BELINDA CARLISLE: Beats a 30-Year Drug Habit

How Belinda Carlisle Beat a 30-Year Drug Habit

By Nicki Gostin Posted Jun 2nd 2010 11:10AM
To Belinda Carlisle's fans, the gorgeous Go-Go appeared to have it all. She led a charmed life complete with musical success, a great marriage and unmatched beauty. But underneath it all, the singer has had her share of struggles. "I hit a lot of bottoms," she tells PopEater while discussing her searing new memoir, 'Lips Unsealed.' Those lows had an awful lot to do with a cocaine habit that grabbed hold of her for 30 years. Now 51, she's been sober only five years. "I don't know why it took me so long," she says. Her inspiration? The thought of her teenage son, Duke, whose dad is Morgan Mason, one day finding his mom dead of an overdose. "That's pretty low," she tells us. "You can't be my age and doing the amount of cocaine I was doing."

In our full interview, Carlisle talks candidly about how she kicked coke, the painful criticism about her weight ("It really messed my head up"), feeling bad for old friend Fergie and having no regrets about her gloriously-debauched days in The Go-Go's.
Your book made me sad! You struggled for so long.
Actually, it'd be really sad if it didn't have a happy ending. I'm glad I went through all that actually, and I'm really, really happy with where I'm at today.
How many years were you hooked on cocaine?
Probably 30 years with nine months off from drugs when I was pregnant. Everyday pretty much.

I remember reading about you living in the south of France, married to this really handsome guy and thinking you had an amazing life.
You never ever know what's going on underneath the surface. I think the thing that kept me going along for so long is I clean up really well. I could afford to have facials and massages and dress nicely and fool myself even that I was OK and fool everyone around me that I was OK, living in the south of France, jet-setting everywhere, looking great. Everything must be perfect. You know, I held it together and I gave that impression for years and years, but I think the last couple of years I wasn't fooling anybody.
What's amazing is that you didn't go to rehab.
I thought if it wasn't going to work, I'd go to rehab. That was kind of the last thing. I made so many promises to so many people so many times through the years that I was going to stop and I couldn't keep it and I knew it deep down inside. I hit a lot of bottoms. I don't know why it took me so long. I guess I just wasn't ready. It was weird when I quit. I was struck. I just knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would be dead if I continued. I just knew it came down to choosing life or death, and I chose life. I was at the end of a three-day binge. I remember thinking how humiliating it would be for my son to have his mom die in a hotel room of a cocaine overdose. That's pretty low. I knew if I didn't stop I'd be dead. You can't be my age and doing the amount of cocaine I was doing.

You were friends with Fergie. What's your take on what's being going on?
I feel really bad for her. Honestly, I couldn't even watch the tape. It's horrible. I feel really bad for her. To do something like that, you've got to be in a really bad place. God knows what she was thinking, but I feel really, really bad and embarrassed for her. I haven't seen her in ages. I just hung out with her that one summer. It was just one of those summer flings, I guess.

Over the years, the press really focused on your weight.
It really messed my head up. It really affected me in some ways. It really pushes my buttons today, although not as much because I figure if I'm going to be age fifty and obsess about that kind of stuff then something really wrong is going on. It absolutely fed into my whole eating disorder

How do you eat now?
It's funny because I haven't been in America in over a year until coming here for the book, and it's different in Europe and India, where I spend a lot of time. I forget what it's like. My eating habits are totally normal, I never deprive myself, and I just don't eat like a pig. I think I have a healthy relationship with food now. I do know that when I spend too much time in LA it messes with my head. In some ways, it's such a hard place to live in. It's really tough if you have any insecurities at all. I think being a woman in American society, where they definitely put emphasis on how much you weigh, it's just too tough.

Your son came out to you as a teen.
If there are any parents out there who are struggling with knowing their kid is gay, wanting to throw them out or not loving them -- which I don't understand at all -- then I hope this book helps. So I know if this can open somebody's mind just a little bit then I'm glad I wrote the book.

Is that why you included it?
It was a big deal in my life when my son came out to me. Most of my friends are gay and lesbian, but when it's your own kid ... My son's openly gay, so it wasn't like I was revealing anything. My son said the same thing -- that maybe it'll help some parent who's unaccepting of their child's sexuality.

