Chuckii Booker Appreciation

In honor of a recent post of one of my fav musicians Chuckii Booker producing a Marvin Gaye tribute, here's a great slow burner from his 2nd album 1992's "Nice N Wiild" and a couple of New Jack classics by Troop

YAAHHSS!

THE CHUCK! worship

Of all the artists folks talk about on this site, this brother is the only man who was ever fully capable of inheriting Prince's mantle.

Can tear up a keyboard, a bass, a drum kit and a guitar just a well as Prince.

Vocal skills and range that will shut most others down.

Produces writes and arranges everything impeccably.

He can even dance!

Nothing forced or trying too hard, this brother did it with ease and was the real deal.

In the words of the late great Rufus Thomas, wait a minute. lol There's been more than a few people when Chuckii was still behind the scenes doin production 4 his godfather Barry White, that were as tough as our hero on all the instruments....

Carl McIntosh (Loose Ends)
Terrence Trent D'Arby (Sananda Matrieya)
Raphael Saddiq (Toni! Tony! Tone!)
Babyface
Teena Marie
Andre Cymone
Larry Blackmon (Cameo)
Lenny Kravitz
Roger Troutman
Rick James
Jesse Johnson

Of this whole list, only Terrence comes the closest, being the only one who could actually dance (splits, spins, etc) and have true riveting showmanship.
But still, even he lacked the instrumental presence of both Prince and Chuckii.
Because not only do Prince and Chuckii play a bunch of instruments, not only do they have wide vocal ranges, but they are distinctive soloists as well.
Most of these folks as awesome as they may be, are missing at least a couple of ingredients to put them over the top in Prince's and Chuckii's leauge.

But Ill say even though Chuckii had the potential to inheret the throne, ..he didnt even want it!!
He would rather be in the background! confused

So so sadly true. I worshiped the guy...LOVED his studio output...and virtually all his production efforts (MANY that weren't mentioned here)....but dammit....he kept spendin his time as "musical director" for acts like Tina & Jan....all the while I'm yellin "Get your MEGA talented ASS back into the STUDIO, man!!!! We NEED ya!!". I ultimately concluded that the B.S. of the recording industry was just more than he cared to deal with. He's a great guy, a MAJOR talent & funky as all get-out....but you're right. He just didn't want it in the end, methinks.

If Teddy Rileywasn't around, Chukii would've been a GOD right now.

"Let Me Count The Ways" and "Front line" were the jams - shows him off as a SICK Bass player too!

Check out British artist Geoffrey Williams whom had the song "Sugar Fly" produced by Chuckii... awesome...

One thing though, is that I always wanted to hear Chuck do some material in the rock or pop genre. Him being such a tremendous musicain, just to see what it would sound like.

Because all Ive ever heard him do was the pure R&B and funk stuff.

If you get that 2nd album 1992's "Nice N Wiild", check out track 2 "Love Is Medicine" for his rock/pop side.Look out for the opening guitar solo might make ya hair stand up or wake up ya neigbors if you play it as loud as it's supposed to be played wink

I Should Have Loved U is the song. I was listening to that the other night. I was trying to get some inspiration. So I turned the lights off and I put on that jam.

Nice N' Wild was a GREAT album

You know this is how Chuck would have done it, if it was his.

The original track is a cluttered mess compared to this. Great find!!!!!!!!!
