I'm Sorry to Say But What Has Happened To Lionel

Now....

I Will fully admit i have always liked Lionel Richie but only became a huge fan in the last year

But i got Lionel, Can't Slow Down & Dancing On The Ceiling

GREAT ALBUMS! I mean classic=]

besides the hits on the albums other song's i loved

Serves you right is a funky little gem, Just put some love in my heart is a gorgeous ballad

Can't Slow Down is a rocking slow song with fantastic vocals, Tonight will be alright with Eric Clapton is epic & Deep River Woman sound's like an awesome classic rock diddy & Night Train is one of my favorite Lionel track's just killer

I Picked up his new album for cheap and it was just............... BAD

There was not one song i thought was a standout his voice is still great but man...... the album was just bad

So after this i picked up coming home I Call It Love is a sweet little song i like it & What You Are was a great track besides that the rest was very mediocre

I Also listened to part of Renaissance and wasn't impressed...

I Love his trilogy of albums in the 80's there incredible work i love them! and Lionel i had such high hopes for the rest of his cd's but... i have just been dissapointed.

Are any of his other albums i haven't mentioned even worth it?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Lionel sold his funky soul to the devil in 1978.

Yes he did! Everything from '74-'77 is stellar... After that, I didn't know who Lionel was. Sellout is probably the best term to describe what he did afterwards. Can't Slow Down was a great record though.

I thought that 'Louder Than Words' was a pretty solid album, but that was made in 1996, its pretty much all downhill after that. The next album 'Time' had a few gems, but again don't expect too much after that.

Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

'Can't Slow Down' was the last album that I liked by Lionel.

Man I loved everything about Lionel, even Post-Commodores. I think Lionel was just an artist waiting to burst out into his own right. Man, I'm wondering if we could put him up tthere with like the top 5 song writers of all time.

Member those rumors that he made the Commodores pay to go to one of his concerts. LOL had throw that oldie but goodie in there. Member when Lionel's wife "hemmed his azz up" and "he left her ass for a white girl".

Lionel's personality appears a bit cornball-ish to me, but he is unbelieably talented. Wonder why he's not still writing big time.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

'Dancing On The Celiing' is when I started to lose interest in Lionel. He became too "pop" with that album. The title track and its video is embarassing disbelief One of the WORST songs of the 80s! "Say You,Say Me" is schmaltzy 80s pop CRAP.

Lionel is a bad ass, and a true legend.

I love Dancing On The Ceiling, more than Can't Slow Down, but both have special places in my soul.

To SoulAlive: "Say You Say Me" was just a movie track. Hollywood loves schmaltzy, esp in the 80's. The real gem on DOTC is "Night Train (Smooth Alligator)".

Other loved ones:

Se La

Deep River Woman (with Alabama)

Agreed! It was cringe-inducing and dated from the moment it was released. A shame, because there are some other good songs on that album ("Se La", for instance)

What happened to Lionel Richie? I can answer that.

The year was 1985 and Lionel was having a fabulous year. So much so, he was tapped to host the American Music Awards.

He was having a GREAT night! He won:

Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist

Favorite Pop/Rock Male Video Artist

Favorite Pop/Rock Video - "Hello"

Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist

Favorite Soul/R&B Video - "Hello"

Favorite Soul/R&B Male Video Artist

Just when it looked to him and everybody watching that he was going to sweep the AMA's or at least lose out to the only thing that could possibly beat him, Michael Jackson's "Thriller", the unthinkable happened.

Favorite Soul/R&B Album - Prince - "Purple Rain"

Favorite Pop/Rock Album - Prince - "Purple Rain"

The astonished look of WTF???? on Lionel's face was totally P R I C E L E S S!!!! falloff

He ain't been right since! evillol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Are you serious?? Hello was a great song. I think folks are just still pissed that he left his r&b/ funk roots and went mainstream pop. Yeah under normal circumstances I'd be pissed too but he did some excellent songwriting after he left the group also. Hello was a beautiful song, and how could you not like that video of that blind lady with her white cane and Lionel yelling out to her "Helloooo...is it me you're looking forrrrr?". Yall some bitter Mickey Fickeys.

Lionel soared farther than he ever could had he kept doing the songs he was doing with the Commodores. Trust me I loved "Zoom" and "Father Help your Children" and the other good stuff like the rest of you...but still ...he can't be denied!

'Hello' - boring, yawn-inducing schmaltzy elevator music. Like Silverchild said - give me everything Lionel did '74-'77. smile

Lionel is all about making money.

Surprisingly, he's sold well with his crappy releases.

To me, I think Lionel has released some "good" stuff....even after Dancing on the Ceiling.

I really like "Time". It is an AC album. Not a lot of r&b per-se, but I do like it. A lot of the songs seem to be about the split with Brenda.

Chuckii Booker has been the musical-director on one of his latest tours. Not shure though if he also worked on studio-tracks for Lionel.
