Snippet of unreleased 2004 Janet track "Ruff" leaked

The Neptunes-produced track was supposed to be on "Damita Jo."

Shit's fuckin' tight! They really fucked up the Damita Jo album. Firstly, who even calls her that, and secondly, had they entitled it, "Ruff" and used THIS as the first single, she would have sold at least 3 million. I often question the skillsets of those in the industry who compile hits collections and/or select/promote tracks for artists' upcoming releases. It's perplexing as to exactly what they're hearing that fans are not. Bizarre. Peace.

1,2,3..

Ok no I would have went with "R&B Junkie" and "I Want You" as the first singles; Damita Jo is her middle name. Last; I can see this song is produced by the Neptunes and ..while it is a nice b-side possibility I don't know if it had single quality.

It's possibly a good fifth single but more likely would have been just a good addition to the album while axing the listless "My Baby" (terrible nothing song). Yeah, they totally screwed up this album. They should have played up the dance pop angle, which was really working on this album and downplayed the sappy R&B. I also thought right away the album was going to get lost because of the name (that being said, it was the least of it's problems). It's a much better album then the last two and deserved better.

"All Nite"
"Slo Love"
"Put Your Hands On" (WHY THIS WASN'T ON THE ALBUM....I don't get it)
"Just A Little While"

"I Want You" was so "meh".

my sister who doesn't listen to janet type of music though she loves all of michael's work, thinks that if all nite don't stop was the first single, no one would have given a shit about superbowl cause it was that tight

I'm not feeling this ruff though, sounds like filler.

Agreed about All Nite. That song is one of her best dance tracks ever. But I really do like the way Ruff is sounding. It would've gone perfectly right after All Nite on the album.

yeah that flow would have worked, but I don't think ruff would have made a strong single. I remember one of my friends hearing I'm Here on a random mixtape too she got at some party and thought that song was so good and I had to tell her it was an album cut that was only released in japan but was glad she heard it.

"Put Your Hands On" was released on the Japanese edition, so it's out there, and easy to find online.

Also on the Japan edition was "I'm Here", which was co-written by Cathy Dennis.

I believe "Just A Little While" was a boo boo when it was released, literally. It was being played by radio stations when "I Want You" was initially being pushed to radio stations (or vice versa). I remember hearing both on the radio, almost back to back. However, they had proper releases on Feb 2nd, and March 5th (respectively).

"All Nite" was the clear lead single, and "R&B Junkie" should have followed it almost immediately. They should have tied the two videos together (the way Madonna did with "Sorry", and "Jump". But being the 3rd and 4th singles, they died a slow death. The Super Bowl nonsense didn't help it either, especially when fucking Laura Bush started talking on a plane about how "we don't like that" sort of thing in America. As if she's never flopped out a fun bag for ol' Georgie.

There's a few less-than stellar tracks on the album, but overall, Damita Jo was a great effort.

I thought I had "Ruff" already, which is why I'm confused with the "snippet". But maybe not.

Right. I remember hearing R&B Junkie in the movie theaters ALOT because they used to play the "radio hits" before the previews came on at that time in Minneapolis. However it never got released as a video and I think it could have done more than All Night did in my opinion.

That is a classic idea about having All Nite and RnB Junkie videos lead from one to the other. And definately, All Nite should have been the first single without a doubt. It would have skyrocketed to the top, particularly if not for the SB.

can't put my finger on where i've heard elements of Ruff from. its chopped up pretty nicely but its definitely derivative. i don't like how low and muffled her vocals are though. ditto on the stuff said about the poor decisions for Damita Jo, i think they were banking on Kanye's name and then hotness to propel I Want You, i'm not sure what should have followed AFTER, but All Nite was definitely the "first listen" hit off the album

It's understandable why this wasn't included. This is the same EXACT beat as Noreaga's 'What What.'

Layzie you killin it in here. That's two in a row.

As far as Damita Jo goes, I remember Dallas Austin saying (pre-SB) that they had recorded even more raw sexual stuff for the record. He said that their direction for their records was influenced by Prince's "Dirty Mind." They were listening to alot of that.

Ruff no doubt was pulled due to the SB. Virgin probably had to scramble and try to pick the more tame stuff. Considering "Warmth" still made it on there, could you imagine the stuff that didn't make the cut? It was probably aural porn smile

What??? lol I don't remember him saying that. All I know is that Damita Jo was a totally different album before SB and it was supposed to be more experimental but her label at thet the time scrapped everything because of the SB. I really want to listen to the Damita Jo album before SB happened. I bet its hott!!!!

Here's is old article where Dallas makes a quick reference to Dirty Mind. I think it must have been another article in a local paper in Atlanta where he talked more about his experience helping produce Damita Jo. I too would love to hear their original vision for the record. Maybe one day we'll get a glimpse of some of that material like we recently got "Ruff". smile

Oh, BTW I think Ruff is okay. I was a little underwhelmed by it. The beat bangs hard but the song itself is weak. Plus, I hate it when she sings in a whisper. That's not sexy. That's like telling Barry White to put his sexy voice on when you get in the booth. It just comes off as trying too hard, when you're already a natural. To this day, I can't stand, "So Excited" for that very reason.

I most def heard this song damn near a year ago. I was wondering why I knew the lyrics to it! lmao. Any who, a lot of her best tracks were left off of DJ. This, along with the other leaked tracks could have made it a hit.

T4p the article.

Lol! Its her persona - Strawberry singing lol She sang the same way in "Strawberry Bounce" "Sexhibition" and "All Nite". But yea the whispering is annoying but its very Janet so I'm used it. I think she thinks its sexy sad I don't like "Could This Be Love" for the same reason and "So Excited" is a shitty song. Hate it!

Loving the lyrics! and her voice sounded so youthful in this era. But the production is a bit too generic for my liking. Sounds like everything Pharrell has produced already. BLAH.

and Damita Jo is so underrated.

Like You Don't Love Me mushy I wish there was a music video for that song.

Those hot ass beats were better off with Noreaga.

You see, THIS is exactly why every hip-hop producers should NEVER be allow to work with Janet under any circumstances. She is a dance-pop artist. Her main fanbase has always been dance-pop fans, bubblegum funk fans, and/or MPLS fans. And these kinds of fans were NEVER in favor of seeing beatmakers trying too hard to make Janet more "hood" than necessary.
