Erykah Badu @ Brixton Academy-Pix
I went to see Erykah Badu at the Brixton Academy in London on Saturday 24th July. I am no writer so i wont attempt a review. But i will give you some details for those who are interested. There was no support as such, a dj played for a while and had to come back on because Badu was late, there was some booing going on as the dj had to play more and more tunes. By the time the band took the stage the audience were at fever pitch. Badu finally arrived and played an amazing show. Most tracks were from the "New Amerikah" albums, with some older classics thrown in. Highlights for me were "Apple Tree" with Erykah playing her drum machine, another high spot was the inclusion of the Sun-Ra track "Nuclear War." The show ended with a nice long version of "Window Seat." All in all a fantastic gig, great sound, and Badu and band in top form. I can't wait to see her again.

Just wondering if U happen to know the name of that -very- slow funk song that was played towards the end of the show..? I've looked but can't seem to find it anywhere...

There was one thing i did not recognize, but i am not sure when in the show it was. There was a section of Gone Baby Don't Be Long played just after Window Seat as Erykah was waving goodbye, could this be what you are refering to? Anyway, glad you got to see the gig, hope you had a great night as i did?

This shitty wysiwyg editing crap is becoming a major issue for me.

Thanx but that was not it; I have in the meantime found out! I was refering to the last part of ''I want you''. Thought that was particularly funky.. And yes, I did have great night indeed.
4:59..

Apparently there's some mixed reviews especially from people who have been to more than one Badu show. It was my first Badu concert and I loved it, really looking forward to seeing her again.
Highlights for me; Danger, On and On (and on), Liberation, I Want You, Window Seat.

Here's, IMO, quite a harsh review of the show...

I'm thinking that the reviewer is not really a fan of Badu, though i suppose that is what soulculture wanted, and not some babbling Badu worshiper. Some of the review was a little inaccurate however, 15minutes from when the band started before Badu took the stage is a little exaggerated.

There's a few inaccuracies, such as the costume changes, the drawn out instrumentals, the times etx. But to be fair if you're not feeling the concert all of the above would have *felt* true. I know for me it felt like that DJ was playing for 5 hours

That is pretty accurate (about the dj)

The DJ wasn't that bad though, liked that he played a lot of MJ, although I didn't appreciate him messing, I mean mixing, with Don't Stop('Till You Get Enough). His set was quite unimaginative, 1/3 rnb. 1/3 hip-hop, /3 reggae/reggaeton. The last 1/3 got quite tiresome for me quite quickly and was out of place for the concert.

A half hour or so before Badu came on i was not even hearing the tunes he was playing, crowd around me were getting very impatient.

I don't blame them really, the queue started at 5, doors at 7, she strolled on at 10. I don't mind people starting late but at least give us a decent support act. Janelle Monae was supporting her on her US dates and we got a DJ seems a little unfair.
I saw Any Winehouse a few years ago and doors opened at the same time but she had two support acts, came on at 9.30ish and stayed untill midnight. That's pretty cool [Edited 7/29/10 6:25am]

Having Monae as support would have (for me) made that the gig of the year no question.
