Could "Crush On You" / "Curiosity" by the Jets be considered...funk? Ok think about the bass lines in the songs..pretty Minneapolis style bass and synth funk riffs...however the songs are really not CONSTRUCTED as such to be considered AS funk.
However I am making a "Funk" Playlist on my ipod (think I got about a good 300 songs so far maybe and I am only on "J". They have elements of funk say, however would it sound weird with funk giants like Cameo, Chaka? I did not discriminate this era or any era at the start of funk..I will throw down on some Dam Funk and Chromeo but could these two songs be...funk...in ways? It may be too pop though..but those Minneapolis sounds keep bringing me back.. Your thoughts??? Straight Jacket Funk Affair

In thinkin about your mix this all would depend on which era of Chaka or Cameo you're puttin together. If your goin for Chaka during the era of "Masterjam" "I Feel For You" or "CK" then "Crush On You" with it's synths and drum machines would be considered dance pop. Now, if you're talkin "Cameo" from "Style" "She's Strange" "Single Life" and "Candy", then "Curiosity" with it's Prince esque rhythm guitar, thumpin bass, Linn drums and keys is pretty damn funky enough lol

"The Jet's" can in no way be considered FUNK (IMHO). Love their music though, I would consider them POP.

When I put those two songs in my computer so I could listen to shuffle, I listed them under a genre I started called "Late 80s Funk". Fast R&B songs of the late 1980s just didn't have the same feel as 1970s and early 1980s funk and I didn't want them popping up in the middle of a bunch of funk from the 1970s and early 1980s because it would spoil the mood I was in.
I did the same with slow songs too. I started a genre in the computer called "Slow Jams Late 80s" (and I have very few in that genre ). Basically, anything that was released after May 1985 (after I graduated high school...also after Shitney came along), whether slow or fast, I put "Late 80s" behind it unless it was a 1990s song. Everything before May 1985, I have listed as either simply "Funk", "Slow Jam", or "Disco". Even straight out rock songs such as "Let's Go Crazy" or "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad", I have listed as "Funk" so they will play alongside the other fast songs of that era. It's hard to put them in exactly the genre they are because if you do, they won't play with the other songs of the era and recreate the feel it was like it used to be on the radio. And I sure as hell didn't want "Let's Go Crazy" popping up in the "Pop/Rock" category when I'm in the mood for stuff like Duran Duran or Def Leppard. You have to lie on the genres of some of those songs to get them to play alongside other songs in the computer if you want the true feel of radio of the era. Andy is a four letter word.

Both tracks are still r&b/soul classics regardless.
