I didn't know the members either for a long time. My mom bought me my first Heatwave

album Central Heating when i was in the 6th grade. Only Johnnie Wilder and his brother

Keith stood out to me because they were the lead vocalists in the group when you saw them

on tv. Johnnie was the pre El Debarge(pretty boy that can sang). Later Rod Temperton stood

out for me because of his work with Quincy Jones. I later only learned about JD Nichols when

he joined the Commodores and he joked that it was his calling in life to replace lead singers in

a band. Everyone knows about Johnnie's tragic motorcycle accident which left him paralyzed

until his death which led JD Nichols to the group. I remember reading about Johnnie's motorcycle

accident way back in middle school but even then i didn't realize how serious it was.

I recall hearing that Johnnie's car got hit by a dump truck, no motorcycle involved. I may or may not be correct, of course. Their bass player on the first two albums, Mario Mantese was also involved in a car crash before their third album and had to quit the band. And, as if that wasn't enough, before the band even got in the studio to record their debut LP back in the UK, their rhythm guitarist Jesse Whitten was murdered. He was replaced by Roy Carter. Talk about misfortune sad

Yep,this band has had so much tragedy neutral In addition,Quincy Jones pretty much "stole" one of their most talented members,Rod Temperton. He continued writing and producing for his former bandmates, but he also gave away ALOT of great songs to other artists.

This band is a perfect candidate for an 'Unsung' episode.

Looks like all of their albums are getting the remastered treatment lol

'Hot Property'(1979 album) remaster due August 10.

'Candles'(1980 album) remaster due August 10.

'Current' (1982 album) remaster due August 4.

These three "Imports", being released by Epic Japan in August don't seem to be "remastered" as best I can tell, unlike the "Too Hot To Handle / Central Heating" 2fer being released on the Edsel label. Although "Hot Property" is promoted as having an additional track. I may pass on these Imports in hopes that the Edsel label will be issuing actual remastered versions of them.

I'm sure these 3 Imports will quickly sell out, and by passing on them in hopes of remastered versions, I may run the risk of missing out altogether. But I'm really trying to purchase my favorite reissued classics on CD ONLY if they've been remastered. As it is now, over the years I've collected 3 and 4 different versions of so many of my favorite albums (8-tracks, LP's, Cassettes, CD's, Imports & Remasters).

I hear ya nod I may hold out for CDs that are really 'remastered'.Plus, those imports are really expensive....$29 at CDUniverse!

Interestingly, there is also a Japanese import box set that includes the mini LP sleeve versions of all five albums ('Too Hot To Handle','Central Heating','Hot Property','Candles' and 'Current'),released on August 4.

CDUniverse has it for $204!! mad

In any case,I'm thrilled that their catalog is finally getting the attention it deserves.

See, now this really messes with my head, lol. They LOOK like the same product, different ID numbers, but I'd expect that could be the case depending on what those numbers actually represent. And true enough; we KNOW those Prince discs were NOT remastered.

You know, the thing is - I believe sometimes that "REMASTERED" term gets thrown around inadvertently. There have been times even when I have ALMOST bought a disc assuming it was remastered (because it was a reissued Import), until I read all the fine print to realize they were not. I need to see the name of the actual technician that handled the remastering process!

It really doesn't seem to me that these discs are actually remastered, and I would think that if they were, CDUniverse would not have missed listing that really strong selling point. And it concerns me that it's these "Japanese Only" discs that are saying they're remastered.

Then again, before the world (...or ME in particular) went all "REMASTERED" crazy, Imports were the way to go if you were looking for superior sound quality. I'd just bet that even if these discs weren't actually remastered, they probably sound great. And if I'm not mistaken, they're not otherwise available on CD anyway, are they? I think the only other Heatwave discs out there are like a half-dozen "Greatest Hits" packages. And these days, I am super-anti Greatest Hits, lol.

Nevertheless, I think for now I'm just gonna hold tight and be content with the KNOWN remastered 2fer (Too Hot To Handle/Central Heating). I don't think I'm going to trust these other releases are actually remastered. But hey, you get MAJOR KUDOS for tracking these babies down, lol. You put in some work to find these man!

