Old Rihanna, New Rihanna

Anyone remember this girl?

lol

Even if you don't care for her, if you had the choice, would you resurrect old Rihanna or keep the new "edgy" girl?

It's hard to imagine that Riri used to be this cute little sunshine girl with music for sunny days. I haven't made up my mind yet whether I prefer her old or new self, but I'm leaning towards old Rihanna. Just because all this dark, "edgy", morbid stuff is getting too much for me. I was never a big fan of hers, but now I am longing for the Pon de Replay girl. At least we got Rude Boy. The world is f***ed up as it is, I don't need to have the radio and TV full of... darkness.

Ms Blank Stare just gives off the vibe that she's the Grim Reaper's silly assistant. *shivers*

I think both Rihannas are equally bad. And although I haven't heard the album. I don't know which darkness you are talking about. She did a dark song (RR) and 3 happy happy songs (RB, Hard, TA)...

lol I wouldn't call them happy songs. And it's not just the lyrics, it's the image. It's all just black and negative, and reeking of destruction. Black clothes, black make up, spikes, bombs exploding, deserts, dead trees, blood, yadda yadda yadda. Her image and videos are just SO depressing, it's tiresome. RB is the only song and video in years that has been "happy" and colorful. And it's getting worse by the fact that since Gaga is in love with the morbid everyone has to go down that road.

Nowadays I just want some happy smiling people that look like the enjoy life for goodness sake! lol

NEW NEW NEW.

I couldn't stand her when she was that interchangeable, generic, zero personality nobody.

Give me this bizarre, bruised but not broken, wild cat fashionista any day.

Her voice got better too IMO (compare Unfaithful to Russian Roulette)

The "New Rihanna", is not new at all and certainly not original. She has FeFe Dobson to thank for it. Her people cannot even come up with anything that is original...I kinda perfer the old Rihanna, at least this was closer to her true self.

She is only playing by the album theme (supposedly). The album itself is not really "darK' but more so of her trying to force herself to look more "adult". I believe it stems from being an abuse victim. I kind of felt that same way too afterwards, you either leave out a domestic relationship feeling low and helpless, or angry and bitter.

Your view of "the dark side" feels like it is more of a misunderstanding than an actual viewpoint. Do you even have the album to judge? Really its not a great album, and if anything she is trying to hard to be seen as "Hard" so to speak. She is still finding herslef in my opinion and she's still young..she has plenty of time to try and find herself.

Its obvious in interviews and general way she potrays herself in image that she still has not found HER.

That's because SHE is not the one in control of her image.
I am not sure what you mean with me misunderstanding my view of "the dark side"?
I have listened to the album, and I do like several of the songs. I understand it's the concept of the album and that it fits after her violent ex. And I don't mind her being edgy, if that's what you can call it. But I see a stiff girl with a lack of personality trying to look cool and sound hard, and especially after how she entered the biz it doesn't feel right. And after a year of that image I'm just longing for something else. As I said, I'm not a fan, but the girl is gonna stick around, so all I can do is wish for a change. I don't want her to go generic and I love a lot of her outfits, but you can be sharp and artistic in different ways... I just see a lot of darkness, and it's cool if you don't mind it or feel that way. To me Rihanna has the voice that fits Pon de Replay and Rude Boy and that's the kind of style she should go back to, at least for a while.

Just the way you expressed your viewpoint of "dark side" earlier was only 1 point away from being a post from TonyVanDam's discussions about her worshiping 'the occult'.

I actually like the style she chose but the songs she chose to sing were terrible and sound forced..except for "Rude Boy" "Cold Case Love"..and that was about it for me.."Photographs" was nice also.

You had also put Laday Gaga in the mix and her image is not "dark" to me; but engaging...her music is not dark or strange at all...it more dance pop if anything it is supposed to be. Computer Blue, Others Here With Us, All The Critics Love You In New York, is dark if you want to go there but NOT Rihanna..I laugh at her if she thought she was tough or bad at all. I can predict her changing things up for the next round.

I was actually afraid that I'd sound like Tony with this. lol
I don't think she worships Satan and is part of some big dangerous conspiracy, not at all!
But her videos still contain what I have listed before, which just make me feel like all that's missing in them is the Grim Reaper. It's in now and will change, it always does, I just hope its sooner than later.
You're right when you say Lady Gaga's music isn't dark, because I definitely don't think it is. It's mostly a better version of Eastern European Eurovison music. But to me her image is the opposite (which I assume is intentional). She has a somewhat eerie vibe about her and sometimes just comes across as soulless, like a depressed fembot.

Like I told LastDecember, I'm not convince that Rhianna is bright enough to know exactly what she is doing in terms of symbolism. But that has not stop her from allowing herself to be an industry puppet.

I like the Rihanna that did "Don't Stop The Music" the most.

The new album had some decent stuff too once I gave it a non-prejudiced listen. I've played it quite a lot as harmless background music, although I had hopes for her to have grown into a proper artist by this point. Musically, she's still too much of a product of her record company.

i like new rihanna. she's grown up. i can't handle that teeny bop mess.

new rihanna has a more appealing style (albeit borrowed from females past) and her music is much more fun and sexy. Can't say her voice has changed all that much. I'd like to see her gain some strength and heart in this area. she's more a mover than a dancer so I don't expect to see much evolvement here. Anyway....yay RiRi!!!

You don't have to listen to her, no one is forcing you. Personally, I think her voice has grown a LOT since her first album. I stated above that's one reason I'm a much bigger fan of hers these days. Listen to Unfaithful then Russian Roulette - HUGE difference in vocal ability.
