Interesting clip. I heard the remake of Return of the Mack last week. Look forward to hearing the tracks with George Clinton and Chuck Brown.

The single has been serviced to radio. It is among the top ads for Urban AC radio. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I'm glad they're back, also, but I would love to know why they released a remake of a 90s song for the first single. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Wasn't that their M.O. to begin with? Covering songs or recording "reply songs" to hits?
I'm sorry, I don't know that much about them outside their work as the rhythm section of most Stax records.

I'm guessing U are being sarcastic.
But Harlepolis is right, the Bar-Kays have been lifting themes from popular songs as long as they have existed.

I heard some clips of the new songs but as much as I love them, I don't really like the new stuff It just seems like a seasoned group who are still trying to keep up with the young folk, instead of staying true to their sound and creating some original and funky. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Actually, their producer, Allen Jones, would come up with "sound alike" songs 4 them. "Nightcruising" sounded like "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James and "Freaky Behavior" sounded like "Super Freak." A lot of their 80's material resembled that of other "hot" acts' music. Their '85 album, "Banging the Wall," strongly resembled Prince stylings musically. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Yep,in the 80s,they frequently came out with songs that "borrowed" heavily from other songs....
"Freakshow On The Dancefloor" is an obvious rip-off of Midnight Star's "No Parking On The Dancefloor".
"Dirty Dancer" features the exact same synth riff as Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean".
"Dance,Party,Etc" sounds just like Prince's "D.M.S.R.".
They were funky though | |

It'll be some sellout shit like the last two albums they did in the 2000s which I didn't buy. Andy is a four letter word.

That's a real problem when Old School artists make "new" music.Instead of staying funky, they water down their sound, trying to appeal to a younger crowd.Sometimes, they even add hip-hop elements to their music When older artists make a new album,I always have to listen to it before I buy it.

lol,I was thinking of you when I made my most recent comments (above)

I'm not only sick of older artists making shit hop, but I'm also sick of them making neo stool. I didn't grow up on boring shit and I refuse to lower my standards just because most of the younger generation has the taste of a thugged out nursing home. Andy is a four letter word.

Many times,I wish that they would just release a collection of outtakes from their glory days, and call it their "new" album That would be more satisfying than a new album that sounds like all the other crap on the radio right now.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's exactly what I wish they would do, especially older artists like Prince who continue to put out an album on a regular basis. I can see why the new music isn't nearly as good as their older stuff because there is nothing to inspire them. Back when most artists were making good music, there were plenty of other artists with plenty of good stuff on the radio to inspire them when they made their own album. But just look what's out there today to inspire an artist....not a damn thing. That's why I just wish older artists would released some of their old unreleased songs for their new album because they were made at a time when no one had any exposure to the shit hop and neo stool bullshit of the last 20 years. Jamming is all they could do because it was all they knew. Andy is a four letter word.

speaking of Prince, have you heard his new CD yet?

It always makes me cringe when older artists get on these radio shows and hype up their new albums like it's the best thing since apple pie and then when you hear the samples of the songs you are like "are you kidding me? You excited to put out this piece of shit music?". It's like of like selling out in a way, because they aren't conforming to their true sound, just trying to create something new but make it sound like they are reaching to a younger audience...when that younger audience doesn't even know they exist. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

No. If I still had internet access at home, I could have heard it, if you know what I mean.... but I only have access to the internet at work these days and the computers have blocks on downloading, music players, and video players such as youtube.
I've heard great orger descriptions of the songs over in the Prince section describing it as sounding like his 1980s work, which is right up my alley. However, when I heard the description of the last song, it didn't take a genius to figure out it was shit hop and I'm tempted to not even buy the album at all because of that one track no matter how good the rest of the album may be. I'm just tired of older artists contributing to the plague that is shit hop instead of trying to defeat and find a cure for it.
When it's released, I may have a friend to make a copy of the album (without the last track) but I just don't want my money contributing more to the problem and my days of giving Prince a pass just because he's Prince are over. I'd feel like a hypocrit if I gave him a pass. Andy is a four letter word.

I know the Bar-Kays have lifted themes from other songs, but I don't think they started out intentionally doing it. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

The Prince album is pretty good.I especially like the song "Laveaux".The entire album is very 80s retro. Some songs sound like the "Controversy" era.I think you will like most of it.
