RIP Sugar Minott
I know there are not that many orgers who care much about old school Reggae artists but this man deserves an obit.
Reggae singer Sugar Minott dies at 54By HOWARD CAMPBELL, Associated Press Writer Howard Campbell, Associated Press Writer – Sun Jul 11, 7:57 pm ET KINGSTON, Jamaica – Sugar Minott, a smooth-voiced singer and producer who helped to popularize reggae music, has died. He was 54.
Minott (MY'-naht) died Saturday at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica's capital, Kingston, his wife Maxine Stowe said Sunday. She did not disclose the cause of death.
Two months ago, Minott had canceled performances in Canada after suffering chest pains. Born in Kingston in May 1956, the singer, whose real name was Lincoln Barrington Minott, launched his musical career as a youngster in the late 1960s as a member of the African Brothers reggae trio.
He started a successful solo career in the 1970s, gaining a following in Jamaica's dancehalls with songs like "Vanity" and "Mr. DC" while recording for the famed Studio One, the Caribbean island's first black-owned music studio.
In 1981, he had his biggest hit with a cover of the Jackson Five's "Good Thing Going," which reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom's singles chart in March of that year. Minott was known for nurturing young talent with his own Black Roots record label and Youthman Promotion company. Reggae and dancehall artists such as Junior Reid and Tenor Saw began their careers under his tutelage.
"Sugar Minott was a man who gave a lot of strength to the music although he got no love from the business," Reid said.
A new Album from Minott, "New Day," is scheduled to be released in coming weeks. Stowe said funeral arrangements had not yet been made.

I love old school Reggae artists such as Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, of course Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.But these days old school reaggae seems to be the only kind of Reggae I´m remotely interested in. I stopped following Reggae when Dancehall became more and more aggressive.Are there any newer artists you would recommend?

I heard about his passing yesterday, another sad loss to the world of reggae

The thing that I always thougt was odd about Sugar is that he never got his teeth fixed. He must have had the money. Maybe he had a phobia about dentists.
The Jamaican people never held it against him though and many of his vintage album covers were close ups of him with a big gap toothed smile on his face. He did a lot of love songs too.
Can't imagine anything like that happening here in the US. Think of Jason Mraz with no front teeth having the polularity he enjoys and you'll know what I mean.
As for old school artists you might enjoy searching out on Youtube, try Johnny Clarke, Jimmy Riley, Pat Kelly, Johnny Osbourne, Max Romeo, Don Carlos, Mykal Rose, Earl Zero, George Faith, Dr. Alimantado and of course Jimmy Cliff.
Harmony groups to check would be The Gladiators, Culture, The Abassynians, The Mighty Diamonds, The Wailing Souls, They Maytones, The Heptones, The Meditiations Well Pleased and Satisfied, Prince Lincoln Thompson and the Royal Rasses and of course Toots and the Maytals.
That oughta keep ya busy for a while.
I totally agree with whoever said they checked out of the reggae scene when dancehall started getting all digital on us. I haven't heard anything in a long time that's any good in that genre.
But we do have Midnite and Groundation to thank for a lot of great rootsy but modern stuff today. Those are the only newer artists that have turned me on recently.
Unfortunately most of the young artists in Jamaica are now mixing a lot of rap and hip hop in their stuff. I guess the world is becoming homogenized... and not in the direction I'd like to see it go.
