Okay, I actually had a chance 2 really explore this album. I like Jamie Lidell and the album is DRIPPING in Prince-influenced sounds but it really didn't go anywhere Price's music hasn't been before. It kinda reminded me of when "The Love Below" came out and some1 called it "The greatest Prince album that Prince never made". I don't understand how any1 can say U improved on some1's sound simply by modeling your sound after theirs.
That having been said, I really like the album. Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

Nothing. I get sick and tired of people on this board wanting Prince to be someone else. He has been Prince in the music world for over 30 years get over it. If you hate RnB then go find another artist to follow because that is P's base and he is never going to drop it and usually all this comparision is based on the irrational haterade on RnB on this board.

Can this album of real music and artistry get more attention please? Instead of utter shit like Lady Gaga and all that other crap you chat about 24/7 on a Prince forum....yes Prince, a real musician who should of educated you. What the OP put is ridiculous but, bottom line is that this album is better than 90% of what's out there right now, that includes all your Gaga's, ya MJs (modern), ya Ushers, ya Kanyes and whoever you give undeserved attention. Jamie Lidell is a modern day legend in the making. You really think people including ones listed above can do something like this? (From Compass) http://www.youtube.com/wa...4dhMIz3jvc http://www.youtube.com/wa...SUjza8Tnf8 People.....open your minds, please. Hs is "sonically" interesting. Beats and riffs are funky. Uses unconventional sounds.
But where is the tight song structure???? Where is the melody???? Where is the hook???? Where is the cool performer that doesnt move around and look like a geeky stock room clerk??? Heck, where is the sexiness?? Where is the performance????? These are the important areas where even the Kanyes and the Gagas rip a feller like this to shreds, much less Prince!! So why compare him? The thing with Prince is that in his prime, he could take the experimental flair (even farther than this dude could) and AT THE SAME TIME incorporate it into music albums aimed squarely at the pop charts. [Edited 5/24/10 13:17pm] Lol funny post. Now that i shot down your ridiculous claims, i must point out that a song doesn't need a hook or a prominent melody to be great. A track could be so musically intelligent that the creative force behind it is enough for the track to be solidified. I'd rather hear a track loaded with improvised instrumental solo's than a "catchy hook" ANY DAY. Having said that, Jamie still has plenty of tracks pampered with hooks and strong melodies. I'm still astonished you put him in the same sentence as those i don't speak of, let alone claim they're bet-....i can't even finish that laughable sentence. Stop lacing your weed with PCP. He is who he is because of artists like Michael; probably because of Michael himself. I haven't seen a white so-called soul singer to come out since the 90s that's not influenced by Michael Jackson. For what its worth, I liked his first CD. This CD is a bit more experimental. That last CD before this one - utter bullshit. He did a straight up 70s soul ripoff that frankly, Raphael Saddiq did BETTER. Now lets take your examples: "The Ring" - I hear about 3 or 4 Sly Stone vocal arrangements in that song. Even the first line sounds like a variation of "If You Want Me To Stay". The song's hook is weak as fuck. "He is just a dreamer; she is just a dream" I'll forget that shit before I'm done typ...wait, what was that hook again? I forgot. "Coma Chamelon" opens up with TTD's "Wishing Well" drums and sounds like he's been listening to Sananda records but didn't quite "get it". Another weak hook. Dude can't seem to write a vocal melody to save his life. That makes your songs forgettable. Now he does do some cool breaks in this song but its not enough. Fact is, this is NOT a CD Prince would have made in the first place. And he is sooo NOT killing R&B in any way. Why? Because this isn't R&B. Its a hybrid of styles but the R&B crowd wouldn't fuck with this. Its not BAD material. I'm not hating. Its just not MEMORABLE.

Plus, you don't seem to of heard all of Jamie's stuff....Super Collider It's just more to his unstoppable versatility which separates him from acts like Raphael who is essentially just a soul/rnb singer. This one caught my ear when it came out: http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related Yeah, the first time I heard that, the straight up STOLEN guitar riff from "Get On The Good Foot" from James Brown made me Stevie already did this and he did it twice as well and many years beforehand, when he was 12.

I didn't miss it - I DISMISSED IT. MJ is the same person just like Prince is the same person, no matter what era of music you enjoy. MJ of later years is an evolution of MJ in the earlier years as is the case with any artist. Its not like he's a different person. You say "just a soul/R&B singer" like its an insult. R&B and soul have a very rich heritage that has influenced most other forms of music in recent history and I guarantee that there'd be no Jamie Lidell without it. Raphael is a producer/songwriter and he's better at his craft than Jamie Lidell is. Just because someone CHOOSES to do work in a certain genre doesn't mean they are incapable of doing otherwise. By your logic, Stevie Wonder is "just a soul/R&B singer" and Jamie is better than him because he he does different genres or mixes different genres. Are you ready to make that claim? [Edited 5/24/10 13:51pm] LOL! Well, if you want to expand and grow into leagues of your own, you must tackle new and multiple things....Jamie's doing it. I separated him from Raphael. Stevie was established well over 30 years ago as a multi genre, multi instrumentalist....that is, obviously, a none comparison. Like that guy MJ said, you study the greats and become greater...Jamie is putting his own thing down on tracks clearly influenced by others (Prince, Stevie, Sly, Hendrix) and also experimenting with new sounds and blending that with existing genres....which, again, separates him from just a soul/rnb singer. This is what Prince did with the Mplsound and he successfully became greater. Jamie is not to be associated with these guys yet for obvious reasons. But, what i'm pointing out is the fact he is showcasing the signs of someone on that unique path that the big ones once travelled down. Am i saying he will have an impact like them? No, times have changed....but, his artistry could grow to similar heights, many years from now if he keeps showing these signs. So please don't try and say i'm insulting soul/rnb! I'm a soul man. Anyway, my tactic worked, you're talking about Jamie :) Keep it up! EDIT: Im talking MJs modern music which was mostly lacking from Dangerous's repetitive, looped sample beats that rely on their chorus and nothing else. EDIT: Im talking MJs modern music which was mostly lacking from Dangerous's repetitive, looped sample beats that rely on their chorus and nothing else. I don't dislike Jamie. If you could see my old posts, I was down with Jamie's earlier material from his first CD. It was that retro-wanna-be CD he did that check him out for me. There you go again with that "just a" like it a bad thing. What you seem to be missing is the fact that a good songwriter has to have GOOD SONGS. Raphael does. From his Tony Toni Toné work through his productions and all the way up to his solo material, he has a strong track record of writing good songs. Jamie doesn't. He's more experimental - YES. He's unique - YES. His SONGS, however, aren't that great. Good songwriting is what makes a song timeless and makes people cover the song years later. There are tons of unique songs that have never been covered or redone and have been all but forgotten because even though they were unique - they weren't that great in the grand scheme. While Jamie has POTENTIAL, right now, he seems to be rambling. Without a strong vocal hook, nobody can remember what the hell you said/sang. Without memorable words, nobody knows what the hell you said. All of those synths and effects can make an artist sound "different" but its still a miss if there isn't a good song underneath. And "your plan" is moot. I don't mind talking about Jamie Lidell. I like him; he just needs work. For what its worth, I like this CD much, much better than his attempt at neo-soul, which SUCKED. Oh, and as for MJ: Earth Song > Jamie's entire catalog.

news to the org. as much as we think or dillude ourselves to think, PRINCE dont give a fuck about the things we want him to do, nor does he have interest in what others do. Its just the way he is, and why would he at this point want to make an album like someone else when his whole career has been about doing things his way only "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F
