"Boogie Nights"----the music in this film

Am I the only one who REALLY,REALLY loves the music in this film, and the way it was used? Those of you who have seen this film know exactly what I'm talking about. The film takes place from 1977-1983,the golden era in pop music, imo. The director did a splendid job incorporating these tunes into the various scenes.

Remember the spine-tingling scene where Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" is playing on someone's stereo?

Remember the hot tub scene where The Ohio Player's "I Want To Be Free" is playing in the background?

Or,the memorable scene at the end where ELO's "Living Thing" is playing? wink

Another great thing about the song selection is,there are many lesser known songs that were used.Sure, the big hits are there ("Best Of My Love" by The Emotions..."Ain't No Stoppin Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead, etc),but it was fun hearing these forgotten gems too...

"Driver's Seat" by Sniff N' The Tears (1979)
"Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold (1977)(a guilty pleasure of mine...lol)
"Jungle Fever" by Chakachas (1972)

Everytime I watch this movie (which is quite frequently),I always just sit back and enjoy the wonderful,non-stop soundtrack.I can't think of another recent movie where the songs are used in such an effective manner.

Oddly enough, the song "Boogie Nights" by Heatwave (1977) is nowhere to be found in this film!

Oddly enough I haven't seen this film. Keep saying I'm going to rent it{pity and a shame I know},but haven't gotten around to it. I'll try to get it this weekend. I remember liking the previews and the movie got rave reviews.

Man I LOVEEE this song and always have..I thank god for P.T. Anderson for having a great music memory-sense like Tarantino. I also like how he used Fooled Around And Fell In Love.

One of the only ones I can think of is Jackie Brown (Strawberry letter #23-Across 110th St-Natural High), Pulp Fiction ( take your pic) and Spike Lee's Summer of Sam. I love directors who know how to use music in their movies..they know which songs get that "feel" etc and they are fans of the music.

"I've got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new key... " Perfect 4 "Roller Girl" (portrayed by Heather Graham) lol

Here's the whole soundtrack list:

1. "Intro (Feel The Heat)" by John C. Reilly & Mark Wahlberg
2. "Best Of My Love" by The Emotions
3. "Jungle Fever" by Chakachas
4. "Brand New Key" by Melanie
5. "Spill The Wine" by War with Eric Burdon
6. "Got To Give It Up (part 1)" by Marvin Gaye
7. "Machine Gun" by The Commodores
8. "Magnet & Steel" by Walter Egan
9. "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" by McFadden & Whitehead
10. "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger
11. "Livin' Thing" by ELO
12. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys
13. "The Big Top (Theme From Boogie Nights)" by Michael Penn & Patrick Warren

I love how the director used this music, I love director's in general who have a genuine respect 4 the music in their movies, not picked 4 quick airplay or filler... Paul Thomas Anderson directed "Boogie Nights".

Other director's who effectively use music 4 their films are:

Quentin Tarantino
Spike Lee
Cameron Crowe
Robert Rodriguez

(I'll think of more, later)

(Boogie over this edit! mad )

This is a great movie...

"Spill the Wine" is a classic!

What about the songs that Dirk recorded? I'm pretty sure they're on the soundtrack.

I love this movie, esp the performances (no joking) of the entire cast is great ( Julianne Moore & Heather Graham sexy) it made me "understand" and appreciate the disco culture that I used to hate at 100%
David it seems that the the relations between black & white people in the 70s were in the good way before the Reagan era... no?
+ musical?: what is the song's name after the great dance scene, where Mark Walhberg explains to Burt Reynold his new character? (it sounds like Toto or Eagles.....)

the film works far better with the music because unlike Charlie's Angels or Forrest Gump that just play songs as the film goes on for old times sake these songs truly fit here.Burt Reynolds gives a Great Performance.just His role alone makes this a Must see.

Boogie Nights is also one of my favs. It is also one of the funniest movies I have ever seen in a some-what understated way. The part where burt reynolds is editing the trailer of his cop/sex flick is classic. We see this corny ass trailer only to have it cut away to show burt reynolds saying "This is the best work we've ever done " lol Or the part where Marky Mark flips out and tells Burt "You're not the king of me, you're not the boss of me!" That whole movie is classic. I need to pick it up on DVD for sure.

One of my all time favourite films. Probably in my Top 3 of the 90s with Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction.

You've just gotta download Mark Wahlberg's verison of "The Touch". Hilarious biggrin

OMG! When they are in the studio cutting their album that shit is so funny! My boy has the soundtrack to the movie and one day at a BBQ had his cd player on random play. It just happend to hit track thats a 30 second snip of Marky Mark and his boy in the studio. "Feel, feel, feel... feel the heat." Everyone stopped and was like "what they hell is that" lol

Well the signing he did in Boogie Nights was supposed to be bad. He did a damn good job and being that bad too lol. Thats the whole theme of boogie nights really. These people that think they are deep and talented are really 180 degrees from what they think they are. Good example of this is where Dirk Diggler is giving the interview about how history repeats itself, just like "Napoleon when he was conquered by the Roman empire" lol

I love that because it shows how people acted in that era--saying those things like "you're not the boss of me" is exactly what someone would have said in that era etc. Bravo P.T.

you can't forget Don Cheadle. I love that man's performances on everything he's ever done. That whole robbery scene (in the donut shop?) and him dressed as a cowboy... encapsulated the whole tragedy, drama, and humor of their lives.
