I wish the director's cut/expanded edition gets released soon.
I remember watching the film on BET and it was NOT the same as the one in the DVD(who I think is severely edited).
Does anybody remember...
1. The Danny Devito scene?
2. The ending scene when Marsha got stood up by the blonde guy?
I know there're many scenes that were left off from the DVD, I can't remember the rest.
I remember Danny Devito. He and Brooke Adams had that food trailer which mysteriously disappeared from later versions of the movie. Also remember Marsha but I remember her with the fat guy. Remember Floyd and Lloyd dancing in the locker room? So much good stuff that I don't think I want to buy it unless it's complete. BTW, the guy that played Geronimo got killed by the police in Cali under some strange circumstances a few years later as I recall.
Yep,Ray Vitte was killed in 1983 by some cops in Los Angeles. He was a very talented actor. After 'Car Wash',he appeared on a few episodes of 'What's Happening!' and he was the DJ in 'Thank God It's Friday'.
Manki, the DVD contains the original version of the film that was shown in theatres back in 1976/77.
However, when they show this film on TV,there are ALOT of additional scenes. You'd be shocked at all the footage you never saw before! A young, unknown Danny Devito appears in it,with alot of scenes. His character owns a hamburger joint across the street from the car wash.He spends the entire film arguing with his girlfriend. He's the "jealous type" and they get into a huge argument.By the end of the movie, they kiss and make up.
I think the version they showed on swedish TV is not the same as the american TV.
Hope it's up for download somewhere:)
/peace Manki
In Sweden, they probably just showed the regular DVD version of the film.I hope you get the see the version with all the missing scenes.I think it was a huge mistake to edit out so many of these scenes!

That is sad to hear.
I remember him as the voice of NO-Reason in "Car Wash" to the guy who cheated on his wife, and I remember thinking to myself, "That is TOO handsome of a man to be looking so damn raggedy"
BTW I was waiting for you to tell us about the expanded version of the film. Thanx a plenty
Did you know that Clarence Muse(the old shoe shine guy) was a hollywood royalty? I read this book by Donald Bogle about black actors/actresses and the man's credentials are just impressive. He produced alot of independent black films and assisted many up & coming black talents in Hollywood at the time(Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis among many were under his wing at some of point of their career).
Such a keeper, this movie (and my cousin, who was a dj in LA at the time, is the AM radio voice in the movie! )! It always pissed me off, though, that sometimes when I saw it on tv, Antonio Fargas' part was somehow erased as if he wasn't even in the movie! Anyone else notice that?
Hell yeah. I kept thinking "some homophobes edit that shit". I didn't see what was so offensive about Antonio's part at all. He was brilliant in it!
He's got one of the best lines in the movie:
"I'm more man than you'll ever be,and more woman than you'll ever get"
I first saw this movie on Easter Sunday 1977 as part of a double feature with the Redd Foxx film 'Norman,Is That You?' Back in the day, double features were the norm.

I remember that Redd Foxx movie. I fact, around that time in Trinidad, The Mighty Sparrow, sang a song about that movie.
"Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

The Danny DeVito scenes were "cut" scenes that were added on television for time, when the more "adult" material had to be cut. I'm not sure if it was in the original print from 1976, but this is how I was told about it. It's definitely not on the newer issued dvd of Car Wash either. That Marsha chick should be lucky she even got a date; she was no Suzanne Somers.
Katie Kinisky: "So What Are The Latest Dances, Nell?"
Nell Carter: "Anything The Black Folks did Last Year"

And I LOVE Floyd and Lloyd..."and we're the FUTURISTICS"
"Nah, na na nah, nah. I don't know what I did wrong....!!" Too funny.

For so many years,I was confused about the "missing scenes".I remember seeing the film in theatres back in 1977,but when they show it on TV,there are alot of scenes that weren't in the original film If you have the DVD,you have the original theatrical version, but it's missing ALOT of scenes, like this one...
In the "TV version" ,we find out that Marsha's "date" played a cruel trick on her. This heartbreaking scene was NOT in the original theatrical version.
Melanie Mayron(Marsha) lost a lot of weight by the time she did 'thirtysomething'. I didn't even recognize her as the chick from Car Wash.
my mom used to go to the car wash where this movie was film since it was only about 2 miles from our apartment at the time. it's now a mini-mall!
i loved the pointer sisters song, as well as 'i want to get next to you'. reminds me of that time in my life. off topic: the follow up rose royce album had 'wishing on a star', 'ooh boy', and 'do you dance' on it. i begged my aunt to get that album for me, since had neglected to pay me for babysitting my little cousin.
I was tryin' to get here before SoulAlive and tease him because I know he has the Beta, VHS, DVD, vinly LP, cassatte tape, and CD versions of this movie/soundtrack. I think someone is like me, they watch "Car Wash" once a month.
Yeah, when they aired "Car Wash" on TV they sliced and diced the hell out of it.

He was going to be one of my avatars before I got my present one but I couldn't find any decent pictures of him.

That scene has one of the best music cues I've ever heard. So beautiful, considering the unfortunate outcome of the double date surprise. Plus it was used earlier when Mr Wonderful came into the cafe.
What an a-hole, that guy.
And speaking of the cafe, let's show some love to the bald cook whose head got frequently "buttered".

Melanie was on Arsenio's show (back then) and she said she was on the pill when she was in Car Wash. When they showed a photo still of her (from the movie) everyone in the audience gasped.
Yeah she did look different.
She also said she lost her virginity to one of the cast members in the movie. Arsenio tried to pry it
out of her but she wouldn't say.

Dag, I guess Melanie just told all her business...well, most of it anyway!
I thought that guy, Henry Kingi and Lindsay Wagner divorced years ago. Not important though.
