Dag....I forgot all about Remy Shand. I liked him. Somehow he's gone and his style of singing has been replaced by Robin Thicke.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Im surprised that John Mayer isnt down on this list, probably because of his whole nonsense, but he totally was in that mix, and "accepted".

As for SOUL, once again i feel its an emotion you have, you cant get it from singing lessons, you can sound "SOULFUL" but its different than being a "soulful singer" a huge difference, alot of these cats and ladies "sound soulful".

Pluck John Mayer...and that's really with an "F" and not a "P" and drop the "L". He has a great musical style where you can definitely hear "black influence" in his music, but his voice isn't necessarily all that soulful in my opinion, that soul sound comes moreso from his background singers.

These guys from Scotland, who now can touch them? Is there something in the water that is sapping the talent from everyone these days? Where is the "Average White Band" of today?

They're still around performing, and have a good following of fans.

Funny that you say that, because both their 1st albums came out around the same time. Remy was getting more exposure and selling more, and people thought Robin was underrated.

LOL. I can only really speak for his voice on that one song that I really liked from him "Take a Message". But after thinking about it, I can understand why you feel that way. I also liked the music behind him. Sounds like the band memebers of Sade influenced his music. I guess the true test to hear how strong his voice really is would be to see him live. I've never seen a live performance.

Oh I saw him live back in 2002, and you did not miss a thang. He was not good at all, which was really disappointing. He obviously needed to rehearse more, or something. "At least we have the cd," that is what I went away saying after the show. lol

I can't believe no one mentioned "Jonny Lang" who is like a Michael McDonald Clone. As a matter of fact I believe MM sings in this song with Jonny.

Thankful - Jonny Lang w/Michael McDonald

Red Light - Jonny Lang

[Edited 6/25/10 17:25pm]

I never heard of this guy before....."blue eyed soul" no doubt. I like that choir in the background of "Thankful". I like him.

His voice is amazing. As soon as I heard him sing "Thankful" I was taken aback. He has that bluesy/gospel voice just like Michael McDonald, that comes naturally. I love the track "Turn Around"; he takes you to church for real on that one. I was doing the soul clap when I listened to that song.lol Jonny sings some songs that could move and touch the soul. Not everyone can do that. His singing also reminds me a little bit of Al Green.

If I were some A&R person I would snatch that "Jessie J" girl up so fast. She can really sing. Not sure why we haven't heard from her yet.

She wrote Miley Cyrus' Party in the USA which is funny because she's actually from Essex.

Her myspace says that she wrote songs for Mary J Blige, Missy, and Flo-rida too.

Anyways, this is another one that I like. He isn't signed yet.

This girl is very good. I prefer this version to Christina's.

Another talented girl

Tynisha was in the Fame remake. She's like another JoJo.

One more Mike Hough video. His album is coming out soon in the UK. This rendition is very soulful like Jazmine's.

I think that Celine Dion is a fantastic and amazing singer, but by no means should she be linked to singing "soul music" or bought into the catagory of being a "blue eyed soul" singer. That's just my opinion. biggrin Almost none of her songs are soulful. She has soul "riffs" in some songs, but those songs are not soulful ballads, they are popular music ballads.

I just think that some posts on this thread are of singers who can sing and have great voices, but they are not soulful singers. biggrin

Yanno Whitney did not record soul music. But she could definitely sing soul music. I can't think of the name of this song that she tore up. Also if you listen to some of her gospel tracks, the soul is right there. You had to hear her do something live, or impromptu. But Whitney was definitely capable.

Soul Music was birthed out of "negro spirituals" and gospel music. Those church folks left the church and sang with the same intensity and self-reflection but sang secular tunes and this is what we refer to as soul music. So that's why we can link gospel singers to being soul singers even if they in fact are not singing secular selections. Now if Mahalia was singing a secular tune as she is singing this spirtual / gospel tune, she would be labled a soul singer. If Mahalia was white, and she was singing a secular tune as she is singing this tune we would call her a blue eyed soul music singer. biggrin

You know I think that term "blue eyed soul" is real disrespectful. Soul music is soul music no matter what your color is. Yeah there's inclination that black folks "created" it but how can you create something that's from within?

Because black people tapped into that self-reflective and emotional style of singing long before anyone else thought to do it. It was a product of "the struggle". A product of Negro Spirituals (seriously). There would naturally be admirers of the art form (as with any art form), and non black people began to tap into that style of singing. It just didn't naturally "come from within" from everybody at the same time.

Some artists don't particularly care for that classification. Some arists appear to be honored. This "term" really became a "classification" term back in the 1970's to classify white artists who sang soul music. I'm not sure that this title / term was necessarily used in the mainstream, but certain radio disc jockeys on black radio would use this as a classifcation term.

I have not heard any present day artists really seriously being referred to as "blue eyed soul" artists in the mainstream. I think that the particular term was just relevant to it's era.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

time (clock of the heart) and higher love are some of the best songs I have heard in my life

when I discovered higher love, that song followed me around for awhile too in random places, there's something so comforting and spiritual about it too.

Daryl Hall, Joss Stone, Tina Novak, Nick Scotti, Anastasia, righteous brothers and the great Grayson Hugh below talk about a classic Sam Cooke voice or what.
