It's a cool cover, I agree. smile
The album it's from, Freaky Styley, was produced by George Clinton.
An unusually funky album from the Chilis, especially compared to their last three albums.
But my favourite original song from that album is probably this one (video is NSFW):

Makes TOTAL sense headbang

I saw a PBS documentary about George & the P-Funk gang where the Red Hot Chili talked about George's production, I had no idea which album though untill you pointed out.

I'm DEF gonna get it after hearing ]Jungleman music thanx a plenty for the tip thumbs up!

I can recommend the remaster, which has a few bonus tracks, including two demos made even before their self-titled first album. However if you own the outtake and rarities disc Out In L.A. you already have those demos.

Here is a live performance of another song from the "Freaky Styley" album, Yertle the Turtle. They cover "Cosmic Slop" and "Atomic Dog" about 5 or 6 minutes in.

I actually loved the "Freaky styley" album as a kid in the 80's.
"If you want me to stay" was my favourite track on it.
Then when I was 14 or so I found "Fresh" by "Sly & The Family Stone" on cd
and thought.Hey it got a song that got the same title as Red hot chilipeppers.
could it be the same song??

Then I listened to the original and it floored me!!!!smile

Also on that "Freaky styley" album I discovered "The Meters" cuz they do a cover
of the song "Africa" but they re-named it "Hollywood"

That whole album was great (Freaky Styley) and their covers were really good, George Clinton was in there too. The Chilis were truly original then, long before they became commercial.
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Yep, the 80s + BSSM were the golden years of RHCP, after that is was blah, despite some excellent singles...

Fellas, obviously Sly'soriginal is much better, but that's not the point here...
The RCHP deserve a lot of credit for this version; I mean, they turned a funk/R&B classic into a laid-back pop/rock single with a very carefree, sexy & smooth vibe. Excellent version in my eyes...

You say that like its a good thing. What you like about it is what I dislike about it. I don't think its that good.

Well, of course you can say that you don't like the relaxed/friendly vibe of the cover, but I usually respect covers that offer something new or a different side previously unheard in the original version wink

I agree it's not nearly as good as the original, but I always give them credit for being some talented & crazy mofos, and for the fact that they were doing the kind of music that very few others were doing at that time.

I actually prefer Hollywood, which is something of a cover of the Meters' Africa. You can hear George on this one, too.
