Wut? I love George but he's never that sexy and gorgeous.

Isn't saying your influnced by James Brown pretty much the same thing as saying your influnced by Prince and Micahel Jackson? I mean those guys who btw are my two favs of all time are both heavily influneced by JB

Many artists do this to avoid obvious comparisons.

she is a little james brown dancing Frankie Lymon. That is why as is trying to be. Its not cute. She looks like a boy.
She will do anything for fame. Its not even that serious. After 2012 money, fame, material things wont even matter. You won't be able to enjoy that stuff with Martial law and the NWO.

No. I just want to eat him I don't listen to j-pop.

Really? You know her personally to know this? Hilarious!

Aww, that's not fair....I don't think she looks like a boy. In the imagery department, she's just a female version of Prince who doesn't play instruments. I mean, if Prince can wear women's clothes and hair styles and still appear to be a man, Janelle can wear those little suits. She's the opposite type of androgyny. For all of those out there drinking gallon sized bottles of "Haterade" because Janelle Monae did not list Michael Jackson as her source of inspiration...things do not have to always be black or white (no pun intended).
Perhaps Ms. Monae felt MJ was an amazing artist...wonderful, however perhaps she was not necessarily influenced by Michael....perhaps she was only influenced by the people that Michael was influenced by. That doesn't mean that she did not "like" Michael. She's a female Grace Jones / James Brown hybrid on a Red Bull overdose. It doesn't surpise me that she did not list him. Heck everybody is not "influenced" by Michael Jackson nor Prince for that matter. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I guess androgyny "is in" in the two thousand and ten. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

i have seen little boys look like her minus that puff thing she has on her head

Didn't you know all black artists must give the same generic inspiration quote to the press.
"I grew up listening to my parents old Stevie Wonder albums and then when I saw Thriller i knew i wanted to be a musician... blah blah blah"
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I don't see what you mean, but you technically can say that about any female who performs without typically "feminine" make-up/outfits. For example, give Rihanna a unisex natural, remove those false eyelashes and lipstick, and put her in a suit with flat shoes on, she would look like a "boy" too. Flip it around, if Janelle dressed like majority of other current female artists, I guess you wouldn't say she looks like a male. So would you rather she conform and dress like every other female "musician" in popular music right now?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
its NOT about her not dressing sexy, she has a roundish head, and i seen many elementary boys who have round heads and look like her. Rihanna has more of a long face, she has more a mature look, rihanna doesn't look like a boy, even without make up.
In the elementary school age most kids have round faces.

I like her because she is fearless & doesn't care what people say about her. Just like someone else this site loves to tear apart that bares there name........... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Interesting reactions to JM.
We see countless posts on this board that say they're tired of the cookie-cutter, over-sexed image for female artists. And, when someone like that comes along, she gets slammed.

Well maybe she does not have the best voice in the world but she is doing something different with her music. It is better than a lot of the crap on the radio. In addtion, JB influnced MJ so what is wrong with giving props to James.

Or they really do like cookie-cutter, over-sexed bimbo artist. Look at Lady Gaga and keep in mind you have one orger on this topic who is uncomfortable with Janelle looking boyish when I doubt that orger has any problems with Lady Gaga sitting at a Yankees game with her top open
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
...and Gaga dressed up as a man, makeup and all. I find Gaga strange, and desperate for attention, and all that BS she wears, takes away from whatever talent she's supposed to have.

I agree, y'all.
I also think her shout-outs to generations past -- ifluences' influences (as well as her own), mind you -- are probably nods to her desire for longevity and to be seen as someone with some sense of music history.
I get a sense, particularly with the JB-ish "Tightrope," that she's very, very strategic in her direction and comments. Interesting artist. Sure, some of it probably is gimmickry. But, it's neat to at least see gimmickry (if that's all it is -- and I doubt that) neither dressed up in New Age incense and shock value nor rehashed trash and shock value.
Here's hoping JM continues to lift expectations.

JM must be doing something right! Seems people are divided over this young songstress the way they are about a certain somebody that this site is dedicated to!

Ain't nobody divided over Prince. There's good Prince and then there is sucky Prince. Prince has been on suck mode over the past decade. Space for sale...
