Yeah, this is a Doobie song hands down and one of my all time favorites. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Dang never heard Aretha's version before now.
Although Aretha's version is good, the Doobie's version is still better. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Aretha's is cute but the "pep" is all wrong for the lyrics. Advantage Doobie. Space for sale...

I never knew Arethat did this song. It's very much in the vein of early 80's pop (reminds me very much of any number of songs from 1979-1981). It's cute, but nothing compares to Michael McDonald's high tenor, and the Doobie Brothers' harmonies, on that song.
I never thought I'd say this but: DOOBIE all the way. hahaha

I prefer The Doobie Brothers version of this song. However, the best version I've ever heard of "Can't Turn You Loose" is Aretha's version on that same album. Andy is a four letter word.

Although Aretha's version is good, the Doobie's version is still better. I vote for The Doobie Brothers for the same reason. BTW, M-People also did a cover of this song as well.

Here it is-What a Fool Believes is that rarest of things-a perfect song. You can't fuck it up because it is perfectly crafted. What throws this song off are the weird, chopped up arrangements and phrasings. This is not a song that accomodates Aretha's runs and on top of that, it is more of a light rnb/pop song-not Aretha's forte. I still like it, though. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

So many of you have never heard Aretha's version I remember hearing it on the radio in 1980,only months after the Doobies' version had peaked.

I heard it while watching "Throwback Soul Train". Even then I was like "this version pales to the Doobies'".

Aretha's version got da Funk!!! I like both versions but I've always slightly preferred Aretha's. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I like the arrangement of Aretha's cover but I prefer The Doobies
oh, and George Michael's version "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Aretha may be the Queen of Covers, but nothing beats the original in this case. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

on Aretha's version, that be Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson providing that funk on the bass guitar...the additional vocals come from Hamish Stuart of The Average White Band Music Royalty in Motion
