You all sound like rabid dogs. Her producers just used Thriller as an example of what she wants. Basically an album full of memorable hits which I doubt will happen. Rihanna is forgettable.
Rhianna will get a personality before she gets an album of classic hits "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world." |

I don't know why I'm hating so hard because the song that made me say 'OK I'm copping GGGB' was "Don't Stop The Music" with the WBSS hook.
It bugs me too when rappers say their album will be like Illmatic, including when Nas says it.
That reminds me when Lupe said his first album was inspired by "It Was Written" . I like Illmatic, and I really can't stand when people mention that album all the time, and I'm like 'Hello, this muthafucka has been out for like 16 years and had many albums AFTERWARDS'. Damn, those people be acting like this man is a damn one-hit wonder. BTW, Stillmatic was a sequel, so people really need to shut the fuck up about Nas having another Illmatic. Nas, himself said he was tired of people telling him to make another Illmatic.
I thought Streets Disciple was his best album in my opinion. I did not feel Illmatic that much. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records. |

for me, Illmatic represents all the flaws and misconceptions of mid-90s rap...I hate Ready to Die and All Eyez on Me as well... |

If you had said It Was Written I could co-sign, but Illmatic is basically definitive of the last great golden era hip hop album. Illmatic is in itself flawless. |

Unfortunately, you are probably right. That's because those that think this type if music is good will lap it up and buy millions of copies. I'm sure there will be a catchy song or two, but I know I won't be spending my money on sub-par music such as this latest pop queen has to offer. |

Fucking Fail.
I was just gonna say, she got to sing a little better if she's going to vaguely go for the 'Thriller' level but i see there's a fair bit more missing all round. |

Some level of homage is inescapable, but it's always sad to see the lack of confidence in the contemporary aesthetic or the possibilities that reside in it. It's almost like not even today's artists believe that inspiration flows freely anymore... so they actively execute and ask us to assess their work in the shadow of older stuff, sometimes blatantly copying it.
Thriller was great. But why not shoot for the higher ideal of making an album that's great in itself? [Edited 6/19/10 5:46am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

If she ever makes any attempt at something "Thriller inspired", it will be watered-down Thriller fashion, make-up, and video concept. Something visual. Nothing musical. Don't forget, Rihanna's in the industry make a comeback, it's always mostly about selling eye-candy and somehow, a different one from the last time. The same ol' "getting mature/rediscovering.reinventing myself" thang |
