Why don't you quote a couple of his lines that you think are so "lyrical" and "genius".

You definitely got these right. With Ice Cube, Death Certificate, Predator, and Lethal Injection is the best 3 consecutive album release in hip hop genre. This doesn't even include what he did with NWA.
Chuck D-Lyrics were like a preacher delivering a sermon. Knowledgeable, controversial, yet always engaging.
Eminem-Was really good, then fell off. Subject matter became stale
From 04-present, I'll give my vote to Kanye. He may not be a great lyricist, but he has the most consistently listenable albums over that past 5 years. Solid usually from beginning to end. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

If I had to pick one it would be Andre 3000. Rakim, Ice Cube, Nas, and Big Daddy Kane would round out my top 5. Of the more recent cats only Biggie would be up there for me. LL and Pac had a lot of good songs but I have a hard time saying they were the best-- although they were good too. The D.O.C. was a favorite but he only had one album (with his voice intact).

I don't know if I'd say "thread over". Anyway, how old is that? Is it really old or is it kinda recent?

I knew about it in 2008. | |

currently, nobody can touch eminem...the dude is on point with his lyrics, delivery and his popularity is off the charts.
When he adds his bits to others' songs (Airplanes, Forever) it instantly becomes the best part of the song.
G.O.A.T.
However, rakim had undeniable flow....
Tupac and Biggie = Overrated. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Oh, let me change my answer then.
If I were to separate the lyrics from the songs I might consider going in another direction but the idea is to rap over the music. So when you put it all together-- lyrics, music, voice, flow, image-- I prefer him to other rappers. I haven't seen them all live so I can't factor that into it. Nas' work is somewhat spotty as is Rakim's. I almost wanted to put Big Daddy Kane up there on top but Outkast has more quality songs in their catalog to me and Cube loses a few points on content. No other mainstream rapper is really in that conversation to me. (I never got into Chuck D and Krs-1).

On a mainstream level Eminem has very little competition.
But to say that he is untouchable is just retarded.
Eminem has some of the most shamelessly corny lyrics and concepts in recent memory.
His delivery has waned since The Eminem Show, he used to have such a smooth flow but now his rhymes sound forced and you can tell he is punching in more and more.
You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Sorry.. didn't mean to pick on you. Andre's name pops up often when this topic comes up these days and actually you did a good job explaining why.

Tupac Eminem Nas
None of them had to sell their souls to sell records. They are true to themselves and still made hits.
Biggie Jay Z
These two are responsible for that "money, hoes, clothes" mentality that we've been stuck with and can't seem to escape. To this day dudes is still flossin' right out the gate trying to impress the "lifestyle" upon the rest of society. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Lets not forget to include Puffy in that group. And yeah, I know he's nowhere near being considered a 'decent' rapper, but he needs to accept his share of the blame for the whole bling era. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!
