Michael Hampton playing Maggot Brain instead of Eddie Hazel.why? WHen you listen to studio masterpiece of Eddie Hazel Maggotbrain and you want to hear some live rendation on youtube you are in a problem. There is not a single version of original player it's either Kidd Funkadelic playing or Kid Funkadelic playing most of the MaggotBrain and Eddie Hazel playing just a bit and almoust unaudiable compared to loud guitar by Mike Humpton. Why did Mike played the song when Eddie Hazel was on stage? Disrespect to Eddie Hazel?

I doubt it was disrespect. There was one performance I saw of them both on there doing it, Eddie doing it first, then Michael coming it halfway and then the both performed together. The performance looked as if Eddie was passing the torch to Michael. I think it was that 1983 performance. No I don't think it was disrespect to Eddie to be honest with you.

"The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

Eddie (like Jimi) played by how he felt. I've heard versions of "Maggot Brain" where Mike and Byrd take the leads and Eddie is just playing chordal strums in the background.
I think Eddie enjoyed playing rhythm guitar and sometimes may not have wanted the spotlight. That's the sign of a true musician.

Exactly. It seemed like he was just happy to be there.

So Eddie Hazel enjoyed when he soloed on lower volume and Mike Hmpton was shredding all over Eddie instead of letting Eddie shine? There must have been some bad blood in Funkadelic guitar camp

Well the only folks who would know that are the members of Funkadelic and George Clinton. So far I haven't heard of bad blood between band mates. The infighting seemed to be with George and them rather than each other.

Well keep in mind that Eddie probably had his nights when he had the "gunblazer" attitude and I'm sure there were nights when he was laid back and really didn't care.
Someone that I know who was in P-Funk (in the glory years) told me that all of them had their nights when they wanted to wail and didn't. There's a clip online of Eddie kicking Mike's ass and there's clips of Mike having a volume contest with Eddie..It gets to a point where Eddie says "fuck this" and walks off.
I think the "competition" in the P-Funk Guitar Army was cool and it kept them at their best. But they all knew their roles. Eddie was the O.G with the gospel funk rock and everyone else followed.
Mike - blues rock and in later years dabbled w/ metal in his style.
Byrd - hyper jazz fusion with a little metal.
Garry - clean R&B and soul..straight thru the amp style with little or no effects/gain.
Glen - pretty similar to Garry's style.
..even the new guy (Ricky Rouse) wails on the guitar. Very Jimi influenced in his gear, style, and showmanship. A perfect addition.
All of these cats are my guitar heroes. Now let's see if the guitar mags say anything about Garry's passing.
