IT WAS 5 YEARS AGO TODAY...
The incomparable Luther Vandross passed away on July 1st, 2005. The day he died, I was just completely shocked and words cannot describe the many emotions I felt that day. One of the greatest voices in music history, not just R&B music nor pop music... His definitive intrepretations and song stylings still amaze millions today. It has been 5 years since his passing and I just want the org to remember his music and enduring legacy. R.I.P. Luther Check me out and add me on:

I still can't believe that he's gone.
His spirit is still VERY much present.

Damn, it seems like only yesterday, I'm just now accepting the fact that he's truly gone.
R.I.P. to Mr. Luther Vandross Truly one of the greats, hands down. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

I remembered that day like it was yesterday. I knew he was sick but I thought he was getting better. Then when I received that news, it took me a while for my thought process to render what I heard. Then when "I Rather" played, I started . After that I felt a little better and knew he was at a better place.
Ironically today my parents are playing the Luther Vandross Soul Train episode from '82.

I'm listening to these two classic masterstrokes tonight before cruising out: The Night I Fell In Love (1985) and Busy Body (1983).
Two sensual masterstrokes full of rich, carefully-structured and delicate tunes on the quest for romance and its many rewards as well as their consequences...

Because Luther had a tremdous amount of radio play, and became so mainstream...sometimes it's easy to overlook just how vocally talented the man was. Luther started out with the group "Change" and they had kinda like 2 hits that were in heavy rotation one was called "Holiday"...the other "Cream Always Rises to the Top" (I believe that's what it's called, if not...then that's what the hook/ chorus of the song is).
When I first heard "cream", I was a little girl and I yelled out "Oh my gosh who is that man singing in the background....his voice is butter". I'm talking about I was probably like about 8 years old at the time, and Luther's BACKGROUND vocals sent shock waves up my spine. I hadn't EVER heard such velvety tonality such as his. Another demonstration of unbelievable backgrounds by Luther is when he sang the scat backgrounds for Stevie Wonder's "Part Time Lover".
Then BAM! Never too much is released onto the masses. My gosh....that's all I can say. I've sang with many people (not that I can "really get down") and I've heard many people sing, but there will never EVER be another Luther. EVER!!!!!!!!
Now...my second male vocalist is Jeffrey Osborne. I'll describe him in 4 words as to not "jack" the thread:

I remember exactly where I was when I heard he had passed. I was getting ready for work when they announced it on the morning news. I cried all the way to work that day and when I got there I told the girl I worked with that he had died and she burst out into tears right there in the treatment room. We cried together like we knew him personally but I believe that we both cried because we knew that there would never be another like him. Even when he was alive, I would cry everytime I heard 'Here and Now' because that song is just soo absolutely beautiful, lyrically and vocally, to me that it touches my heart and soul. Even now when I listen to that song I still ask myself this question: "Is this the definition of true love?" Luther, you are greatly missed and not forgotten but my what an amazing concert they are having up in heaven right now. The angels are soo lucky. RIP Mr. Vandross Prince Rogers Nelson

Check ( if you're interested ) more soundclips from the two 70's albums with his group "Luther" on Youtube. There are at the moment just too many of them over there in order to post up here.

I was jamming this cut all night long. We all know Chaka's version smashes the original, but it suits Vandross' voice well too.
I also like Charme's version of Toto's 'Georgy Porgy.' I actually perfer this slightly over Toto's because it has Luther's vocals.
