Lady Gaga for the dummies Could someone please explain to me what makes her an interesting artist?
Don't tell me about her clothes, hairstyle, attitude, whatever, i don't care about that. Tell me about the music and nothing else.
I fail to hear anything interesting from her singles (never heard her full albums), and i fail to hear what makes her music different from anything on the Top 40. To me she's just another dance artist, nothing different from any Kylie Minogue wannabe, her music just sounds well... common, generic and artificially conceived in order to chart.
Now it seems many people here think she's a talented composer. I've heard many weird things on the org, i'll give you that, but i'm curious. What makes her interesting (musically) for those of you who claim she's such a major artist? I might have missed something, i don't know...
Thanks. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Bizarre image (I know you don't want to hear it but it gets her the attention), interesting videos, catchy songs, and the Madonna formula. That's it. I wouldn't call her major because she hasn't done anything yet, and she's really over-hyped.
I like her and she makes some good pop songs, but her pretentiousness and her phony-ness is getting on my nerves.

She writes her own schitt (and pop hits for other artists)... very memorable hooks, can sing, and plays piano. I have watched some great live performance vids with her playing piano, but I have not bought her albums because I suspect the production glosses over her talent. But yeah, under all the crazy fashion and gimmicks, she is an industry singer-songwriter basically. (I think THAT is what is similar to the 70s and 80s.)

It's a tragedy having to see her on Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Grace Jones, Marilyn Manson Youtube comments [Edited 6/4/10 21:14pm]

That VOICE, her openness about playing an instrument (so many pop stars hide it!), openly stands up for equality and how much she loves her fans:
I also LOVE that she has acoustic versions of all her songs to prove she can really sing them and knows them inside out:
But really, if you have to search for a reason to like her, why bother? If people have to spell it out for you, then just let it go. You don't have to like her just because a lot of people do. I don't make threads titled "CHRISTINA - MAKE ME LIKE HER" because I don't want to like her and don't care to.
Also, it's pretty silly to judge a (pop) artist on their singles, singles are designed to sell, be instantly catchy and not much else. If you really want to like her, don't bother with The Fame just go straight to The Fame Monster. [Edited 6/4/10 21:21pm]

Despite the fact that every artist nowadays is compared to her, and she is a tad overrated (after only having released 2 studio albums in two years), I think she's incredibly talented. She writes her songs, she plays her own instruments, and she creates her own vibe. To deny her artistic talent is to deny music.
However, she'll have to show that she has some staying power, before she can be compared to Christina, Britney, Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, or any of the legends or icons. All these artists have proven that, with hit single after hit single, they've been able to hold their own for years. Lady Gaga is a newbie, a fresh face. She has to show the world that she can stick around.

She's the first intelligent pop star with something to say in God knows how long. The raw smarts and ambition are what remind me of Madonna more than anything. GaGa is far ahead of where Madonna was at this point in her career (and is now) in terms of musical talent, however.

She writes her own music and plays on stage, also she loves her fans alot . With Love there is no Death

True but... if 'Just Dance' is her 'Holiday', 'Bad Romance' is her 'Into The Groove' and 'Alejandro' her 'La Isla Bonita' then she is nowhere near Madonna in terms of song quality

I thank God for there's Lady Gaga! I'm tired of these Rihannas and Beyonces everywhere.. She's better than those two together! May you rest in peace, my beautiful queen, Teena Marie

The comments in here are utterly ridiculous.
OP, you are correct in your assumptions. To others, you see that chick in my avatar? She would eat, not only Lady GooGooGaGa, but any other female in mainstream music for breakfast. She got 100 times more talent, plenny better and more innovative style (no, not putting a bag over your head and calling it style ffs) and she's ACTUALLY different and a whole better role model......oh and she was 35 years ago. Fucking Lady GooGooGaGa....W.T.F......are you Prince fans? This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

