Who here likes the music of Kirk Franklin?

Hello all

I am not Christian, so naturally I do not agree with/cannot relate to all the lyrics.

However, he makes beautiful music, and has lyrics that are concerned with righteousness.

Songs such as Hero, Lean On Me, Silver and Gold, Lamb of God, etc.

Who else here likes his music?

I like a lot of Kirk's music. My issue with him is that he has developed this "formula" to have a "hit" gospel song. He has tanken to sampling a popular song to develop his first single.

Some of my favorites from Kirk:

Could've Been Me

Imagine Me

Brighter Day

Lamb of God

Melodies from Heaven

If u listen 2 Kirk's lyrics, they are more "inspirational" than anything else. Most Gospel and Christian artists do that so they can appeal to the masses.

I used to get offended when I'd go to the club and people would be dancing to his music. I felt liek he was "playing church". Then I heard an interview with him where he talked about reaching people who are NOT in the churches. hmmm

Then one day I heard "Imagine Me". It touched me so deeply. touched

Imagine me
Loving what I see when the mirror looks at me cause I
I imagine me
In a place of no insecurities
And I'm finally happy cause
I imagine me

Letting go of all of the ones who hurt me
Cause they never did deserve me
Can you imagine me?
Saying no to thoughts that try to control me
Remembering all you told me
Lord, can you imagine me?
Over what my mama said
And healed from what my daddy did
And I wanna live and not read that page again

[Chorus:]
Imagine me, being free, trusting you totally finally I can...
Imagine me
I admit it was hard to see
You being in love with someone like me
But finally I can...
Imagine me

Being strong
And not letting people break me down
You won't get that joy this time around
Can you imagine me?
In a world (in a world) where nobody has to live afraid
Because of your love fears gone away
Can you imagine me?

[Bridge:]
Letting go of my past
And glad I have another chance
And my heart will dance
'Cause I don't have to read that page again

[Chorus x2]

[Vamp:]
Gone, gone, it's gone, all gone

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

He did..I posted about it earlier.

It's great!

I'm having youtube issues or I'd post it.

It's just so...perky!

It's one of those songs that just makes you want to praise.

If not the good lord then...peanut butter.

Just makes you want to praise something!

He also sampled "This Is It" from Kenny Loggins.

Earth Wind and Fire's "September".

One Nation Under A Groove

"This Place Hotel (AKA Heartbreak Hotel)"

Kirk's my man. Imagine Me is one of his best inspirational joints. He's about due for another God's Property record, (If they're still together). He's not too preachy with his style. I can dig it.

Is he related to that rapper named Plies? I swear they're brothers smile

Im not into what he does now, but I appreciate Kirk Franklin and the Family for their first two albums in the early mid nineties. Why We Sing and Melodies From Heaven played regularly on local r&b radio, and was the first exposure I had to gospel music outside of church. It was a nice "gateway" if you will, to including Christian and Gospel music in my life apart from Sunday service. Kirk helped introduce me to the likes of Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Sapp etc who I keep in my headphones often to this day. A lot of folks didnt think he should be targeting his music to secular radio but I think it likely did open eyes for a lot of young people who otherwise wouldn't have added Christian and Gospel music to their personal worship. For me as a Christian, its been helpful over the years.

God's Property will NEVER be associated with Kirk again. They sued him over royalities. Not sure if they won or not.

"This Place Hotel (AKA Heartbreak Hotel)"

The original, album version of this track stole the groove from "If I Was Your Girlfriend." lol The bass and chorus (played on a synth) are unmistakable.

Kirk is okay to a certain extent...though when I think of gospel music, his isn't the first that comes to mind. When I'm really down and want some gospel music to uplift me, that's when I put on Sam Cooke, the Clark Sisters, the Mighty Clouds of Joy or Mahalia...but that's just me. I get more spirituality and upliftment from the old school gospel than the gospel out here now.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

He was the music director and piano player 4 Tonex afew years ago. I was impressed with everything about that live show.

I can't stand the whole talking act while a chorus is singing. It is irritating in EVERY single way and lazy.

Here's one lyric we ALL may relate to:

Now behold the Lamb
the Precious Lamb of God
Born into sin that I may live again
He's the precious Lamb of God
When I always didn't do right
I went left he told me to go right
Now i'm standing right here in th mist of my tears
Lord I thank you for being the lamb of God holy

I love how God uses Kirk as a tool to bring lost people to him. Even if you don't realize it yet, God is working hard in your life.

So hold my hand
Let me take you to a friend of mine
He's waiting just to ease your troubled mind
Yeah, yeah, He loves you more than you'll ever know
'Stead of walking away

"Not to sound cosmic, but I've made plans for the next 3,000 years," he says. "Before, it was only three days at a time."
