I have a hard time imagining those on the radio, maybe it's just cause I'm used to her not having hits anymore. Discipline is my least favorite of her albums, not counting the ones before Control. I haven't listened to the radio in 9 years, so I'm probably not the best judge. That being said, I'm sure there's some XM channel that would play them. Really? I think those songs would've flopped Especially, STWU.

I loved pretty much everything that was on the radio from 1997 til 2002. Once Lil John came out with "Get Low" I was gone forever.

A few reasons:
1. The video release was poorly timed - literally months after it was sent to radio.
2. By this time, Virgin was getting really sloppy. There was no commercial single for this, while the Someone To Call My Lover single was not released to coincide with its radio peak (hence its #3 peak on the Hot 100 - it would have been an easy #1 otherwise).
3. This was simply too Urban and had zero Pop appeal. She'd focused her efforts squarely on Top 40 for some time, so this was a curious choice to say the least. It peaked at #22 at Top 40 radio, whereas All For You was a #1 hit there and Someone To Call My Lover went to #3.
Her increasing focus on the Top 40 format at a time when her age was beginning to guarantee her decline at that very format helped to hasten her banishment from Top 40 after the SuperBowl. She had ignored the Urban and Urban A/C formats - which had been core formats for her - since the late 90's. Those formats are much more forgiving to female artists approaching 40.

They played part of "Someone to Call My Lover" on the second episode of Neighbors from Hell, a show you should be watching.

Love this song and video but if I had to guess why it flopped, I'd say the verses being almost inaudible would make most pop listeners turn off, it wouldn't hold their attention til the chorus.
Or maybe it didn't get enough promo?
LOL just listening to the Missy remix now: "You musta thought you had game like Tiger Woods".

Feels So Right seems to have caught on in "hustle circles" with black DJs without it being a single (at least in Detroit). i've heard it often when DJs are in a groovy mood and ppl are "ballrooming"
i thought Trust a Try with a killer video could've been the "black cat" from AFY

I agree about Discipline, her best album since...janet. maybe? And then it gets virtually NO label support at all. It could have, and should have, been huge.

The best is yet to come | |

"My Baby" should have been big. Kanye was just blowing up at the time and it could have been big. "Spending Time With U" would not have been big, but I think it would have gotten a lot of air play on quiet storm shows.

I liked the Discipline album. All For You and Janet are actually the ones I rarely listen to. I listen to Janet Jackson all the time. It's now my favorite Janet album "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Discipline is ok but not good, imo. and at that last part.

Discipline ain't even her best album since All For You. To say it is better than The Velvet Rope is an offense punishable by death.

No, I actually enjoy her debut unlike many of her fans. I would rather listen to it than Discipline, TBH. But favorite album by Janet? Come on now

I love Janet and I like this song, am still still slightly disappointed (and slightly angry ) that this wasn't the hit I thought it would be.

It's definitely her best since All for You. I'd say Discipline and The Velvet Rope are about even. I've always considered the former slightly overrated. Both are probably too long.
FWIW, I love her debut. It's a great album with no bad tracks. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Even to The Velvet Rope?
Discipline IS her worst album ever. Far worse than 40 Y.O.

Son Of A Gun was my favorite single from that album! I'm certain it's because Janet is typically fiercly private, I'm nosy and she went there.
I remember hearing the lyrics and having to call my sister (Janet's honest to goodness #1 fan) late at night and having to talk to her about it. I couldn't believe that Janet put Rene on blast like that, but my sister wasn't surprised. She'd been trying to tell me that Janet and Rene were married for ages. I wasn't buying it though, choosing to instead believe Janet and her "oh, we're just friends" mumbo jumbo.
With all of the leaked info. I'm surprised it wasn't a mega hit!

Rhythm Nation 1814 is clearly her best album and Control is clearly second. They're both phenomenal albums that sound just as fresh now as when they were released. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
