For me after MJ's passing my enthusiasm for music hit an all time low for a few months, it wasn't really until Badu's last album that I started feeling passionate about music again. So no, I don't think the industry has changed I think it's just almost like a weird grieving phase MJ fans are going through. I imagine fans of any artist who has passed away feel the same thing.

Well, I've probably overstated it but it would be nice if he would have made his comeback and were still here to enjoy his family.
I think to be more realistic and less emotional the Music Industry has suffered because of file sharing. The power of the Internet. (No more mystique for Artists.) Record Companies going down the tubes
No record stores like Tower and Virgin. You could go in and see "Upcoming Releases" and check out a CD at a listening station. Or see a video.
You sometimes never know an Artist will have a new album out. "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

I don't believe that it's left everyone. There's still a lot of great music being made. But something's happened to the living "greats". A lot of them seem to have run out of good ideas. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Ditto. You wouldn't know it from my firey loathing of the woman now, but way back when DC were first out I kind of liked her. The turning point for me was when Destiny's Child won those first Grammy's and Bouncy's ego got huge.
Now I just want someone to beat her with a blunt object. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Personally, I don't believe that it's file-sharing or torrents or youtube that's to blame. I think it's the focus on immediate cash payback over true artistry on the part of the labels that's caused the bulk of the problem. The industry has had years to adjust to the realities of modern technology and so far their only resonse has been to moan and cry and sue people.
Everyone's got to get the hot name producer; everyone's got to jump on whatever the trend bandwagon of the week is; everyone's got to have their first single release be a HIT with no regard for allowing the performer to develop and mature; and everyone is gearing their releases to musically-ignorant 14 year olds.
That approach has more than proven not to work, but they just keep on doing it. What was that definition for insanity, again? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Radiohead! Man, I was so into them. In Rainbows was okay but it seems that even Thom Yorke is tired of them as he's doing his solo thing and has another side band....

Selling out a fifty night residency at the O2 is a pretty decent comeback, whether or not he got to do them is almost irrelevant.
I don't think current state of the music industry is as dire as people think. There's plenty of music out there you just have to adapt and learn ways of finding it. Being a music lover is much less passive than it was before the internet, itunes, file sharing etc. I actually think that's a good thing.
Anyway.... Dr Dre Eminem 2Pac Musiq Soulchild Monica Prince...I realised I still haven't listened to LotUSFlow3r or MPLSound yet despite having then for quite a while.

1. Prince -- Since the success of 3121, he has gotten musically boring again.
2. R. Kelly -- Born In The 90's & 12 Play are still classic albums. But he has been using the same 12 Play-inspired chord progression in his later work for him and for hits he produced for other people. Because of his uncontrollable lust for underage girls (counting his first wife Aaliyah), I can never listening to the songs from 12 Play the same way again.
3. Lady Gaga -- Previous threads of my own AND from other orgers about occultic symbolism is only part of the story. The overhypeness of The Fame Monster EP has gotten so high to the point that I'm really don't care for anything beside selected tracks from The Fame.
4. Janet Jackson -- Although I still care for her as an actress & an almost nude model, I've been disappointed with her as a recording artist in recent years. Knowing what I know now, she has not released another musical masterpiece since The Velvet Rope.

I still listen to Tori, but her music doesn't grab me like it used to. Her music used to get to my emotional side. I think I'm just getting older and relying on other means to emotionally vent. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

Ya know, Invincible is definitely not my favorite album due to it being unfocused, being overproduced in some parts, and too many songs, but I've never seen it as terrible as some fans think "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Darien Brockington- simply lost interest Janet Jackson- still love her, but I haven't really been feeling her albums on a longtime basis since All For You, and even that one, but I did enjoy Discipline New Edition- maybe I expected too much when One Love came out and then they released that song with New Kids On The Block..... but I'm still hoping they'll release a good album again one day Robin Thicke- I LOVED A Beautiful World and The Evolution of Robin Thicke.....then Something Else came out and I sensed something was wrong....then Sex Therapy came and I knew..... Terence Trent D'Arby- maybe I haven't given his later work a better listen, whatever it is, I just haven't haven't really enjoyed his work post Symphony Of Damn Trey Songz- I wouldn't say love but I enjoyed his first album had good expectations for him, but now it's like he doesn't know whether he wants to be R. Kelly or Yung Joc "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

That's what I did with MJ... I had given up on him a long time ago, but now I wish he was still here... "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I always believed a good song is just that, a good song. Doesn't matter who recorded it, who's is playing on it, or what genre.
Most of the artists that are mentioned on this thread have more to do with Pop culture. If they came out with a GREAT song, you would love them again, period. Most of them are not singer/songwriters, but mere performance artists. I can still care about and respect the true singer/songwriter, not a cash cow that is disguised as one.
So the BIG question is: Is it that lack of good material that is making you less appreciative?

MJ hadn't done anything of musical worth since Dangerous, and on a personal level he'd disgraced himself. Not everyone was that bothered.
