I always found funny what America considers alternative smile

Could you be more mainstrean than INXS, a-Ha, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins or Erasure? lol

I was a pop boy in the 80s so I loved (still do) that music you list nod

Here's my top twenty of 80s alterna-rock records, limited to one per artist. If I allowed multiple records from one band, 1/2 the list would probably be records by the Fall.

1 ) The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
2 ) Opal - Happy Nightmare Baby
3 ) The Feelies - Only Life
4 ) The Mekons - Fear and Whiskey
5 ) Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
6 ) The Bats - Daddy's Highway
7 ) Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
8 ) The Triffids - Born Sandy Devotional
9 ) The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro
10 ) Killing Joke - Killing Joke
11 ) The Go-Betweens - Spring Hill Fair
12 ) The Rain Parade - Emergency Third Rail Power Trip
13 ) Alan Vega - Alan Vega
14 ) The Apartments - The Evening Visits...And Stays for Years
15 ) Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
16 ) That Petrol Emotion - Babble
17 ) Colin Newman - Commercial Suicide
18 ) The Woodentops - Giant
19 ) Coil - Horse Rotorvator
20 ) Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me

In regards to four of the biggest "alternative" bands (which all started out as sorta "college rock" bands and morphed into various degrees of maintream success), these are my favorite albums

1. The Cure -- Disintegration is the critics' choice and while I think it's great, I'd choose two albums that may not even be proper albums, but were marketed as such in the U.S.

"Boys Don't Cry"

"Japanese Whispers"

2. U2 - without a doubt "War."

3. REM - a lot of great albums, with "Murmer" and "Automatic for the People" seeming to get the most acclaim, but I'd pick "Life's Rich Pageant" or "Fables of the Reconstruction."

4. New Order -- "Low Life" and "Technique"

In quick response to the other posts

Crowded House was another band i was going to mention but to be honest i only really liked there debut it was a great album the other's where... kind of lackluster for me.

BTW The fall is a good band sadly i only have one album so i am not a HUGE fan but i have Slates which is a classic of the underground 80's very classy record.

The Bats i am only familiar with Daddy's highway album.

The Cure alot of people say Disintegration is there best to me it is there masterpiece. But i know alot of fans prefer there older stuff i also love the old albums.

Boys Don't Cry is probably my 2nd favorite album from the band & Pornography my 4th just such complex records dark, Brooding but beautiful i love it.

U2- War is a great record i would rank it pretty high with U2's history

Sunday Bloody Sunday, Seconds, New years Day, Refugee, Drowning Man, Surrender Just a fine fine album!

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

ALSO A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO TFF

I Had to reedit my original post cause i stupidly forgot one of my favorite alternative band's of the era Tears For Fears

They are the one's who got me on the band wagon for New Wave, Alternative etc.

The Hurting- is a haunting masterpiece one of my favorite albums of all time it is there Sgt.Peppers or innervisions or Sign ''O'' The Times

Song's From the Big Chair- to me is there Joshua Tree and it's what got me into them and alternative in general this album means alot to me!

Sowing The Seed's Of love- was such a 360 shift it's artsy and powerful a great way to end there 80's trilogy on a high note

Elemental- Yes Curt is sadly gone but i find Roland does a fine job on these song's and there's many gems here. Cold, Goodnight Song, break It Down Again, Dog's A Dog's Best friend, Gas Giants

Raoul & the King's Of Spain- Eh...... a bit of a misstep here some of the lyrics seem forced and a little over the top i am glad Oleta Adams came back for a song though\

Everybody Love's A Happy Ending- FINE FINE FINE ALBUM!, One of the best of the last decade IMO

If this is truly there last album Let It Be this a fantastic way to close there door

Saturnine martial & Lunatic- The b-sides here some are very good- Pharaohs, The Bible of Dreams

And also not to forget the great song from the best of Tears Roll Down!

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener
