JOHN LENNON – GIMME SOME TRUTH

Eight of John Lennon’s classic solo albums and other standout recordings have been digitally remastered from his original mixes for a global catalogue initiative commemorating the music legend’s 70th birthday, which falls on October 9, 2010.

Overseen by Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s GIMME SOME TRUTH campaign will launch on 4 October (5 October in North America) with the worldwide release of eight remastered studio albums and several newly-compiled titles.

Double Fantasy, 1980’s GRAMMY Award winner for Album of the Year, will be presented in a newly remixed ‘Stripped Down’ version remixed and produced by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas, co-producers of the original mix with John Lennon. The new stripped down version of the album comes in an expanded 2CD and digital edition pairing the new version with Lennon’s original mix, remastered.

The campaign’s other new collections include:

  • A hits compilation in two editions titled Power To The People: The Hits
  • A 4CD set of themed discs titled Gimme Some Truth
  • A deluxe 11CD collectors box with the remastered albums, rarities, and non-album singles, titled The John Lennon Signature Box

Yeah, great, and I know no one makes me buy this again but I already have all his REMASTERED albums. How many times can you remaster an album?

Broke again naturally pout

I have the same problem... but I guess as technology improves, it's nice to get these great works in the best format possible.

The "stripped" version of Double Fantasy sounds quite interesting.

Because I am a CD-aholic, I will probably wind up buying this. We'll see.

But Lennon's solo career to me was a REALLY big hit and miss affair. There are quite a few tracks at the beginning of his post-Beatles career that do absolutely nothing for me.

What's sad is I think his final album(s) right before his death contained some of his most beautiful work, including his Beatles catalog.

His solo work is a mixed bag but I'd rate Plastic Ono Band up there with anything the Beatles did. It'll be interesting to hear the Double Fantasy stuff with a rawer production too.

I SOOOO agree. Some absolutely terrific material on Double Fantasy and Milk & Honey.

I actually created my own version compiling the material from both, since it was all recorded about the same time. It works incredibly well as a full, coherent album.

I'd rank his post-Beatles albums like this:

1. Plastic Ono Band

2. Imagine

3. Double Fantasy/Milk & Honey

4. Walls & Bridges

5. Mind Games

6. Sometime in New York City

7. Rock and Roll

What? Where's Yoko's Walking on Thin Ice? razz

Seriously - we're in total agreement here. It's like the break just allowed him to tap into some serious musicality and he was recording truly special music all over again. It still makes me sad when I think about it.

I looooove "Walking on Thin Ice" cool I've definitely got a soft spot for Yoko's music as well, although I know that's a sorta rarity. confused But I do like it separate from John's - I think it works much better standing on its own.

a further testament to what would have and could have been had he not been murdered, it would have been interesting, Ironically Julian is set to release his new cd, his first since 1998.

Plastic Ono Band was released in December 1970, actually. It has a place of honor in the Best Albums of the 70's list i'm compiling for Moonbeam's next survey. cool

Ah that's what I get for getting years wrong. lol Of the songs I heard, "Working Class Hero", "God" and "Mother", I can tell the album is great. I watched the Classic Albums episode of that particular album.

Miles

Walls and Bridges is my fav Lennon solo album. He has much of old muse back, he's more laid back and seems less self-obsessed in his lyrics and there's a nice variety of stuff on there.

Bless You and #9 Dream rule cool

Yeah "Walls and Bridges" is definitely more relaxed... and I agree "#9 Dream" is one of his best singles.

"Plastic Ono Band" is the definition of self-obsessed, for sure, lol biggrin Never really thought about it in those terms, but it's totally true. But I guess that's why its so great - it's like a bearing of the soul unlike what you'd normally hear from a major pop artist back in those days. Didn't get alot of confessional stuff.
