If anyone needs to hang it up though, out of anyone, and I wouldn't even consider them artists, are:

Puffy

Quincy

Why? Because one is in denial about Bad Boy being a flop and another is raping his legacy.

Also Lionel needs to get away from the hip-hop crowd, no one would buy his shit if he keeps on doing it.

Ronald Isley just need to stop hanging with rappers, same with Charlie Wilson. They both look desperate as fuck.

EW&F probably are still doing it because Maurice wouldn't want them to quit. That's just my opinion on that one.

Yeah and people INVITE Stevie to their shit. It ain't like he's saying "I need to be on there!" No the people ASKED STEVIE to come. Maybe that's another reason why he never finish his albums. falloff But I'm sure Stevie don't mind this though lol

That's alright, I'd LOVE to spend some time in Stevie's "vault" (...yes, pun intended, lol). boxed

Prince will always put on a great show....unlike most artists, he has that special quality that makes his shows not to be missed...however, I have not liked anything he has put out for years and years.....I dont know if he is not inspired anymore, and I guess if U are a hardcore fan U will find any means by which to support your fave artists, and find something worthwhile in their recent stuff...but I cant with Prince...so can I say he should retire...I dont know, but I will always find a way to see him on tour...he has yet to fall down in that respect.

All excellent points, though it seems you're questioning HIS inspiration based on what YOU like or dislike (...which I suppose would be fair, from your perspective). But I've sincerely enjoyed every album Prince has ever put out (...albeit, there are usually one or two songs on EACH of his albums that I can easily skip over - but even those I feel are well produced). And I LOVE mostly all his music not because I am such a big fan, rather I'm a big fan because I LOVE mostly all his music, lol.

So from MY perspective, Prince seems to continue to be WILDLY inspired. Even though his stage performances have been nowhere near the level of frenzy he used to exhibit in the years leading up to CONTROVERSY (nearly 30 years ago already). In fact, the Prince of TODAY almost bears no resembelence to pre-Controversy Prince - and yet I hope he keeps the music and live performances coming, in whatever manner he sees fit. I hope he never "hangs it up and calls it a day".

Inevitably, all artists will grow old and become a shadow of their younger selves. When Prince HAS to die, I hope it's many year from now, on stage, and after his final encore.

PDogz, the only reason I said that about Prince, and I tried to qualify my comment related to the opinions of hardcore fans is that I too, am biased when it comes to my fave artists....I love EWF, and find that with every new album, if something does not strike me right out the box, I play, and play and play the album until I find something redeeming in the songs....it maybe all of the album, it may be some songs, but I usually find something that I love..

The problem is that I believe that my bias to "wanting" to like the album overshaddows my perspective, and I probably rate the songs are being better than they are...

Then I play "Lovely People" or "All In the Way", for ex. and then Shining Star, or Mighty Mighty, and I realise that by mere comparison, back-to-back, the tracks do not stand up to the Legacy material..even if they might be catchy in some way or another..

It is the curse of the Classic Artist....and one that makes it very difficult to decide when they should call it a day....in some cases, as in Lionel, or Quincy, for ex....they have embarrassed themselves sufficiently in my mind to warrant them stepping away so as not to tarnish what is left....

Others...Stevie, EWF, Prince, etc...I still feel have stuff that could be left in the tank...and in all cases, their transgressions, whether on stage, or in the studio have not put me quite over the edge yet.....

RipTheJacker

this is for the OP

i'll just keep my list to the artists whose music i do have in order to make it simple.

Madonna- to say that she needs to hang it up and call it a day? NOPE. her legacy is secure. i believe that she has smart business skills that will keep her going thumbs up!

Janet Jackson- she's musical royalty. she ain't goin' nowhere. be it in music, movies, or whatever she chooses to do Janet Jackson will always have a place in the industry.cool

prince-does he need to hang it up and call it a day? YEP.

after the LoTuSFlOwEr fiasco,p-f.u.n.k.,the closing of the housequake website, cause and effect, purple and gold, taking the piss on his fanbase(or whatever's left of it),and now the latest sonic atrocity with hot summer.he needs to go the hell away. either that, or have a colostomy bag sewn to his mouth because lately, all that he spews is SHIT. talk to the hand blahblah

Reminds me of the BYOB parties that the Masons throw on the weekends lol At those parties, the older guys, whom nobody told went past their 20's, 30 years ago, are standing in the corner on the wall with their gold rings, the hats and the Stacey Adams shoes on with some baggy jeans trying to pick up on younger women my age. disbelief I think the worst part is that some women actually go for it because they don't mind having a sugar daddy....but most of those men are already married. rolleyes

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Prince. Because he's uninspired, uninspiring, boring, nasty, vain, predictable and dishonest.

On top of that, he's pretty crap now too.

Be grateful, At least he had the sense to break from it. Not much filler in his catalogue it has to be said. Quality over quantity.

I hear you, Timmy. But let's face it, people are inviting him on their stuff based on who he is and the reputation that he has. Thish has very little to do with whether or not he has anything left in his tank. They know that if a person hears that Stevie Wonder is going to appear on their album, it will be a hit. Nobody wants to be the person to tell Stevie that he just does not have it anymore.
