I would guess that artists who get their hits by paying radio stations can't fill an arena unless they paid people to be there. lol

It's the ticket prices, and just the fact that people who are touring this summer (e.g. Rihanna), it feels like they just toured here in 2008 and 2009.

I just skipped a Roots show because I was like meh, I just saw them 2008, with their last album. I could never admit this on OKP but even that wasn't the best show ever.

You know what I would LOVE to see this year, but I don't think it is possible, is Rock The Bells. Not because of the performers, but the sheer combination of all those people at once, and guaranteed setlists (many are performing just their classic album). So I hope Rock The Bells is going well this summer.

Well again we said things like this years ago. I can remember saying on this forum how you can have a jampacked bill of CURRENT top of the charts artists and still not be able to sell out freaking the smallest of venues even. One example a few years back ALicia and Beyonce did that tour or dates together alot of the shows didnt sell past 70-75% even in major cities. NOW i totally agree on the Giant venue example I HATE LARGE VENUES i always have, when i heard Prince was doing MSG for the Musicology tour i dreaded going to the venue, because i knew i would have to pay mad money to get on the floor and SEE the show, i cant pay alot of money and NOT SEE the show, when i went to see Mariah on the emancipation tour i paid 250 to be in front from a ticket agent, because, i knew how hot she was going to look on that tour, and then i thought, well i want to see hear not be up in the mezz and see an ant on stage with a great body. And even though i hate General Admission Shows, i at least can control my place by just getting there mad early, like i did for a-ha at the Nokia in may, in front 3 nights straight, for 40 bucks each night, now to me, 40-50 is what a show should cost and i feel in LARGE venues and arenas, the price should reflect the seat more big time, i mean at some baseball stadiums still in this day and age u can sit at the top of place for 5-10 bucks. I think that kind of thinking should be happening in Music and Tours especiallly with new acts, and YES the EAGLES too, they should be free or very little at this point because they labeled a tour a few years ago FAREWELL! (hint barbara streisand and your 1000 dollar tickets). Alot of times it is way out of the artists control, but its the venue and the promoters who have to make their money or what goo is it too them, its almost like having a label for touring, think how cd prices NEVER went down, they went up, LABELS did that, now ticket prices go up....whos behind that???

The music and touring business are both ignorant, now they're paying the price for all the unneeded prices.

Well the thing is that like other things especially atheletes, you have the asshole owners who pay 150 million for a player, then everyone wants that check, its really a combination of things, but i just feel that artists or labels or sponsors have to be sensible, why are acts like Rihanna and Kesha even on tour, i mean this shows the DISCONNECT between the charts and who goes to see a show, in the 80's the charts and the top touring artists were one, now you have acts like Bon Jovi Elton John still ruling the touring charts, but not on the radio or your video station, total disconnect and why the business has been run into the ground.

There's an odd sort of justice about this considering they were the first band in history to just say fuck it and charge $100 a ticket.

I understand that people are on a budget and maybe can't afford ticket prices above a certain amount. But I think some fans are too anti-business and think artists should put on a show for them for free or at a loss. Most artists work hard to get a show together and they deserve to be paid for all their hard work as do the backing musicians and dancers etc. It's their job just like your job is your job and they deserve to be paid for their hard work. They shouldn't be forced to entertain everyone for free.

The reason that baseball tickets are less expensive is because the owners are making most of their money from tv revenues, not from selling tickets to the game. Except for the very top tier of artists, most artists aren't able to sell the rights to their concert to tv for a lot of money and thus need to make all their money from ticket sales.

I think artists, well actually promoters and sponsors need to stop the whole arena show type thing, i know its usually for bigger artists who can sell alot of tickets per say, but their are others that play these big places because of ego and wanting to be like so and so and have no business doing this, if ALicia Keys and Beyonce on a bill together cant sell out the garden, then time to rethink who you are and your audience and what they want, the reason some have to have big shows with costumes and all that is because their is not much else to them, Rhianna has like 14 changes in her show, mainly because there is not much else to keep your interest, and it gets her press coverage.

I disagree. Sure, people need to get paid but concertgoers shouldn't be gouged the way we are. If I pay 10, 15 or 25 bucks for a service fee what service am I provided for that money? Absolutely none. I think people are just sick of getting ripped off.