I think the Record Companies have finally figured out what will sell (...and who's buying!). Grown folks don't mind spending the pennies for the good stuff. These are definitely going on my list.

I can't wait for Bell & James albums to be remastered and re-released! I don't believe any of them were ever available on CD before. I loved EVERY song on each of them.

I have both Bell and James albums on vinyl. It would be nice to finally get 'em on CD nod

and yes,it seems that record companies have finally realized that people still buy CDs and want these classic albums. There's definitely a market out there for this type of music.Release it and we will buy it!

I've been on so many vinyl digs lately that I don't feel like I actually "own" the album unless I have it on vinyl. A CD release doesn't really turn me on anymore since I can record CDs myself. lol

Not to get too far OT here, but about doin vinyl rips...

I FINALLY did mine about a year ago. I used my Techs running thru a Vestax analog line mixer..direct to my soundcard. Pulled up the files in Soundforge & tweaked as needed (then did whatev file compression on each).

Working every night & a few hours each weekend, it took me about 9 months to get thru about my vinyl archive (about 15,000 discs). Just to rip the rare shit (that never got issued digital).

Dunno if I'd go the USB route....depends on what software you've got post-rip. Either way....those warm analog source files' results beat the HELL outta what get churned out digital (to my ears).

I would probably use Adobe Audition. And I hear your point on the warm analog, though I've never had the opportunity to just sit down and compare the two side by side, but it just seems to me that I prefer digital, lol. Because it seems to me you have more precise control over the total sound. Nevertheless, I completely understand the appeal of warm analog. nod

It was more amazing than I expected. That "brittle" digital sound is GONE from these MP3's. Noticed it first in the car.....the analog rips just BOOM. Worth more than a few smiles, for sure.

I hadn't looked at that site in a long time until following your link just now. Those prices are actually a lot lower than I thought they'd be on some of that stuff. In fact, I thought all Ray's stuff was out of print - glad to see it's available. I'm definitely bookmarking it this time, so I can go back and take a deeper look.

When you get into P's 20ten give us a little review.

I can understand you being more excited about Heatwave simply

because you know what you're getting.

You hit the nail on the head! I'm honored you'd be interested in my review, when airbody and de Mama is chiming in with their twocents on like a hundred different stickies, lol.

What I've done is I've dumped everything into one big playlist and put it on random play. I put 20Ten, The Heatwave 2fer, ConFunkShun's recent 2fer, Big Boi's new one, Brian McKnight's recent one, Rick James' recently remastered "Garden Of Love" (...on CD for the first time), and a remastered CD by Odyssey (Native New Yorker) that just came out. And they all mix well together. What I like about listening to them this way is that each song has a chance to slip up on me without me being so critical about what it is I'm listening to. The songs can just wash over me and hit me on a more subliminal level, I'm not just sitting there wondering if I'm gonna love it or hate it.

So while I'm not sure if I've heard the whole Prince CD yet, so far 3 songs on 20Ten have made me stop to look at what track it was playing: "Sticky Like Glue", "Beginning Endlessly", and "Sea of Everything". In fact, "Sea of Everything" had me break out in a big smile, because it's one of those classic Prince love songs where he just works it to death, lol. Kinda put me in mind of "International Lover". But you know Prince; no two songs are truly the same. Haven't heard anything on it yet that I've been tempted to skip through, and the vibe is easy going, much like the artwork on the cover. You can feel Prince in his comfort zone. I look forward to getting into it more.

But before I get in trouble for straying too far into THAT area (and to bring it back on topic), this Heatwave 2fer is bringing back all kinds of good memories and feelings I haven't felt in so long. These two discs are a solid part of the soundtrack of my life. And you can tell they took great care in the handling of this remastered project.

but still would be interested in your take on it once you get around to listening to the

whole joint.

You know PDogz i always forget that there's actually a forum for just Prince music. lol I'm so used to coming to the Non -Prince section. I've seen some of the reviews there now but still would be interested in your take on it once you get around to listening to the whole joint.
