Melanie Fiona has opened up about the direction for her next album, The MF Life.

In a backstage interview at the recent Essence Music Festival, Fiona told blog Sound-Savvy.com that the album is a "graduation" from her earlier work.

"I feel better now. I want to have a very fun kind of perspective on this album - still real content, still real stories but kind of that cheeky 'oh my gosh, did she just say that' fun kind of way."

She went on to say: "This sound is going to be definitely still soulful. But what I'm going to call it is stadium soul because I feel like, now that I've performed around the world, performed in small venues, large venues, I feel like the soul on this album is the graduation from the soul of the first album."

The MF Life will serve as the follow up to Melanie's 2009 release The Bridge, which produced the top 10 hit "It Kills Me."

No official release date for the new effort has been announced.
