I had heard rumors from people (nothing in print of course) that Rick used to fire up joints on stage, then after the show, he would go somewhere change clothes, take off his wig, and leave the building through the front of the house while the police were searching the building for someone who looked entirely different (the Rick James persona).

I could believe that looking at pictures of his hair from "Street Songs" and later but what I couldn't understand was how I could see his scalp through the braids on his earlier albums. Of course, I didn't know what weave was back then.

That's the era that confirmed to me that he must be wearing weaves, wigs, or something. I saw clips of him in his jail cell on "Behind The Music" and his hair was ultra short, straight, and slicked down. Then, his hair is magically like it is in this picture. Then he had a cameo in the movie "Life" with the short, slicked down hair. Then, magically it was again like this picture. Hair don't grow that damn fast.
