Having focused on George Clinton so thoroughly through the years, only in recent weeks have I realized that PARLIAMENT was really Garry's band! And that's why it'll never be the same without HIM. That being said; I hope George Clinton is around for a long time yet to come, as he remains the Overlord of All Thangz Funky.

P-Funk opens the show with what at first appears to be a sloppy version of "Cosmic Slop." Garry Shider's mic is barely audible, the Capitol Centre was having electrical problems, and Michael Hampton's solo on the backside of the song was cut short because one of his tubes died. But when things are down is when P-Funk is seemingly at its best, with Garry coming through with a rare and impressive improvised solo (filling in for Michael) that turns what could have been a bad start into a great and unique version of "Cosmic Slop."

The Kidd would NEED to step up, but I don't have much faith that he will. In my opinion, he's been acting sort of like a Guitar Diva(o) in recent years, like he's in his own little world. I think RonKat Spearman will be the one stepping in for Garry's parts. It's one of the things I'll be looking for next month when I go see them.

U.S. Music with Funkadelic,

then,

Fitting cool

Obviously focusing on Garry's first appearances with the mob on record. Funkadelic wise.

I agree w/ you PDogz about the "Guitar Diva" thing with Mike. It seems in the last few years he's been on auto pilot. I don't know if he's bittter or angry. Still love the dude though.

R.I.P Garry.

That's what I've picked up on also; he seems bitter AND angry.

During a show a couple of years ago, I was up front just left of center stage and I could see Mike standing off in the wings messing around with some equipment. When I go to concerts, I like to check out all the technical aspects of what's going on, like watching them at the sound board, or whatever. So when I saw Mike off in the shadows, I was just watching him mess around with his stuff, when he whipped his head around real quick and saw me watching him. Dude cut me the dirtiest look imaginable, lol. Like "what the fuck are you looking at". And it really threw me off because I was like "...dude, you're one of my hero's!".

Another time, right while the show was going on, Mike was up on stage posing for pictures with a guitar that wasn't even plugged in, then I saw him pass the guitar to some guy near the front of the stage. He was selling his guitar and taking a picture for the guy with the guitar in his hand on stage, I guess to increase the value of the guitar. But I was thinking "Man, this guy is up there on stage, not even playing, and selling his own stuff?!?".

Then now, there's absolutely NO MENTION of Garry on any of Mike's social network sites. Not that that means anything but, DAMN! How far back do these two guys go, and Mike makes NO MENTION of his passing?!? (...realizing I'm only on the outside looking in). But on that same note, neither have I heard word from Bernie Worrell or Bootsy on the matter either. Again; just as an outsider, it would appear to me that there may have been some bad-blood between Garry & some of the other members.

Then my last "Mike" pet-peeve: One of the highlights of every P-Funk concert is when Mike finally does come to the stage at about the halfway point of the show to play "Maggot Brain", dude always takes FOREVER to tune his guitar, false start about 3 or 4 times, and generally acts like he had no idea he was supposed to come out and play "Maggot Brain" at that time, lol. I mean dayum, he's only played that song like a hundred million times, you'd think he'd be prepared to play it when it was time to, lol.

So yeah, Mike Hampton has seemed bitter AND angry to me for a while. But he's still one of my Super Funky Hero's, but I don't see him stepping up in Garry's absence.

I agree. This kinda shit it SOP for Mike (heard many stories & seen it myself several times live....esp the back to the audience thang).

I just think he came in post-Eddie & maybe felt like he was always in his shadow (esp only REALLY being the "featured player" on one mad track.

NOT true of Garry. He was ALWAYS front & center tryin to take the funk to the highest. You could just "feel" his spirit, dedication & love for the material, genre & craft.

I don't think Garry EVER disrespected fans or gave less than 100% at ANY show he played on. Mike is a GREAT player (skill wise) but he'll never be Garry's equal for sheer effort & "givin the money's worth" on every show.

Maybe Garry's passing will bring him to a new sense of appreciation for the legacy that he himself has played a significant role.

Here's to HOPE for the future of the P. headbang

THAT too! It's like he's there just for a paycheck (and knowing George; a minimal one at that, lol). It's like Mike agreed to be on stage to make the music, but doesn't want anyone LOOKING at him, lol. Maybe he's angry and self-conscious about all the weight he's put on over the years, lol. But to me, he'll always be that young kid with the fluffy sombrero wrapped in Cookie Monster fur, lol.

And I agree, Garry NEVER gave you ANY of that attitude. He was there to spread The Funk, and you could see he loved doing it, and loved the people he performed for (...and WE loved him back).

Losing Garry for me is like losing Eddie all over again. His guitar playing and vocals will be painfully missed just as much as his energy and his smile. We are all blessed to have music, videos and for myself, memories. Fly On, Starchild, Fly On......\m/

PDogz I remember one time they came thru my area back in the late 80's and a buddy of mine (who happens to be a diehard) went to the early soundcheck. He met everyone (including George) and said everyone was cool and gracious.

He said he got to Mike and before he met him he was complaing about the tour, the music and

having to constanly "bring the funk". He was saying that he was sick of it and wanted to put

together a rock group (ala Van Halen) and do something new. He the said someone brought a

copy of "Tales" (autographed) and wanted Mike's signature to complete it.

Mike then looked at that guy, lashed out at him and told to get the "f" out of his face with it. The

guy literally begged him and told him he could sign it "KF" and not put his real name on it. He still

refused. I remember one of the Guitar Player mags had a interview with all of them and Mike was

real angry and refused to give up any info on what he used since no one would give him an endorsment.

I think Mike, Blackbyrd and Billy Bass were endorsed by Washburn by that time so what was up with that? I understand we all have bad days but maybe he's angry that he never got the props

that Eddie (or other famous guiarists) get? I also use to feel bad for him in the past because everytime they would launch into the "Cosmic Slop" intro his guitar would cut out. It would happen on other tunes too.

Garry (from what I read in a interview) didn't have a real endorsement and played on a lot of

owned or borrowed gear and seemed real happy and content with it. I remember he asked readers to send him a guitar (and a bag of pork rinds) because he didn't have his own guitar.

The last time I saw the group Mike was in real good spirits and was playing LTD's.

Wow. So you know what? 100 Indians can't be wrong, lol. I know the vibe I got from him, and now I'm hearing all this from you, lol. Dayum Mike! LOL. I know that look he gave me was unmistakable, lol. I don't know how I could even still like the guy, but i do, lol.
