Smashing Pumpkins Offer Free New Single Download

[img:$uid]http://i47.tinypic.com/nef53t.jpg[/img:$uid]

July 8, 2010

The Smashing Pumpkins have released a free download of "Freak," the newest single from their current album Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. The album is composed of 44 songs and is being released in the form of eleven four-song EPs.

The new track is currently available for download through the Pumpkins' official website and will be included on the second EP, titled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 2: The Solstice Bare.

Billy Corgan and company recently kicked off their U.S. tour with a show at Los Angeles' famed rock club, the Viper Room. Throughout the tour, the band will randomly select a group of fans to come into the venue early and listen as the they perform their sound check.

"We expect to play at least five to six songs each day," Corgan says on the band's website. "And if things go well possibly a little more . . . . No less than the first 20 people in line would be let in, and we will have some system where you wouldn't lose your place in line if you have to go back out of the building."

"We hope this will be a fun experience for everyone," he adds.

Every song so far has been great. I just downloaded Machina II from 2000, and I'm still playing that too!

Where can you buy any of this Teargarden stuff? I don't see a store on there.

Amazon. But the CD is really expensive because of the way it's packaged. A 4-track CD, a 1 song 7" 45 and a little tiny Spinal tap-like Stonehenge thingy.

What exactly is on the vinyl 7"? I thought it was a single sided deal with the "Teargarden Theme".

Thanks. I understand that the vinyl is really shoddy as well. I'm really disappointed that the CD wasn't sold on it's own, so I downloaded the Flac CD and vinyl rip. I don't like to do that if a product is still available domestically from the artist, but that set is just way too much $$ for what it is - a bunch of over-packaged trinkets. I will buy the 44-song release when it comes out, though.

I don't think the vinyl is that shoddy (and I collect SP 7 inches). It's not 180 gram heavy weight stuff, but it plays just fine (and if they're included in future boxes I'm sure the complaints will be addressed). Also, this box is actually out of print. Any that are still available are from vendors who purchased them while they were in production. As far as the rest of the box goes, it's, eh, interesting, I guess. The box itself is very well made, but I'm not sure I need eleven boxes that don't explain what they on their spines on my SP shelf. The obelisk is kind of silly, but I guess it might look cool if you someday have 11 different types of stone lined up next to each other (assuming they keep putting them in the limited sets). The CD itself is really all that matters, though. It plays fine, sounds good, but is just in a cardboard sleeve. I'm a sucker for SP vinyl, so I may keep buying them just for that. However, Billy has said repeatedly that all 44 songs (or however many they actually end up recording and releasing in these limited sets) WILL BE repacked and given a wider release when the project has been completed. But at the rate they're moving that could be a couple years from now.

Freak, imo, is the best song so far. And I'd place Astral Planes, the last one, right after it. That makes me pretty excited to hear what they are going to come up with in the future.

I got in to a couple of the soundchecks for their Fillmore run in 2007 (I went to umm, a lot of those shows lol and know a bunch of people who work at the Fillmore). That's a nice treat for fans because they don't always soundcheck songs they're going to play that night.

^ Cool. Thanks for the lowdown. I read a review on Amazon that stated this person's 7" marbled vinyl was actually "bubbling". Colored, and especially marbled vinyl is usually made from lesser quality materials and are full of imperfections as a practicality, but this guy said the SP single was a step up from a magazine giveaway (flexi). But colored vinyl is not supposed to be a workhorse medium, but an occasionally played collectors item anyway.

Owata, a song Billy has been performing live with various versions of the Pumpkins since at least 2008, but has not yet been released as a studio track.

Astral Planes live on Record Store Day, before Billy hired the new bass player (this guy is just fill in style).
