging, keyboard/piano skills, and solid and tasteful drumming, particularly on Songs of Faith and Devotion. Dave Gahan's powerful baritone works perfectly with Martin's tenor, and Andy Fletcher's organizational skills and business sense have helped contribute to their longevity as well.
The Devotional Period especially captured them fusing a hybrid of acoustic and electronic elements in a way that has never been duplicated since.

They are my sister's FAVORITE band! I wasn't really into them until I took her to a concert. I think I was more than she was. Thing is, I had borrowed her CDs so I could at least know what I was going to be listening to. Somewhere along the way, I started really liking them myself. My favorite song is "Home".
I still can't get into "Speak and Spell", though. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Agreed Martin Gore IMO & i am sure in many fans opinions is a musical genius
He is a multi instrumentalist & a great song writer as well he wrote many of Depeche Mode's best song's.
Alan was such a vital part to the band in the 80's and 90's much respect to him a genius as well shame he left the band... Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

WOO HOO:D
Home is off Ultra there darkest album and probably my 2nd favorite album great choice
Speak & Spell is an interesting album but probably the best thing is listening to that and seeing how far they have come from that album and it's a LONG LONG way Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

One of the reasons I resisted them as long as I did, is because I remembered the stuff from S&S and was turned off. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

One of the best bands of the 80s and early 90s. Classics somgs everywhere. If they are not as big as U2 it's because electronic music is not as popular as good-old fashioned rock
I'm not a great fan of the pre-84 years, Speak and Spell is a classic (and God knows that I love that album) but it's clearly a product of Vince Clark and his bouncy synths. A Broken Frame was uneven (despite some great songs here and there) and Construction Time Again was FULL of filler...
But since 1984 everything was SPECTACULAR; Some Great Reward, their true breakthrough, is amazingly consistent (and you gotta love that early industrial sound, for fuck's sake, Trent Renzor is NOT the godfather of industrial music!), Black Celebration, with its mix of goth & industrial dance was slighty cheesy, but it works very well when you're somewhat depressed ; Music for the Masses is EPIC (and the best example of the kind of music that David Bowie should have released in the late 80s, instead of the awful Never Let Me Down and buy this album even if it clearly sucks and the dull Tin Machine project); Violator is one of the best albums of all time and like 1000 times better than any album of the overrated Madchester era, nuff said ; Songs of Faith and Devotion was a fine document of a band tryin' to find a rockier sound in the turmoil of grunge and early britpop, while both Martin and Alan Wilder were suffering a severe case of writer's block, plus Dave's heavy drug addiction... not a happy time for the band but they managed to write their two best "rock" songs of all time, I Feel You and Condemnation
The (somewhat bitter) farewell of Alan Wilder marked the end of the golden age of the band; Ultra, their 1997 dark industrial comeback, had 4 undisputed new CLASSICS (Barrel of a Gun, It's No Good, Useless and Home), but the rest was forgettable; Exciter was a much better and worthy album in my opinion, with a more relaxed and mature electro-sound. Playing the Angel was very strong, some people were slighty disappointed because of the high number of slow ballads, but overall it was their best album (song to song) since Violator ; Sounds of the Universe was certainly worse, perhaps their worst album (overall) since Construction Time Again, but still a fine album, considering the lack of truly great albums during the late 00s....
Depeche Mode is one of those rare acts that has not released a weak album; some Lps are better than others, sure, but they have never released a dud.
A band for the ages, the kings of mainstream electronic bands.

Depeche and U2 are compared a lot and they deserve it there 2 band's came around the exact same time had there biggest hits around the same time and keep on making great records or at least good records.
A Broken Frame is probably my least fav album by them i mean some great songs like Satellite, Shouldn't Have Done That, Leave In Silence & Meaning of love is a guilty pleasure lol and it show's once again how far they have come.
Some great reward every song is good Something To Do, Lie To Me, People, Master & Servant, Somebody etc. great stuff.
Black celebration to me was there big steeping stone IMO it's one of there best love every single track!
Music For The Masses has always been my favorite record by them every song is just freaking great!, A Dark record with excellent lyrics damn just... one of my all time favorite records i love it to death.
Violator is there Joshua Tree obviously and the first record i bought from them. This is there best selling and it is a masterpiece it's back to there classic 9 track suite but every track is just wonderful from start to finish plus Clean is one of there best closers
Songs Of Faith & Devotion is in my top 5 Depeche albums. I Like the darkness and raw edge to it it was a different sound in a not so great time in there personal lives moments
Ultra IMO is there 2nd best i love the guitar and lyrics it's also there darkest album to date
Exciter is a good album i probably listen to it less then some of the others but Dream On, i Feel Loved, The Dead Of Night, Shine, When The Body Speaks are classics
Playing The Angel was beautiful i love it and Dave got a chance to write some great song's
Also IMO Sounds Of The Universe is a great record i enjoyed it alot!
But yes thank your for your respect and opinion much love for DM

Love 'em. Actually loved 'em longer than I've been listening to Prince. But short of Violator they've never been an album band for me. I always end up really loving a few tracks on each release and never listening to the others again. Thankfully, they usually play a good number of my favorites live. Which makes going to their concerts a very enjoyable experience.

i'm a big fan of Violator and Music for the Masses. Beyond that, there are scattered tracks that I really love, but I generally think of them more of a singles band than a band that has a long string of stellar albums. * * *
