Karen Carpenter had a voice like velvet. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Despite their conservatism, I love them too.

Love them: Monday mornings and close to you are my favourite songs.

I don't own anything from them,,,,but I like their music, and I can see myself collecting their stuff in the future.

I think they caught so much unnecessary bullying because of their so-called wholesome image.

I always adored Karen's voice and the production end of thier tenure at A & M, being that was the only Tenure.

"Ticket To Ride" is probably my favorite Carpenters song. [Edited 5/30/10 18:41pm]

I understand it is about a third of that if you order from Amazon Japan. About $23 per cd. Truly for collectors.

“Not that we’re totally opposite from that; we’re not. But there’s an in-between, you know what I mean? I don’t drink a whole hell of a lot. I do have wine with dinner. I voted to make marijuana legal. I believe in premarital sex. But then, I don’t smoke.”
Thanks for sharing. | |

Wow! Thanks for the journey. I've always loved their stuff. Karen's voice was so clear.
On another note: Were they Mormons or something? I know they came from a very conservative background and all but those up to the neck blouses screams Mormon or Baptist to me.

I bought it on pre-release for about 300 euro. I'm a sucker for boxed sets

I think the neck blouses and the exaggerated conservatism was the label's doing. I remember watching a documentary about them were Richard said that he was pissed off when the label decided to put this picture as the album cover for "Close To You".

The powers that be used or tried to use The Carpenters as a contrast to the 60's/ early 70's counter culture. I'm not sure what Richard's or Karen's political views were/are and I really didn't care. One thing about the late 60's, 70's people respected good music and knew good music/musicians when they heard them, "image" be damn.
No different than what they did to the actor Troy Donahue.

This new format doesn't look good at all. Does this work with Macs? [Edited 5/31/10 14:00pm] "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

Their whole thing brings to mind Dionne Warwick and her relationship with Burt Bacharach,,,,down to her own squeaky clean image as well.
Its no wonder why Dionne has always been one of their fans.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Was Ms. Warwick all that squeaky clean tho' or was she or is she just more discrete.?
There's nothing wrong with that.......
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No she wasn't, she got caught in the image mind game too
But she got her fair share of criticism of not being "vocal" enough, loud enough or flamboyant enough in the "me" era of the 70s, so I'm assuming she understood them because of that.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I thought Warwick spoke up and out when it was needed but folks think if your heads not swivelin', you aren't cussing up storm, then you must have sold out to something or someone. Now that I think of it, I don't recall Warwick every sporting a fro. Yep, she was a sell out. I'm being facitious.

I think her sister Dee Dee summed it up rather perfectly regarding those criticisms when she said in one of the documentaries about Dionne "How BLACK you gotta be?". And there you go
