Sananda Maitreya: is the world missing out on his brilliance?

The new album 'Nigor Mortis' is a masterpiece and proves once again that he is the closet thing to a true musical peer of Prince. One wonders if he could not be like Prince if he stayed in the US and didnt go independent. He was actually there before Prince - of course he didnt have the monsterous contract with a major record comapny like Prince did. After his super nova flash of brilliance in the 80s as Terence Trent Darby, he disappeared to Europe and the US audience never really heard from him again. He was still making music and doing gigs - just not where most of us could see him. You had to get on the net and seek out his new work. He shunned the record industry much the same way that Prince did. But unlike Prince, he just hasnt had the financial and business successes that Prince has had outside the industry. But artistically, he has grown from that confident, slightly arrogant young pop maverick from the hardline in 1987 to a veteran craftsman who seems to do exactly what he wants.

Do yourself a favor and go to his site. He has entire concert videos and all his Sananda music there. We like to speculate about who would be an interesting - and worthy - collaborator with Prince. First in line has to be this man.

there are nuggets of genius in his recent work, but he disappeared up his own ass of self-indulgence and self-importance so long ago it's not even enjoyable to sift for them.

Man oh man. "Young pop maverick"???I swear you just make sht up. What specific track did you hear by Sananda that sounded like the work of a "veteran craftsman"? I like a lot of T's music up through "Wildcard", but after that he sounds terrible. As bad as most new Prince music has been, overall TTD's stuff is even worse. Did you hear "The Ballad of LeBron And Kobe"?

I went to a party at Paisley Park in the early 90s and TTD was there. Prince and the NPG were jamming and TTD got up on the stage with them and ended up walking off with his tail between his legs...

I have heard this story many times by many people. I don't think anyone thinks he can stand next to Prince as a perfomer or player but his 'Symphony or Damn' stand along side Prince's greatest works in terms of imagination. That is an AMAZING album.

WIld Card was incredible too. I have not listened to anything since the unfortunately..Maybe I should..

Yeah same old yadayada..

Actually that's not quite right, he lived in Europe from '83 till '93. Then in '93 he moved to Los Angeles till 2001 then he moved back to Europe. First to Munich in Germany and then to Milan, Italy.

* Neither Fish Nor Flesh, a Soundtrack of Love, Faith, Hope & Destruction
* Symphony or Damn, Exploring the Tension Inside the Sweetness
* Angels and Vampires, Vols. 1 and 2
* The Sphinx

Lord knows I prefer heady to bubblegum, but, damn, this stuff sounds like some Manly P. Hall !#%@@*.

I have all of TTD's stuff. It's pretty much hot garbage since Wildcard, his last album produced on a major label. It makes you seriously question the validity of his "written produced and performed by" claims on his major releases. On top of that he charges more for his stuff than any other act I'm aware of. I think your post is an irresponsible lie. You can't even name one song that backs up anything you wrote in your initial post. Can you name any 3 songs after Wildcard that even partly support that verbal rimjob you wrote? If not why did you post at all?

Hey Funksterr,

FYI:
Wildcard was not produced by a major label but by himself. In fact the major he was with at the time didn't want to release it.
After a lot of hassles with that major he moved to another new one but they wanted him to change stuff which he refused.
Took it back from there and released it on his own label after giving it as FREE download earlier that year.
There was another major who got a license deal from him but since they were selling copies in NON-licensed countries, he took it away from them and re-released it as WILDCARD - The Jokers' Edition.

Charges more than others? Mmm...19 euro for a double cd (Angels & Vampires) or 15 for Nigor Mortis are pretty normal prices if not cheap.

One would be hard-pressed to find a better artist with a wide-ranging songwriting ability than Sananda. Symphony or Damn was one of the best albums to emerge in the 90s. His last two releases were great listening experiences too.

1 Euro = 1.2556 U.S. dollars so yes he is charging more than most other artists here in the United States major or independent. That's unfair.

Wildcard started out as "The Solar Return OF TTD" which was set to be released on a major. My point is maybe he had some professional level input and involvement that resulted in a higher quality product. I'm not so sure he has the discipline or is truly capable of throwing down as a one man band type of artist. I can't understand why the more recent tracks sound like a dude with no direction fooling around with a joint and an 8 track recorder in a basement. In short it sounds like he NEEDS a label and we shouldn't go around bragging up the new stuff when it's been really low quality.

Nah, not around these parts. Terence has gotten plenty of love where its been due. Most music heads already know what's up with Terence. To me his greatest strengths are his voice and songwriting (poetic at times) biggrin His greatest weakness is he knows it neutral

Oh, and Symphony or Damn was brillant! But Vibrator was hot too.

Well overhere in the Netherlands (and more European countries) most cd's are over 15 euro so I consider it cheap.

Sananda intended the last 2 albums to be exactly as they are and sure you might not like it but plenty other people do love the more basic approach.
It's OK you don't! Plenty of music out there you do like biggrin

Did you download the latest 6 songs? Or listened to the previews of it?
Quite different from his last 2 albums.
