I prefer Voodoo.

Just has more of what I like. He goes further with Brown Sugar, which may make it less radio-friendly but deeper overall. I've listened to and enjoyed everything on Voodoo, whereas there's still some stuff on Brown Sugar that I don't really bother with.

His version of "Feel Like Makin' Love" is miles better than the original to me, and that says a lot, since the original is an R&B classic.

His cover of "She's Always In My Hair" is not groundbreaking or anything, and it really has nothing on the original, but I still enjoy it quite a bit. It would have fit in nicely on Voodoo.

Really hoping a new album drops this year.

Both are modern day classics for different reasons. Love em both! It's been awhile since I've listened to either one of them though.

D is one of my favorite artist that's come out in the last 20 years or so. I also remember liking what I believe was his first song ever released for the Motion Picture Soundtrack for "Jason's Lyric," a song called "You Will Know." I remember veteran cats talking about this teenage preacher's kid, out of Virginia who was going to do big things.

I absolutely love "U Will Know." So great of D to make his first mark with such a powerful, uplifting song.

You can see a very young D'Angelo at the beginning of the video (with a nice fade) and of course Brian McKnight gets him to sing the song out.

I originally dug on Brown Sugar, but after repeated spins, Voodoo was the clear standout for me.

The first couple listens sounded "murky" (I remember calling it his "mumbling album")....but it has a great "vibe". It's one of the few that can play straight through & never seems to get old.

Agreed on "I Found My Smile", too...great track.

Same here. I called it the "half-speak, drunken stupor" album. But after listening to it years later, i appreciate it, but still hold Brown Sugar in higher regard.

I'm not a huge fan but I do have both albums. For me I would say that Brown Sugar probably features better songs but Voodoo has a better sound. Hopefully, if it is ever released, his next album will combine great songs with a great sound.

I know there are a few on the hits collection but are any of these b-sides you guys are talking about collected or would a person have to find them using "other" means?

As I mentioned above, there´s the "Yoda Album" bootleg which contains a couple of songs that were either on soundtracks, or never released before, or b-sides.

Looks like this:

I know. I'm still listening, but I'm also reserving my opinions for a special episode of my radio show on July 22, when Fenwick, JohnArt, possibly Squirrelgrease, and others, and myself review the album. wink

Voodoo had everything that I love, live music, good arrangments, good playerse etc but I just never got into it. I tried..trust me. It just never really moved me.

HOnestly, I don't know why he has been so celebrated. I'm sure he's good...but certainlyi not to be mentioned alongside Prince. I think Maxwell has done much more.

I'm a little shocked it's taken this long for someone to bring up that tired Maxwell comparison.

confused Where have you been? Maxwell's debut album came out not long after D'Angelo's. As the 2 male superstars of neo soul, they have been compared often ever since.

And both are often compared to Prince.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Maxwell is a great vocalist and has written some great songs with his partner. But as with Michael and Prince, you can't compare a musician with someone who just sings. D plays a few instruments and writes his own music. I've never seen Maxwell play anything. Not that he can't, I just haven't seen him do it.

There's a bootleg titled "Voodoo Outtakes". Great set, and a nice extension of the album.

It took me a LONG time to get passed his "Pete Rock Beat" song(Where's Cinnie? I know he'll appreciate this).
