Kid Creole & The Coconuts - What Kept Them From Being Huge In The States? Am I missing something?
I've been listening to their "Ultimate Collection" compilation during my work out, and here's a band who have it all; charisma, solid musicianship & showmanship, versatility, uniqueness, and finally the almost all-times winning factor, multi-racial. So why the hell are they big everywhere else but the US?
I'd love for them to get a huge revival treatment from the US radio/media, they're def well deserved for it. Am I being biased for feeling this way?

Kid Creole was and still is very underrated recording artist. My Male Curiousity & Endicott are still my all-time favorite tracks.
One thing that hurted the chances of KC & The Coconuts were the fact that none of their songs were played on r&b/soul radio back in the days like they should have. Good grief, even crossover-pop artists Lionel Ritchie (the song All Night Long) & Prince (almost all of the Parade album) were influence by KC's sound.
I also remember that neither MTV or BET ever play any of KC's videos. But thankfully, shows like USA Network's Radio 1990 & TBS's Nighttracks did played them during the 1980's.

I only know him because he recorded "the sex of it"...it always seems like he was not a really serious act (could be wrong of course), like Boney M or something....i mean, the "coconuts"???

Kid Creole & The Coconuts ........
They (August Darnell & Company) didn't fit in any of the "neat" demographics of radio. Who and what were they: big band, Latin/jazz/pop band/R&B? A tad too sophisticated and "different" for American radio during their time. Kid Creole may have had a chance if they had been around in the 40's.

I remember hearing Sunshower, Cherchez La Femme by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, being played by my next door neighbors all the time. Years later, I bought that LP and the Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places that's when I discovered they were a part of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, and I've been digging on them ever since.
~ Going Places ~ from Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places ~
Here's one from Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band that I've always dug:

Yup. Kid Creole was one of the founding embers of the Savannah Band. 30 years later I still keep Hard Times in constant rotation on i-tunes. Cory Daye's voice

True, they have alot of flair and flash, but unlike Boney M, there's more than what the eyes catches.

Actually, I gotta give it to you, you posted this song so many times in the past, I was still stuck in Cherchez La Femme untill I heard this one.
One of my FAVE songs is this B-Side to "Stool Pigeon" which is from the same album as "I'm A Wonder Thing, Baby"...
This one rises my adrenaline whenever I'm in a work out...
And word to StarMon Hard Time is my fave song from them along with...
And Organ Grinder's Tale which I couldn't find in youtube. [Edited 6/11/10 5:44am]

"I'm A Wonderful Thing,Baby" is a JAM I love the Chic-styled guitar and the cool lyrics throughout.I'm convinced that Morris Day's image/character was inspired by Kid Creole.Prince is a huge fan of this group.

Intersting!
I've always thought that Morris Day & Kid Creole drew their mannerisms from this cat... [img:$uid]http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q37/tentacledsawfish/calloway-1.jpg[/img:$uid]

A disco classic! Spike Lee used this song to great effect in his 1999 film 'Summer Of Sam'.

I was too scared to go see it. I haven't recovered from the final scenes of Bamboozled yet so I don't even want to rent it. I'm sca-wed .

Don't be scared It's a stunning film, with excellent performances by these guys: Adrien Brody and John Leguizamo:
Another interesting thing about this film: It takes place in the summer of 1977 and I like the way it gives us a glimpse of two competing lifestyles: the disco scene and the punk rock scene. It's a very clever,well-directed film.