Yes, it's true that the cost of just about everything keeps going up but not at anywhere near the rate of the cost of a concert ticket. I think that part of the problem is when an act is guranteed a large advance in addition to the ticket sales. This forces the owners of the venues to charge more in an effort to break even. I think these types of guaranteed advances should be done away with. If someone is only able to half fill a venue why should they be rewarded for it?

For me being ripped off has very little to do with the price. I've been to shows where I payed $200 or more and I got my money's worth because the artist put on an amazing show that was well rehearsed and they were enthusiastic and appreciative of their fans. Conversely, I've been to shows that were $40 or less, where I felt ripped off, where the artist sang badly, was off their mind on drugs, was rude to the audience, left the stage early etc.

I don't mind paying a larger amount of money to see something that is well done and of musical merit.

Some people think artists should only do these simple shows with no costume changes. Yes, it's a given you must have talent musically, but I see nothing wrong with an artist doing more involved shows with costume changes and dancers. If it was just about the music, you could just sit him and listen to the cd. To me a great concert incorporates the visual as well as the purely musical. A stripped down show isn't necessarily better. Not all artists who do costume changes do that because they have no musical ability or to cover that up. They do it because they want to give the audience a full concert experience.

Some people just refuse to accept that it's a business and artists and promoters and everyone involved are motivated by money just like we all are in our careers. You want it to be all about creativity and art, but the world doesn't work that way. Art doesn't pay the bills.

Eliminating guarantees would be brutal to older artists who haven't had a hit in awhile or for whatever reason don't have the drawing power anymore. It's easy to accuse artists of being selfish, but from what I see some fans are just as selfish. They don't respect artists' need to make money and maintain their careers. If you want good music, you have to value it by being willing to pay for it.

Wouldn't that be something if there was a channel just like you got an all-sports station, that broadcasted concerts all damn day?

Could have commentary on the highlights, like drawing a circle around Prince's good-tar and sayin "now watch this solo"

smile

(Then artists could make money from tv revenue too.)

I'm not sure I get your point. Having recent hits has little to do with an artists drawing power. In fact, quite often the opposite is true. Many of the top touring acts haven't had any hits in 20 + years. Huge advances are not offered unless the promoter believes the recipient will draw a large crowd. If an artist doesn't draw crowds why would anyone pay them exorbitant advances? If these advances were eliminated it would mean lower ticket prices and that the artists would actually have to earn their paycheck rather than getting a guaranteed payout no matter how many people attend the concert. What's wrong with expecting people to do their jobs and pull their weight? I value the live music experience but I value eating more and I find it upsetting that the concert experience is becoming more and more the exclusive domain of the wealthy. It's a very shortsighted tactic that unless it's changed will leave the concert business in worse shape. If you train young people to stay away from live music what happens when the older generation dies out?

I think the Eagles are touring too much an oversaturating the market, sure people will pay 100$ to see them. but how many times? the same is happening with Aerosmith.

And Rihanna is touring off of a weak CD with fans who are too young to pay for her tickets. Parents would rather pay for the kids to see Taylor Swift than the girl who wants to give it to you like "boom boom boom"

Yeah there are no record breakers touring this year.

Gaga is doing well because she's putting on a show on the scale of Madonna or Britney for half the price.

No what im saying is alot of artists make the show ABOUT costume changes, if i wanted to se you in 20 different outfits and pay for it, then do a photoshoot and i will buy the magazine or book. Most artists NOT ALL that use this do it because that is what is drawing people more so, those who rely on the gimmick dont have much more going on musically, and some can balance. I dont buy the full concert experience, i get that when the artist plays for 2 hours and puts on that KIND of show, this isnt a broadway musical, some artists think its that now to get more money but as you see its not working for them. Im not paying a 100 dollars to see Mariah Carey and then only getting a 85 minute set and 5 costume changes, in that time too, im not paying to see you try on clothing, or if i am, then dont bill it as a concert.

On the other points i will agree that many are just as selfish, and feel the artist OWES them something, technically when you buy that ticket you get what they want you to get, they are not required to play HITS, BUT i do feel that when you have a catalog, and you want to charge that kind of money, you need to play, i dont need to sit through 2 opening acts when U have 10 albums, and if i have to you need to be playing 2 hours, plain and simple, i mean people bitch about cds costing too much and there they get 60 minutes of music, why would they want to pay ten times that amount and get the same length performance?
