Jodeci vs Dru Hill

I can't lie, back in the 1990s, Jodeci was one of my favorite groups on the planet. While Boyz II Men was all right, there was something about the damaged genius of Jodeci that made them more appealing. Yet, when Dru Hill debuted it seemed that they were determined to steal Jodeci's thunder, even going so far as to use one of their producers Darryl Pearson, who also hails from Baltimore, recalls.

"On the track that I produced, ‘So Special,’ I was trying to give the music an old-school sound that compared to what groups like the Dramatics or the Spinners had done," says Pearson. "I was using vintage guitars and synthesizers that I had bought when I was working with [Jodeci producer] DeVante Swing.”

Having first worked with Jodeci, beginning with their 1993 sophomore project Diary of a Mad Band (1993), Pearson remembers that lead singer K-Ci Hailey was pissed when he heard Dru Hill. “I told him, ‘Man, Sisqo admires you guys, the whole group does.’ Then I told him, ‘Man, you sound like Bobby Womack anyway and he’s not mad at you.’ Really, there’s nothing new under the sun.”

It would be better to have Dru Hill vs Jagged Edge

This thread comes up every 6 months or so. Jodeci for sure, but Dru Hill whips every other mid 90s rnb goups (JE, 112, Az Yet, Immature, Sons of Funk, whoever.)

Now, Playa that's another story ...

It depends....especially since one came out at the beginning of the 90s and the 2nd group toward the end. I would have to say Jodeci. Mostly because they had more songs that I liked (but that's not saying much either).

I agree. Jodeci is just HORRID. Vapid, sex-crazed music. It was like R. Kelly cloned.

K-Ci and Jojo were even worse.

Oddly, both DruHill and Jodeci only had 3 albums each, which speaks to the stunted longevity of those types of groups back then. And that's another thread to itself.

No competition. Jodeci easily.

Dru Hill though is better than any other male R&B singing group that debuted in 1996 or after.

Wow, completely 100% disagree. Jodeci knocks Dru Hill off the map anyday judging from the music they made during their hey day. Sisqo can sing, but his vocals are no match for K-Ci's. It doesn't matter that they only had 3 albums alone because obviously, neither group is still not forgotten. Sex-crazed music existed long before Jodeci came onto the music scene...the group was the perfect fit for the early 90's. There wasn't not one group in existence when Jodeci came out until Dru Hill came out with the single "Tell Me" in '96, but of course by then, Jodeci's fire was turning into smoke. K-Ci & JoJo had a couple of good albums though I prefer their first one over the last two they had as a duo.

I fixed your first sentence for you. biggrin

I'm not disagreeing. However, I feel that Jodeci messed up when they decided to break up. All of them got big heads and did not realize that they were a group and everyone played their own part. The same could be the said for Dru Hill. They both were great, but didn't know how to function as a group.

I heard Tom Joyner say this a while back, groups like Dru Hill, Jodeci, EnVogue, SWV, TLC couldn't seem to stay together because they didn't dress alike. Look at groups like Boyz II Men, The Temptations, Four Tops, etc. All of these groups dressed alike and stayed together. Those other groups didn't.

lol Thanks for the correction. lol wink
I do agree with you on the whole ego thing. I think partly the reason why K-Ci screeches more so now than back then is because he still has an ego. IMO I think all four of the members of Jodeci had an ego about THEIR group per say compared to all the others who were out at the same time and that became their demise. As far as your comment regarding what Tom Joyner said, well he's not one of my favorite people, but I do understand his point. But I thought all the members of Jodeci did dress alike when they first came out with "Forever My Lady"... hmmm

I agree and disagree. Yes it's true i've always stated here that Jodeci
after their debut album spent much of the rest of the 90's trying to
outsex R.Kelly. Where i disagree with you is when K-Ci and JoJo became
a duo. They were the exact opposite of Jodeci. They actually sung real
songs about love without all the sexual connotations and their first
two albums were really good. Dru Hill had a couple of songs that i liked
such as Tell Me and These Are the Times but everything else was kind of blah.

You are so right. When K-ci and JoJo went out as a duo, they became very pop with their music selections. No "Freak'n You" for them.

I think ur post tells us why this is not a good pairing to put together. When Jodeci was winding down, Dru Hill was just getting started. If it was Dru Hill and Jagged Edge, I could see....maybe even Jodeci and H-Town would be a better battle.

LOL Yeah I was 5/4 years old when Dru Hill came out what 1995/1996, so I know what you mean. Jagged Edge was okay, but they're not all that great, there's a few songs from them I like but still, I wouldn't even try to compare them to Dru Hill. Jodeci and H-Town? Well, Jodeci has more memeorable songs than H-Town, let's just be real. biggrin

Maybe so, but Jodeci and H-Town were more counterparts than Jodeci and Dru Hill. H-Town had quite a few hits.

They Like It Slow
