Unfortunately there comes a time in most female singers' lives when they can't hit the high notes anymore for various reasons--even the ones who took care of their voices. I notice Barbra Streisand sings in a lower range now--and she was so paranoid of losing her voice she never smoked or drank alcohol. Very few can belt out like they used to in their youths...Aretha is one of the exceptions. I do think Mariah still has a decent voice but she will have to lower her range with good songs and not try to compete with her younger voice. I used to have a decent, not great, voice but I find I can't hit the higher notes like I did a few years ago! That's just a part of life...but when your life depends on it--a totally different game!

^^^ That's what I'm saying. I think it's ridiculous when people say that she can no longer sing. Clearly her voice is no longer the same, she just needs to learn how to work with what she now has. The same can be said for Whitney as well.

Mariah had better material back in the day as opposed to her recent albums. I enjoyed 'Memoirs', but the lyrical content doesn't come close to the lyrics on many of her older albums. Her voice has lost a little bit of it's power, but she's still hitting those high notes on 'Memoirs'. She's still good though. Prince Rogers Nelson

Oh, Whitney. Why anyone with a voice like that would ever inhale anything but air is still beyond my understanding. Prince Rogers Nelson

I don't understand why Whitney's management--especially Clive Davis--didn't tailor make songs for her that would make her more limited vocals shine on this tour, instead of making her cough and hurt her throat by doing the vocal theatrics she once excelled at! That is just bad management, esp. since she still smokes, which is understandable for an ex-addict. Whitney's cousin(?) Dionne Warwick smoked at the end of her career but I remember albums tailor-made for her smokey deep voice that sounded good like "Deja Vue" written by Barry Manilow. I thought it was a great song that made the most of Dionne's changed voice; she used to sing soprano in the early days! The same thing with Whitney--I thought that she sounded great on a song like "Million Dollar Bill" on her new album even when I heard her sing live on TV. Really like that song! Does she sing as she used to? No! Can she still do well-written songs that make the most of her voice and don't demand what she can no longer deliver? Yes! Bad management choices!

I will admit, I have not heard Aretha lately, but when I heard her on the Luther Vanross tribute cd and she won a Grammy or an AMA for it, I about died. I could barely understand her words in that song and she souned like she was screeching. Sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me. Has she done anything recently? I would love to listen and repent my view on her voice as of today. Thanks. [Edited 5/23/10 17:58pm]

I don't mind Aretha's voice transformation.
Behind all the booze, cigarettes and excessive eating, the genuine delivery STILL stops me on my tracks,,,,watch her piano performance of "Amazing Grave" from Martha Stewart's show and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about. With Mariah, I don't MIND her voice at all,,,,,I DO MIND the chickenhead fluff that doesn't add shit to her talent lately, there's a flicker of hope every once in awhile(Subtle Invitation, Its A Wrap, Fly Like A Bird) but mostly, the bitch just loves to downplay her own talent for the sake of pleasing those snot nosed whippasnappas. Mariah's voice has gone down some the past few years, but she can still sing pretty well. What has bummed me out lately is that she has resorted to trying to appeal to teenyboppers on her last two albums and working with the same old tired crappy R&B producers when she should have been singing something more substantive. Despite her drinking and hanging out with rappers in smoke-filled studios, she usually is quite cognizant of her vocal chords and takes care of them. Now if she could only find some material worthy of her voice, I would be quite thrilled.

She needs a total makeover and NO im not talking about her fucking image, im talking about her crap music and albums over the last decade "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

lol I think the complete opposite; she seems far more comfortable with herself now then she was then so I'm more inclined to think early Mariah was fake. And, I loved her first albums when they came out but compared to her current albums they didn't showcase her personality or talent as much.

I remember hearing this song on the radio and the moment I heard it I was hooked on this woman's vocal abilities. I remember her getting dogged for those high notes too.
This has to be my favorite Mariah remix: [Edited 5/24/10 19:44pm] Prince Rogers Nelson