What do you think of the current crop of female singers?
Honestly, I don't pay that much attention to new music. There's some good music out there though. I love Beyonce, Rihanna, Florence and the Machine
The Go-Go's were quite debauched in their day.
Well, we were just doing what the boys did. I mean why not? We were young, we were rich, no responsibilities. We were famous and we had a good time with it. We had a great time.

What's a typical day for you?

If I'm home, I get up and do yoga and go for a hike and then I take an old lady nap. I read a lot. Same thing at my place in Goa, India.

How does one get friendly enough with you to score an invite to your house in France?
We're pretty private. It's funny because Sandra Bernhard was saying, "You've never invited us to your house," and I was like, "I never really think about it." I'm so over the place. This past year, I've hardly been there myself.

So the answer is you can't.
(Laughs) Yeah.

I admire her honesty about her previous dishonesty about her coke habit (not joking, but I couldn't resist the construction!).

She's doing a signing here.

How do you stay on drugs for 30 years and not look like road kill? Well now we know how she lost all that weight cuz those pics of her from the GoGo days show her on the heavier side. Cool she's clean but damn.....30 years????

P.S. I'm a believer in the AA tenet that nobody "beats" a drug habit - you're always just one drink/hit/smoke (yes, alcohol and nicotine are drugs) away from succumbing again. Luckily, I never was much of a drinker or pot-smoker, but I've gotta be ever-vigilant about my nic addiction.

CARLISLE'S MADONNA ENVY SPARKED EATING ISSUES

BELINDA CARLISLE was so jealous of her rival pop star MADONNA's lithe figure she embarked on a series of diets which ended in a dangerous eating disorder.
The Heaven Is A Place On Earth hitmaker, who shot to fame in 1981 as the lead singer of The Go-Go's, was blighted by drink and drug addictions and weight issues for years.
In her new memoir, Lips Unsealed, the star reveals she pushed herself to lose weight after becoming envious of the Material Girl's slim frame in her 1980s heyday.
And the singer reveals that the dieting became so bad, she weighed herself 10-15 times a day, before punishing herself by binge eating up to 6,0 00 calories.
In the tome, she writes, "I thought she (Madonna) looked phenomenal because she was skinnier than me." She adds in an interview with ABC, "In some way, the drink and drugs is easier because it's abstinence, but with food, you got to eat every day, and I had a terrible relationship with food. If I did eat something wrong, I would be on the treadmill for hours and hours. And if I did have a bite of that cookie, then I would beat myself up and eat as many as I could and count the calories as I went along."

Thats funny because IMHO, her musical legacy will live on much longer than Madonnas. Now, all around media foot print, Madge got it made...My whole point is, Carlisle should have stepped back and realized her own place in history and not worry about one aspect of it...one that is so superficial to begin with. Actually, that's a hard task for all of us...all is understood I guess.

Belinda Carlisle: Secret drug use was "horrible thing to have to carry around"

Eighties icon Belinda Carlisle is opening up about her music, her struggles with drugs and alcohol and her life as lead singer of the iconic group, The Go-Go’s, and as a successful solo artist.

In her new autobiography, “Lips Unsealed,” Carlisle speaks of her secret drug habit late in life, her success, her regrets and gives up some major dirt on numerous celebrity encounters over the years. The book is Larry King’s pick of the week!

Carlisle spoke to us at LKL Blog about the book, about her life and about how she feels as The Go-Go’s are about to start their FINAL tour ever.

LKL Blog: The book is so brutally honest – literally about sex, drugs and rock and roll. How hard was it to put this all down on paper and why do it?

Belinda Carlisle: It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I’ve always known I had an extraordinary life. And that I had a story to tell. And I’ve been toying with the idea for about 20 years, of writing a book. I always felt that I needed some sort of angle for it and little did I know what the angle would be. I just felt like it was a really good story, as it does have a little bit of dirty laundry, but for the most part it’s a book that can inspire people. It shows you that you can teach an old dog new tricks. And that you can overcome abuse and addiction. And also for women, especially my age, that their lives aren’t over. For me, my life is better than it ever was. It’s more vast and I’m in my 50s. I wouldn’t have thought that back when I was younger. I thought I’d be winding down. But I’m not.

