I'm one of the people whose not feeling Janelle, yet! I'm still tryin', though. Hopefully she'll click for me one of these days, because I dig that she's on her own trip. Doing things like working and touring with Of Montreal.

Thanks for posting all that. I went to see Erykah Badu in the UK last week, would have been nice to see Monae as support like the US. Hope she plays the UK soon, i would have no qualms about travelling to see her.

I think the context of her album surpasses the stuff she released as singles, greatly give her a another try, guys.

I've been listening to The Arch-Android & 20Ten pretty much back to back for the past week or so. Janelle is amazing and definitely on her way up. She deserves all of her props! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Ugh, are music jounalists really so lazy that James Brown comparisons are the best they can come up with? If you close your eyes Janelle sounds nothing like James!

I haven't read any, but I'm assuming from what I've seen of her that they're referring to that "dancing" that she does. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Glad to see her getting more exposure. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Certainly there are some surface similarities, particularly as you mentioned when it comes to her dancing, but I think it's lazy to call her the new James Brown. There are many more differences than similarities.

It seems like Janelle wants to be called the "new" James Brown. He's the only person she sites as an influence when she's interviewed on TV, and she's been impersonating a lot of his stage persona with the JB cape, horn section, and the way she talks to her band (saying "one more time" repeatedly, etc).
I still say she's just like Prince however. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee
"Water can nourish me, but water can also carry me. Water has magic laws." - JCVD

I'm sorry... I hated her tribute on the BET awards.
I'm just not feeling her. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

It definitely could have been better, but the "Girl" instrumental her band did at the beginning of the performance was perfect. "For those who know the number and don't call...Fuck all y'all"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Fair point, she does seem to be inviting James Brown comparisons but musically there are not many similarities.

Has anyone caught her live? I'm debating over whether or not I want to see her perform when she comes to my city with Erykah Badu and a bunch of others. If you will, so will I

She's through the roof live. Even better then she's in the studio. I've seen her several times. Trust me she's gonna steal that show. She does it every single time. I saw her open for Badu in Boston. And the crowd wents nuts for her. Starting rushing the stage during "tightrope" and everything!

The CD is great!
There's more than meets the eye when it comes to Janelle and I hope the folks doing stories on her take the time to listen.
Chances are they'll figure it out by the time she does a possibly more strightforward second CD, and then they are going to be asking "Why isn't it like the first CD?"
By then she will have changed directions.

I honestly think Janelle Monae is gonna be a superstar with in a few years. Heck i think by the time the grammy's role around. And i predicting she'll be walking out with a few. That Janelle Monae be a well known name.
And her label belives in her too. which is HUGE! I mean how many 22 year olds with no major releases get a major recored contract that gives them compelte creative control?!? Those are contracts a 21 year old Stevie Wonder got, and a 19 year old Prince got. Now i'm not saying she on their level already. But thet fact her label (Bad Boy/Atlantic) believes that much in her, tells you what they think she'll be. She's smart about the music game too. real smart! She did her homework.

I hope you are correct on this because i want to believe it so much. Music for me has been stale for too long and Janelle looks like the perfect cure. I have my ticket for the London show and i cannot wait to see her. Thanks again for the heads up about the gig, i would not have known about it unless you told me. I should check her website more often.

I really want to like her. She's clearly a talented performer. But the album was a bit of a disappointment.
Sadly, the songs just aren't there.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
She's very talented but I don't think she has her own identity at all, and that is what is keeping me from getting into her.

Yes, I believe she'll be around for awhile. That would be awesome if she does win a grammy.
