Meshell Ndegeocello: BBC interview with music And for the Prince nuts out there, she talks about "For You" and gets Benji to play the title track, which she introduces after it plays.
Benji plays a lot of music from throughout her career and she talks a lot about all of the different time periods.

I'm still listening 2 this and I'm loving this so far! I'm surprised about her comments about Prince though. She's always expressed a deep admiration for him as a musician and not 2 many people know that "Emale" is based on a jam session he and Meshell had in New York (she's who he referring 2 when he says "Thanx Shiva" in the Emancipation cd liner notes). But she said that she's met him on a few occasions and he's really not that nice a person, and that's why it's sometimes best not 2 meet your heroes. She stated that she asked him 2 play a guitar solo on the song "Trust" from her Cookie:the Anthropological Mixtape album and he refused 2 do it and "then he called me something that's not even worth repeating" and that's when she knew that his ego was out in the stratosphere. Of course this is just her version of a 2 sided story but I was shocked that she even put that out there. Still she maintains her awe of him as musician.

I agree. What could P have possible said that is not worth repeating? Its sad to find out that your heros are actually shitty people. I can identify with that.... Bummer.... He told her she was something to the effect of a 'house nigga' for continuing to release her album on MAverick (Madonna's subsidary) under Warner Brothers. Also that asking him to play on that song was like asking him to return to the plantation.

Prince was such a prick during his "slave" days

SoulAlive said: Prince was such a prick during his "slave" days His "slave" days ended several years before Meshell was finishing "Cookie," which was finally released by Maverick/WB in 2002. Her last album with Maverick/WB was in 2003. They both have been "free" at the same time for the last 7 years. I imagine they will work together in some form or another someday. Basically it is up to Prince at this point. I am not worried about it any longer. I used to dream about such a collaboration, but Meshell consistently surrounds herself with top shelf musicians and create critically acclaimed records. She doesn't need anyone else than who she currently has at any given time to continue to create great music... in my opinion

Meshell consistently puts out great music that pushes the envelope, I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of her music. I too would love to see them collaborate, she could open worlds for him. Alas, he seems to be mired in ever more rigid dogma for such a collaboration to succeed. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."