LKL Blog: Did you think about that when you were younger? Did you think you’d be where you are today or did you not think that far ahead?

Carlisle: I always kind of wondered where I would be. I never thought my career was going to last as long as it has and that I’d be doing this after 30 years. I work a lot in Europe still. I wouldn’t have thought I’d be living in the south of France. Or between France and India and having this kind of crazy life and interests outside of music. I wouldn’t have thought it could be so amazing at this age. I was just talking to a girlfriend discussing how amazing 50 is.

LKL Blog: I didn’t realize you were still heavily using drugs, cocaine, up until just a few years ago.

Carlisle: Nobody did. I was clean from cocaine for probably about five years. And as I write in the book, all it took was one evening. My program was I could do anything. Including hallucinogens. But I couldn’t do coke, because that would be my downfall – but it crept back into my life. It was a horrible, horrible thing to have to carry around because everyone thought I was sober. I had gone through so much the first time around.

It got to a point where I would feel so guilty whenever anyone asked, so I would just say I used the 12-step program as a guide for living. But after a certain point, I couldn’t blatantly lie and say I’m sober. I just couldn’t. I carried a lot of shame around about that. It was hideous to try and hide it. There were times when I was out and about – out of my mind – and people thought I was sober.

LKL Blog: How are you doing today?

Carlisle: Oh. It’s been five years and it’s weird. I was kind of struck sober. I’m completely into my program. I have a spiritual base between my program and my yoga. I know you can never say never, but it’s off my radar. I never would have thought after 30 years of consistent using that it would be off my radar at one point.

LKL Blog: Was there any hesitation at all for this book? Anything that was too hard to write about or gave you pause before you put it in?

Carlisle: The drugs, I didn’t care about. It didn’t bother me to talk about it because it wasn’t that hard. And I figured it could help somebody out there. But for me, the most painful stuff to write about was not being the mother that I could have been and should have been because I was so sick. And that was really, really hard to get into and painful to write about.

LKL Blog: How much of this did your son know about? Did he read the book? Did he know about your life?

Carlisle: Oh, he read the book. He knows everything. I’ve brought him to meetings with me. I want him to know. I want him to know how hideous it all is. I though it was important for him to know. My mom and dad, I told them not to read the book. I don’t want them to have to read about how hard it was for me. My husband, he read the book and he didn’t realize the extent of my addiction. He knew that I was struggling, but he didn’t know I was a consistent user.

LKL Blog: So what are your son’s and your husband’s reaction to the book?

Carlisle: They loved it. They thought it’s funny and sad and they appreciate the honesty. And they are very, very supportive. They realize that it was a hard thing to do. There are three things my husband says you have to do in life: have a baby, plant a tree and write a book. And I’ve all done all three now.

LKL Blog: Looking back at everything you’ve been through, how it’s shaped you and how your life has turned out, would you go back and do anything differently?

Carlisle: Well, the only thing is, I would have been more present as a mother. I just had no idea the hurt I caused to the people around me. I would like to take that back. But I wouldn’t take my addiction back. Although it was really, really hard – and I have to admit, it was fun in the beginning – it was really hard to go through and painful, but I like that I had to go through that to get to where I am. And I wouldn’t have traded that. And I wouldn’t have found my program without it. I think the world would be a much better place if everybody did the 12-steps without any sort of problem because it’s such an amazing, amazing way to live.

LKL Blog: The Go-Go’s are on tour this summer, this July, right?

Carlisle: Right, it’s the last tour.

LKL Blog: How do you feel about that?

Carlisle: I think it’s time actually. We’ve been working together for a long time. And my life is in India and France and now, honestly, I don’t want to work that hard anymore. I want to enjoy the fruits of my labor and do crazy things. I think some of the other girls might have wanted a few more years, but it’s kind of hard for me to go back and forth. So we all decided maybe it was the time to move on.

I love it when groups decide to part on good terms.

nod

but i'm sure a couple of the other girls aren't too excited.

Jane even admitted to being jealous watching Belinda's solo career take off while hers went nowhere. (in terms of popularity). there was a lot of jealousy in that group over the years. they had done some Go-Go's show's in the 90's without Belinda, but they were short lived. that would be like seeing the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger. lol

if you can find it, check out that VH1 Behind the Music special on them.
