On another note: Were they Mormons or something? I know they came from a very conservative background and all but those up to the neck blouses screams Mormon or Baptist to me.

I think the neck blouses and the exaggerated conservatism was the label's doing. I remember watching a documentary about them were Richard said that he was pissed off when the label decided to put this picture as the album cover for "Close To You".

The powers that be used or tried to use The Carpenters as a contrast to the 60's/ early 70's counter culture. I'm not sure what Richard's or Karen's political views were/are and I really didn't care. One thing about the late 60's, 70's people respected good music and knew good music/musicians when they heard them, "image" be damn.

No different than what they did to the actor Troy Donahue.

I think her sister Dee Dee summed it up rather perfectly regarding those criticisms when she said in one of the documentaries about Dionne "How BLACK you gotta be?". And there you go
