And yet they hate the term "blue-eyed soul". lol

I cant really blame them, its almost like saying White Boys trying to be black, when we all know (especially with what is "soul" today) black has nothing to do with soul. Annie Lennox is a soul singer, whitney houston is not.

eek Methinks you don't listen to Whitney, and most certainly have never seen The Preacher's Wife.

Remember Jane Child? This song had multiple versions, from rock to pop, to kinda a "New Jack Swing" sound. I liked this version... it was like they put out so many versions of the song to see which one would stick. I liked this version the New Jack Swing one. I loved this song.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

This is the best Tina Marie song ever in my opinion. And she is a real musician. When this woman was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown, Rick James selfishly broke her out of the hospital to record Fire and Desire, and then returned her back to the looney bin after she laid down her tracks. She did it in ONE TAKE! Anytime you can record your part to a song like Fire and Desire so perfectly while you are SICK in ONE TAKE then you are truly head and shoulders above everyone else.

& this girl can do Teena Marie better than Teena herself can. She's not signed though to my knowledge.

If I were some A&R person I would snatch that "Jessie J" girl up so fast. She can really sing. Not sure why we haven't heard from her yet.

The thing that I don't like about Joss Stone's voice is that it does not sound genuine. It sounds fake. It sounds like she's trying to sound soulful. She definitely can sing no doubt about it, but I question the authenticity of her voice. She seems like someone who could "flip flop" if the price was right and would be singing rock in a heartbeat. Remember "Pink" was initially promoted as an R&B singer. She did a darn good job at it too. I guess that I can respect that Pink was at least honest with herself and realized that she didn't wanna do that music anymore, so now she's more pop/rockish. So I guess I'm saying that Joss can potentially "make a move" at any point, as far as I'm concerned.

A few more singers who haven't been mentioned yet are Conner Reeves, Jon B, James Morrison, Dusty Springfield and also IMO, Michael Sembello has a soulful voice too.

Eric Tagg sang lead on Lee Ritenour's "Is It You" around 1981 :

Eric released the year after a great solo-album exclusively in Japan ,

a collabo-project with also Lee, and which has been on Japanese cd-import sometime ago :

Yeah, and his sister(?)/wife(?) Cruz has also been hired as session-singer through the years.

Cruz takes the 2nd verse on "Talk" :

Check them as well singing on the songtrack "Back Again", also from David Sanborn's album "As We Speak" (1982-Warner Brothers)

I really liked Jon B....not sure what happened to him. I think there was a bit of a problem with his "image". They tried to make him look a lil too ethnic. Hey just be White and do your thing, because when you start changing images, people can see through that and will start to think you are trying to be something that you are not.

Which is why I love Robin Thicke. James Bond kinda image, not trying to "look black", but sounding very soulful and damned good.

Good thread!

Any thoughts as to why it seems that non-Americans -- particularly Brits -- are able to master that soulful sound more often than Americans?

It looks like most of these artists are English.

And I can't believe no one's mentioned Tom Jones! wink razz

That's so true. It seems like white British artists do great soul music. Well with the exception of Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs (both being American), and I'm not sure if Bobby Caldwell is British or not- heck I just found out that he was white and I've been singing his song at Karaoke for years.

I gotta give it up to Scritti Politti. Producer David Gamson is a master at vivid keyboard arrangements. Funky, bright, and glowing with pop sensibilities.

Provision is a current cd changer favorite, but Cupid and Psyche is a rare gem.
