Some interesting posts on the issues Artists face when going the DIY route.
It's very understandable why Prince is using his methods which are working in his favor without him losing money on each release.

this paragraph stood out to me...
the other thing that should be noted here is that while this is not her best album - - but its better than the much of the critical reception it is getting - - it would have been diminished by anything a big name producer could have brought to the project. i prefer her with lusher more complicated orchestration. but this is a stark album. her instincts were right (both creatively and financially) to keep the production values exactly the way they are.