I see Just Dance as her Everybody, to be honest. But GaGa's music is much darker in general than Madonna's was until Like a Prayer - which was four albums in. This is only her first album (and I don't consider TFM to be a full studio album for her - it's an EP). [Edited 6/5/10 10:40am]

yeah i have her first album but that was before she was really big,now she keeps getting overrated, shes got a good voice, not an amazing voice though, most people who think that don't listen to enough soul/blues music, probs because all they've ever known is shitney voices so gaga's is the best they've heard,im still surprised after the last gaga thread people STILL think she writes her own songs...PEOPLE SHE CO-WRITES MOST OF THEM WHICH CAN ALSO COVER SONG EDITING!!! (which can mean other people write her songs and she crosses out a few lines that she doesn't want) lol i don't like the style icon thing either, i dont like it about her, gracejones or madonna seeing as they don't design the clothes they or a contact just call a designer and say ''design me something''
when i buy a pop album i buy it for fun, when i buy serious music i buy it for passionate reasons i just wish other people who bought pop would just admit it's only a bit of fun..some are getting serious about it now and im like ''shit..is this the best voice you've heard? what a sad shitty broad little music collection you must have''

Right now, I find her image and antics much more interesting that the music itself. The Fame was, for me, a cheesy-produced album, a mix of Rihanna with some cheesy/epic EuroDance.
I mean, I understand why Pokerface and Just Dance were hits (I LOVE those songs, but I'm not a fan of the rest of the album, and songs like Paparazi try too hard); But I just can't see why those singles made her a star all over the world (especially IN the US) with this kind of over-the-top club/electro sound. In other words, she should be a star in the electronic/club lists, not in the billboard mainstream hits list, and obviously the mainstream media shouldn't be paying this crazy level of attention to her. I guess times are changing, for the better Electronic music should be much more popular, and if Gaga is the leader of this revival, fine by me...
The only track I really enjoy from the Fame Monster is Bad Romance; I can't stand Telephone, mainly because of Beyoncé

For me, the image came first. From what I can see she's a tolerable vocalist/musician. We gotta see what Gaga would do with the next album once she gets done with promotion of the first album + bonus CD and the tour.

maybe the leader of cheesy dance music like cascada (who to me is a unmentioned but big inspiration of gaga's) but not electronic dance, that stuff is mind blowing sometimes..daft punk and justice should be the leaders of that genre, and both of them are already pretty big ''now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, a fanatical criminal''

Daft Punk are gods, but screw Justice, they suck monkeyballs! give me Basement Jaxx instead...

aah! let there be light and phantom is soo good by justice though, the D.A.N.C.E and D.V.N.O aren't as good as some of the stuff on the album ''now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, a fanatical criminal''

She's like Madonna with talent ..... that's why i like her, she also has that whole singer-songwriter, musician vibe, which we all know apart from a hand full of artist like Amy Winehouse , Ms Hill , Ms Keys (who's a bit weak in the songwriting area)
There's not much of these cat's around....
I think if she does not get to carried away by the Fame she will be good for music .... a breath of fresh air! Eye Was Born & Raised On The Same Plantation In The United States Of The Red, White And Blue Eye Never Knew That Eye Was Different Til Dr. King Was On The Balcony

They both have about the same amount of talent except Madonna is a better dancer and has better songs.
I think she should pull away from RedOne on her sophomore album. He's getting stale.

Gaga is the daughter that David Bowie & Madonna might of had if they were happily married.

I don't know what you were saying here but we're barely into a second album, so comparisons can probably stop at "Like A Virgin". She's younger than Madonna was at this point in her career too and is starting with a much larger musical vocabulary so.. yeah the potential to write better shit than Live To Tell is quite foreseeable.

Well she only had one major CD out, give it time i'm sure she will....
Madonna's had alot of rubbish released so give it time ... Eye Was Born & Raised On The Same Plantation In The United States Of The Red, White And Blue Eye Never Knew That Eye Was Different Til Dr. King Was On The Balcony
